We spent two nights recently at the Hotel Bernardi on the advice of Tripadvisor reviewers and found it to be excellent. The management were very helpful and friendly and gave us every assistance. It is located on a quiet street a mere 10 minutes walk from San Marco. We stayed in the annex and had a room with a shared... More

Bernardi Semenzato was a wonderful way to end our two weeks in Italy. A beautiful small hotel tucked back off the main thoroughfare. The directions given by the hotel brought us right to their front door. Originally I had booked the main building as I was traveling with my mother and her bad knee. After having to make last minute... More

Two serious problems: 1. Proprietor insisted on retaining my drivers license for staying in the annex. the license was not returned upon my leaving & paying the bill/returning keys etc. It was also never mailed to me during the rest of my stay in Italy or at home. We found out later that this is illegal. Also unnecessary, since they... More

Our room at the Bernardi was in the annex, as requested based on previous comments, and it was large, clean, and furnished nicely. The bath was large and modern. It was very quiet at night. We did not have breakfast at the hotel because of some reviews we had read, but in retrospect wish that we had. Each morning we... More

We stayed at the Hotel Bernardi during the Carnivale earlier this year (2005) and were suitably impressed, to say the least. We stayed in a spacious, en-suite, annex room (having booked over the phone many months in advance). The room was spacious, clean, bright, and packed a real Venetian punch aesthetically with the ornate mirrors, cupboards, bed, side tables etc.... More

We stayed at this hotel last summer. It's tucked away in an alley, the front desk is horrible, the breakfast bad and the rooms dismal. I liked Venice, but couldn't wait to leave because I was so uncomfortable during this part of our trip. If you go to venice, stay somewhere nicer as this place will make your stay an... More

I've just come back from staying at the Bernardi Semenzato and was delighted with the two days we spent there; it was an ideal stay for wanting to experiance venice and enjoy a relaxing break. To tell the truth we spent little time in the actual hotel as we had a lot of sight-seeing to cram into the one weekend,... More

Enjoyed our stay at Bernardi Semenzato. Our room was spacious, well lit, decent bathroom, great shower pressure and location was very convenient to most sightseeing, especially as there's a vaporetto stop nearby. No problems with the staff whatsoever, did not have breakfast so can not comment. There were a few good cafes and osterias nearby. We would happily come back... More

Stayed one night here Nov 8th....very pleasent hotel, nice breakfast. When we made our reservation we inquired about getting an "annex" room as we read that the annex was newer and a little nicer but they were unable to accomodate however the room we had was very nice. Having stayed in several hotels throughout Italy the room was above average.... More

We just returned from Venice with our 3 children, 9,7, and 4. We stayed at the hotel in 2 connecting rooms for a very good price by Venetian standards (120 euros per night.) The staff was very friendly, helped us to get a babysitter, helped us up the stairs with our luggage, took us to the water taxi, etc.. It's... More

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
