Very old building, marble floors, very picturesque. Our room was on the small side but was perfectly clean and pleasant despite being on the rear of the hotel (no canal view :( ) Very quiet (apart from some very ignorant americans having a loud conversation in the corridor late at night) we slept really well. The location of the hotel...

Stayed 3 nights late September, with a twin room for us and a single for our daughter. Nice, quiet'ish part of Venice, alongside a picturesque canal basin and one of the small bridges. 10-15 minutes' walk from the station and from the bus station, both involving 2 bridges over canals. It's a 30 minute walk to St.Mark's square. Several good...

Nice hotel, at convenient distance from the railway station, in a good location, quiet neighbourhood, extremely kind and professional staff, good rooms. Also: they go the extra mile! Provided gluten free breakfast for me (I emailed them a couple of days prior to arriving) and as I was there during high-water season, they even gave me rubber boots (they keep...

Staff friendly and helpful, check in staff moved us to bigger room when asked. We stayed for 3 nights and as well documented it is located very handily for both train and road transport. We came in via water taxi and were dropped a little way away near to piazzale Roma, this despite us thinking a private transfer would drop...

A Great Hotel in a great location. It is located very close to the bus station making it very easy to find upon arriving. We appreciated the quieter location away from the major tourist points, it meant you saw a part of Venice that perhaps we would otherwise of missed. If you are tired after a long day walking, it's...

The Al Sole was very convenient to the train station with good directions about how to get there on the hotel's website. Our room was very small but the hotel was 'quirky', on a canal and with a lovely courtyard. Breakfast was good and there were plenty of good eating places nearby. Note no free Wifi which seems unusual in...

Great place to stay with a spectacular view from the balcony of room 104 (ours) Funny how a little touch or two can just give that bit extra. Like a free safe, mini bar and bath mat, not that important maybe but great to relax after a hard days trekking around the many sites in a full on cool shower...

We stayed at La Sole for 2 nights after our cruise on the recommendation of trip advisor. It is an old hotel, very quaint, very clean, helpful staff speak English. Breakfast was included and had lots to choose from - eggs, fruit, juices, cereals, coffee, toast, etc. Room was compact but enough room for a 2 night stay. Modern bathroom....

The Al Sole is a 10 minute walk from the main bus station and waterbus stops and 15 mins from the train station. All attractions are easily reached either by transport or walking. Lovely hotel with lots of nooks and crannies and original features. Best was eating breakfast out in the garden every morning. Room was comfortable but not huge...

Staying in Santa Croce

Neighbourhood Profile
Santa Croce
Santa Croce gained importance as a sestiere (district) when Piazzale Roma was created in the 1930s to bring cars and buses close to the center of Venice. Constitution Bridge spans the Grand Canal linking Piazzale Roma to the train station. This area buzzes with energy from travelers and students. Historic palaces and former industrial buildings house some departments of Ca' Foscari and IUAV Architecture universities. On the Fondaco dei Turchi, Venice's Museum of Natural History offers Venetians prehistoric thrills, plus an overview of lagoon fish and wildlife. The Grand Canal, northern boundary of Santa Croce, is lined with palaces and decorated by the tall green dome of San Simeon Piccolo. Ca' Pesaro attracts Venetians to its contemporary art exhibitions. The Grand Canal exposes only one face of these buildings. On the opposite side, the palace often interacts with a square or a busy street to represent its neighbourhood identity.
