Excellent location, friendly staff, reasonable price. Be sure to have google maps ready because this place is easy to miss. Like most places in Venice. Wifi isn't the best but apart from that, everything was good.

The location is ideal. Practically in the center of everything - restaurants, bars, trattorie - close to the central station as well as the main S. Marko square (reachable within a 20 minute walk). The hotel itself is a confy accommodation, all clean and tidy, staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Definitely value for money. Would absolutely come again.

We were on a budget honeymoon trip last autumn and eventually booked a room here at Hotel Marte for an overnight stay. Generally had a good location in Cannaregio, it was about a 10 min straightforward walk from the train station through a busy street and didn't have to cross any bridges (this is a big deal, it's difficult to...

We stayed between 8/9 and 11/9. We had a twin room with a side canal view. There are no lifts and three steep flights of stairs to get to reception, which was fine for us, but not for anyone less than fully mobile. The room was spartan yet clean. Towels were refreshed daily, and the shower was warm and powerful...

My friend and I had booked into an Air BnB down the street which turned out to be AWFUL, so I literally went looking for the closest hotels we could move to that had an available room. The staff at this hotel were so friendly and sympathetic to our plight and had us sorted out in a clean comfortable twin...

The hotel has perfect location: some 7-8 min walk from the Piazza leRoma where buses from Marco Polo airport arrive, and close to the Ghetto Nuovo, i.e. Jewish neighborhood with kosher restaurants, synagogues and lot of history. The room was just what we wanted: no frills, but very clean, with spacey bathroom, extremely comfy bed and truly terrific view from...

I sort of knew when I booked this hotel based on the comments that it was nothing special. And that turned out to be true. It was clean but very old and the bed was terrible, it was well used and I almost had to hold on to it in order not to tilt out. Anyway I did not expect...

We wanted a place within walking distance of the train station and cruise terminal, and chose Hotel Marte. I was concerned about the requirement of climbing stairs to check in--on the third floor, and there is no elevator. A friendly receptionist awaited and it took no time to check in. We ended up being assigned to a room on the...

This is a great little hotel. Yes lot of stairs to reception (leave your bag at bottom as your room is probably accessed via a separate door). If you are frail, Venice is not for you, as you are likely to cross at least 100 bridges in a day all with steps! The hotel stairs were no bother to me...

Staying in Cannaregio

Neighbourhood Profile
Cannaregio
Cannaregio is the second largest sestiere (district) with its busy Santa Lucia train station. Many transplanted Venetians commute from the outlying areas, “terra firma” to the locals, which is shorthand for any place that is not Venice. Two Grand Canal bridges serve Cannaregio, the newest (Constitution, 2008) still a local hotbed of controversy. Ponte degli Scalzi is a busy link to the train station. Nearby shops on the Lista di Spagna offer specialties like pastries and coffee that lure Venetians with a down-to-earth attitude. The Ghetto, where the Jewish population was segregated in Cannaregio, has five historic synagogues with an active Jewish community. The Fondamente Nove bustles with foot traffic to the Rialto and San Marco while vaporettos (water taxis) head to Murano and other islands. Side streets lead into quiet picturesque neighbourhoods and palaces like Ca' d'Oro rise directly out of the water.
