My partner and I stayed at the Metropol over a few wet days in November. First the good: the service was polite and unobtrusive and the restaurant earned its Michelin star; the room was charming and the bed comfortable. But now the bad: the room they gave us (an expensive suite) was one floor above the bar, and having returned...

The hotel was on The Grand Canal. Expensive for what you got. Once inside the room, had to walk up stairs to arrive at the bathroom and bed area, making it difficult with the lights and awkward for movement and closet location.

For us this was an expensive hotel, but we were only there for three nights and got a deal on last minute so went for it. So glad we did, from the moment we arrived it lived up to its pretensions of luxury. The staff were courteous and helpful and also friendly but not too much. The location is of...

This hotel has the perfect location. Particularly if you arrive at night. It is right on the front of the lagoon. Only 5 minutes from San Marco Square and other attractions. Because of this it is a very busy part of Venice. The hotel is lovely and the rooms are nicely furnished with really comfortable beds. We didn't go for...

Comfortable world class hotel near San Marco and many other attractions. Yes, that means that many other travelers enjoy the location as well and it can get crowed and tourist traps lurk around every corner, but they can easily be ignored. At check-in, the reception staff informs you about breakfast, pricing and restaurant facilities. If you can eat a big...

This hotel is just 5 minutes away from San Marco square. So far the positive things. Breakfast is pretty expensive (30€ !) but don't be tempted to take the cheaper version for 10€ : one coffee,a glass of juice and one (just one !) very tiny roll. A real rip-off. Beware if they send you on a free boat trip...

We spent three days of our Golden Wedding trip at The Metropole . Situated facing the Lagoon and just a few minutes from St. Mark's Square it is full of beautiful antiques . It is privately owned and the owners have put on display an eclectic collection of items from card cases to corkscrews adding to the feeling of being...

The hotel is right on the lagoon and is a beautiful building with many eclectic collections of things in display cases. Elegantly appointed rooms. However, in early October the air conditioning was turned off for the season. The only way to sleep was to open the windows, which would be fine except for the late night strollers along the lagoon...

We stayed at the Metropole on our third visit to Venice and we were very impressed with the customer service at this hotel. We didn't have much time when we arrived to get to the art galery tour for a reserved attendance and then afterwards a matinee at La Fenice opera. Right away at our check in our room was...

A nice place with lush fin de siecle decoration, where you could meet Oscar Wilde sipping his absinthe - if he was still living. The bathrooms are clean and inviting. The only problem of the place is, that it is close to a busy boat pier, where day tourists debark in the morning. You should avoid the rooms with lagoon...

Staying in Castello

Neighbourhood Profile
Castello
Castello is the largest of the six sestieri (districts), and the only one not facing onto the Grand Canal. More than half of Castello is situated within Arsenale, the naval base, which occupies over one-fifth the area of Venice. This gentrified maritime neighbourhood feels busy but casual. Castello’s side streets are laid back, with small boats lining canals criss-crossed by laundry. Semiannual exhibitions add a strong artsy current to the Arsenale area. Via Garibaldi in Castello, with its shops and bars, has one of Venice's rare straight and wide boulevards. When a large ship turns around the Lido to enter the Giudecca Canal, the startling sight creates an illusion that it will run aground right on Via Garibaldi! Families treasure Giardini near the island's tip, green with rare trees and grass, and Riva degli Schiavoni is a popular spot for Venetians to take a stroll to watch the sunset.
