This hotel is fantastically convenient from both the waterbus and the railway station - this means that you don't have to carry cumbersome luggage on and off boats. A wide selection of pasticcerie, farmacie and supermarkets as well as lovely cafes and restaurants in this area also within an easy walk. Take advantage of the hotel's shuttle boat to Murano...

I spent two weeks leading a group of fourteen students in Venice. The Hotel Abbazia was perfect. I had some initial doubts because it's so close to the train station, but they were completely unfounded. In contrast to many cities, the area around the Venetian station is quite nice, and since the hotel is around the corner, it still felt...

3 moms booked this hotel because it was close the the train station.... it was so much better than we had hoped for. We had a room with two double beds and a day bed, a large armoire, and a marble tiled bath (very large by European standards). The front staff desk was great - on a rainy day they...

My family of four spent three wonderful days here in late August. All of the descriptions posted were very accurrate. The hotel is literally steps from the main train station. If you are arriving by train (recomended) from Rome or anywhere else the train trip to Venice is really nice and relaxing. The train from Rome was very modern and...

My husband and I spent our first vacation in years in Venice, and stayed at the Abbazia over December (traditionally a quiet season for tourism in Venice). The hotel is in an excellent location, close to the Plaza de la Roma and a vaporetto stop. There are also pleasant shops and restaurants nearby. Although the hotel is not really that...

We stayed at Hotel Abbazia two days before a cruise. This is a great budget hotel! The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They helped us with all our touristy needs, from restaurant recommendations to transportation. The rooms are small, they don't have any amenities, and we only had a shower (no tub), but the room was very clean. The...

Stayed at this hotel at the start of Dec 2006 and was probably one of the best hotels i have stayed in in Italy. Only downside was the church bells ringing at 7am ish in the morning! Breakfast was gorgeous-kept us going for the rest of the day. Staff at the hotel were very friendly and extremely helpful. I hope...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
