We stayed at the Alcyone hotel in late May. Our room was small but clean. Breakfast was simple consisting of a roll/croissant, cereal, yoghurt, fruit juice and coffee. The breakfast room only has 7 tables and if the hotel is full you may find you have to wait for a seat. As the previous reviewer indicates the location of the...

My wife and I booked into this hotel for a week on a hot Venice Saturday, as part of a package tour. The guy at the desk, Rocco, had a quick conversation, in Italian, with our tour guide, who translated that we had a room at the top of the hotel for one night, but for the rest of the...

Just to say that we have recently returned from a week in Venice staying at the 2* Hotel Alcyone (booked via Hotelconnect) and if you want a budget hotel right in the heart of Venice, this is certainly one to consider. Some of the rooms are exceedingly small but if you choose rooms to the left of the stairs, they...

The Alcyone turned out to be just what we expected. The rooms are on the small side but clean and furnished nicely and the bathroom is fine. Only down side was that our room, like others, looked onto a building undergoing renovation work and was a 4th floor walk up. (But you only have to carry your suitcases up once...

Granted the hotel is a 2 star. Pros: Location Cons: Stairs only an issue if you are on the 4th floor. Extremely small room even by European standards-two people trying to move around was a chore. The bathroom was even smaller-couldn't sit on the loo without hitting your head on the window/wall opposite it. Mold in the corners of the...

The location was great, the staff were friendly and it was clean. Everything we need when the room is just for sleeping in!! The hotel was what we expected for a 2 star in Italy. Yes the room was small and we had to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to it. The room may have been small, but...

I have stayed at this hotel twice now for three reasons: 1. Superb location. Located on a lovely street full of gorgeous shops selling glass, clothes, food, wine etc. 4 minutes walk from the Rialto and only slightly longer to St. Marks Square. Also very near a lovely, reasonably priced restaurant (you'll spot gondoliers there at lunch) called La Campana...

Staying in San Marco

Neighbourhood Profile
San Marco
The most famous sestiere (district) in Venice has one of the world's most famous squares, St. Mark's (Piazza San Marco). Anchored on one end by the basilica, clustered around it are restaurants, museums, shops, orchestras playing in the square, pigeons, the grand pink Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale), the soaring campanile bell tower, an astrological clock tower, plus gorgeous cafes and restaurants like Florian and Quadri. Piazza San Marco is beloved by Venetians themselves. They book a table anytime, which offers a buffer from the fray. This grand outdoor drawing room attracts Venetians for a stroll too, especially late in the afternoon when the hoards of daytrippers thin out. It's simply a grand place to meet.
