This hotel is ideally located directly across from the main railway station. Positioned as it is on the Grand Canal you have convenient access to the water busses that provide a cheap and easy was to visit all parts of this wonderful city. The hotel is immaculately clean with well furnished rooms that reflect the ambience of a bygone era.... More

Gorgeous Venetian style room shame about the view, but when your sleeping or bathing the view is incidental, the views outside are what you come to Venice for. Breakfast was as good or better than similar continental hotels, the coffee was awful but the chocolate was great. altogether a lovely experience. Sadly the rooftop terrace is closed from November. We stayed here for 3 nites following a cruise. Stopped in early in the morning to drop off baggage, convenient, and got into our room early as it was ready about 11AM. Back corner room on 2nd floor, so it was a little bigger, compared to seeing some of the other rooms. Only views are water front, our was alley,... More

Just back from a weekend at this hotel and we enjoyed our stay immensely. Staff were friendly and helpful especially Kimberly on reception and the bar staff. We stayed in a classic room and we were delighted with the venetian decor and beautiful furniture. Room was spotless and although we struggled with the warmth of the room it was not... More

WOW! Our hotel was on the Grand Canal, facing the railway station on the other side (a good landmark if you got lost!) Lovely room with quaint Renaissance vibe and very comfortable bed. Our room only had a view of two alleys (one from each window) but it had a good cross breeze, so we left the windows open. Seating... More

The Hotel Carlton on the Grand Canal is a nice enough hotel I think. Location is good and furnishings clean. We were on the first floor, in a nice sized room, but the problem with being on the first floor was the rooftop of the building in the light shaft was even with our windows. For security we could not... More

The Hotel is right on the Grand Canal on Venice island - anyone visiting this city would be mad to stay on the mainland side of the bridge which is downmarket and a little dingy. The hotel is one of the better ones on the island. Rooms are good and everything you need is there. The Cathedral & square is... More

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
