My third stay at the Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal, and I am always pleased. For this stay, we were upgraded to the hotel's best room on the top floor that had a terrace and beautiful view. The room was slightly larger than the standard rooms, but still "cozy". The interior is tastefully decorated in the Venetian style, creating...

We recently stayed here for two nights. The hotel has a wonderful position on the canal. It is opposite the railway station and gondolas go past all day. Walking distance to shops and restaurants. The atmosphere is splendid. The rooms are a little small but are decorated in the old Venetian style. The hotel oozes atmosphere. Very enjoyable

Stayed at the hotel July 3 and 4 before taking a cruise from Venice port. Very happy we stayed there. The location was great. We arrived from Rome on the train and the station is directly across the Canal. You see the hotel as soon as you get out of the train station. Biggest hurdle was getting our luggage over...

We enjoyed three days in the beautiful city of Venice and stayed at the Hotel Varlton on the Grand Canal. This hotel is in a very good spot as it is right opposite the railway station, which is very handy as we managed to fit in a day trip to Verona. The hotel was air conditioned and spotlessly clean the...

Was a bit worried after seeing some reviews, booked the Carlton for my wifes 60th Birthday, upgraded to Superior room with canal view, very nice room with perfect view and air con room 308, was there during heatwave as anyone can verify who was there from 2nd of August...did not experience any smelly bits, even on the gondola ride around...

The location of this hotel is excellent especially, if like us you are travelling by train. It's across the road from the railway station and is convenient for water buses/taxis. It's also a walkable distance to St Mark's Square. The staff are extremely helpful, courteous and efficient. Rooms are decorated in the Venetian Style with wonderful Murano glass chandeliers. This is...

We stayed here for our 23rd anniversary. The hotel itself is in an excellent position for water taxis, train station and bus station. The room are decorated to a high standard but oh my word they are warm!. Wasn't terribly impressed with the breakfast so skipped it on a couple of occasions. Eating out can be expensive but we found...

I have mixed feelings... Rooms are very small, extremely small. The feel in the hotel is old and muggy. Dirty carpets in the corridors and stairs. Breakfast just ok. Only positive is, you are in Venice instead of Mestre. Be prepared for a lot and I mean a lot of walking, it is an hour walk to St Marks square...

When we arrived at the Carlton Hotel we were told they had no rooms available as they had some plumbing issues. We noted that there were other people being checked into the hotel at the time. We were told that they had organised alternative accommodation, to an equivalent standard, at a nearby hotel. Our luggage, which we had carried over...

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
