We stayed for two nights as part of what is meant to be a luxury tour. Maybe the hotel's position on the Grand Canal is it's claim to fame but sure isn't the staff or rooms. Our room, on the first floor, smelt very damp. ( I know we are in Venice but it made you feel ill. Other guests...

We stayed at the Principe on a Gate One tour and were mostly very happy with it. The room was clean and had everything we needed, including a safe. The bath was European, with a tub/shower combination with no shower curtain or glass enclosure. We had a welcome dinner there (fantastic!) and the breakfast is wonderful! Coffee machines gave us...

This hotel was our first stop on our trip through Italy. It was very close to the train station, a good thing, because we took it to Florence. Our room was located on the Grand Canal, so our view was great. At night, that great view proved to be pretty noisy! The room was clean, however, the bed was very...

So to start we asked for a double and specifically asked not to have two single put together, we even have it in writing but still ended up with two singles, their explanation was it's got a king size sheet on it what's your problem. Next was the air conditioning that sounded like a Jack hammer, ok they said they...

We were very disappointed with our stay at the Principe and would not stay there again. Our room was dull looking -( needed a fresh coat of paint), air conditioning did not work, the sink had cracks all through it ( great for the transmission of bacteria ), the wallpaper was peeling off the wall and baseboards broken in areas.The...

Hotel clean room and bathroom clean room small but as you don't spend a lot of time there it was adequate. Air con a bit noisy and wouldn't stay switched off when selected but the nearby circuit breaker board provided a solution. Breakfast good plenty of choice hot or cold. Staff seemed a bit stiff and unapproachable but didn't need...

As a whole, I would recommend this hotel. There are lots of comments about the staff being rude, however, we rarely had to talk to them, except to pick out keys back up. They were happy to help if needed though and witnessed this with other holiday makers. To get to and from the airport was VERY cheap! Around €10-€15...

Great location near to vaporettis, Ferrovia Santa Lucia and right on Gran Canal. However, there are so many people staying there it takes ages to check in, forever to wait for a lift and you have to jostle people waiting for 'groups' to form to get in and out the front door at all times. Breakfast is another hassle with...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
