The building is historic and was once the residence of well-to-do merchants’ families. It was fitted out as a hotel in 1959, by the noble Sereni family, and extends over 4 floors, a typical period feature, facing onto the wonderful canal "dei barcaioli," reserved for gondolas. Thanks to the full-scale restoration in 2002, the Ateneo Hotel has maintained the unspoiled charm of a typical seventeenth-century Venetian residence.

We wanted somewhere near the theatre La Fenice, other than the foyer of the theatre we could not have been closer,no more than 100m. The staff were professional, welcoming and very helpful. The quaint nature of the hotel certainly appealed to my wife and I. You can arrange a water taxi direct from the airport to the hotels water door. 30-40 min. Much easier than wrestling through narrow streets with luggage, and on and off the Vaparetto. All in all a truly wonderful stay.

Hotel facilities and room need updating. Due to the age of the hotel it seems that the room is not that clean and feels like it’s dusty although I see hotel staff cleaning and sanitising the rooms. Receptionist and hotel staff were friendly and helpful.Breakfast is good and has a nice variety to pick from. Location of hotel is superb as it’s just 5 minutes and 8 minutes walk from San Marco and Rialto bridge respectively. The hotel is easy to locate.

Do not make a booking with this hotel under any circumstances. We had a group booking of 5 rooms (which was set to pay onsite as stated when booking) and the hotel cancelled 6 days before arrival. They said it was an issue with my card when I asked to prepay in advance, which was rubbish because I used it to book another hotel straight away. When I contacted them they said I could rebook, but they had put the booking prices up by 1500€ extra! This is criminal and gives booking.com a bad name. It was the hotel that was under hand. Don't get caught!

Stayed at Hotel Ateneo for 3 nights for a family visit to Venice. The welcome was very warm as was all the interaction with the staff throughout the visit. Some great football talk with my young son! - the hotel is classic Venice, the rooms are small as expected and contained essentials only. If you are looking for affordable and a true experience then this works. The room air conditioning worked brilliantly, the bathrooms are very old but did the job! All in all - we loved this quirky place and everything it offered for us

If location is your key decision point then this is the place for you! It's a short walk from St Marco water taxi station and Rialto water taxi station and also the most important tourist attractions of Venice like the Rialto bridge, Doge palace and St Mark's basilica. The rooms are a bit tiny. To be fair Venice is so beautiful and there is so much to enjoy, you won't feel like being in your room. The vibe at night is also worth enjoying, near Rialto bridge or St Mark's square with music and dance

Booked through Expedia, told me that the price was wrong and that they wanted me to cancel. They said that Expedia had asked them to cancel it. Expedia confirmed that they did not and had to issue a voucher.

Disaster is the best word to summarize stay there. I can forgive small rooms (as expected in Venice) and bathroom for people below 160cm (you cannot stay if you are taller). Breakfast is a joke, artificial orange juice, burned croissants and God one knows what made of scrambled eggs. Forget about iron (not allowed), and air-con if temperature outside is below 24degrees, I heard it is too cold to operate... when 22 outside you have 27 in the room, impossible to open window if don’t want to be eaten by mosquitoes. Never again...

What a great place to stay! Very convenient location. Excellent friendly staff. Very clean room with very nice amenities. Tax needs to be paid in cash. Most places prefer if you pay the tax in cash. We had a train to catch and were able to get a water taxi right at the hotel. Excellent place to stay and explore all of Venice.

We traveled with our two kids (2/7). We had a triple including two twin beds and a king. The room is small, and if you are carrying a lot of luggage that won't cut it for you perhaps. Although it is standard in here. We traveled with two big bag packs that fit inside the closet furniture. Didn't have any issues with the bathroom. I read the reviews of the water overflowing so we put towels in the key areas. The water pressure and the hot water work just fine. The wifi good also. They give you A LOT of towels which was great. Towels size were also good size, not the tiny bitty ones. For us the hotel room is to leave our belongings so it is not our priority. All Venice is basically walkable. It was 7 minutes to San Marco Piazza, to Rialto, to each part of the gran canal. My 7 year old walk all that without complaining. Like the patio as you can get a nice coffee to go and drink it there while the kids were playing. Location: All about 10 minutes each way and yes you are going to get lost as is Venice. Google Maps worked must of the time for us ~95% of the time. We took the Alliaguna to the hotel and stop in San Marco. I highly recommend even is more expensive a taxi. The hotel has its own boat pier but they have to open it. It is access via the patio of the hotel. There is another small entrance one next to it but is public. Keep in mind the canals get crowded. In the morning a lot of working, dispatching boats and taxis. Then in the afternoon full of gondolas and taxis. Breakfast: It was for me okay. This is not a JW Marriott. There was coffee, water, tea, orange juice , breads, cereals. For the ones complaining on the Nescafe machine..they do good coffee. It is the same company of Nespresso. The only con I have to mentioned was the attention of one of the guys in the reception (didn't get his name). The first one (younger one) told us a water taxi was going to be 130. We said we were going to think about it. Then the other one in the evening told us that no, it was 140! When I told him that the other guy said it was 130, he said "no no it is 140". That doesn't settle us right at all so every time it was 10 euro more. We have traveled extensively and something really get us is when people try to get the smart coin on us when there is no need to be honest. I asked a Gondola guy and he told me to book the taxi online. We did. The water taxi was waiting for us on time (from the public access there was another boat doing deliveries and he told us that the hotel must open the door so he could park). We ran to the hotel...and here this guy (the 140 euro guy) was giving the round and round. My husband had to press on to the receptionist to open the hotel access as he was all about because we didn't use his "services". He just didn't get the commission he wanted (for greediness!). We were really annoyed by the situation. We found out later that people get commissions on it which is fine as you know the language, do a call hey 10 euro more for that, fine...but 40% over the price tag? It is abuse. He did get the keys and open the pier access for us at the end but we had to basically yell that the water taxi was waiting for us right now!. We left with that bad feeling. Other than that, the hotel itself was fine. To find the hotel get to Al Teatro restaurant/cafe...from that plaza look up on the street names and there is one called Hotel Ateneo in yellow with an arrow pointing where to go.…
