Having booked a room and received confirmation of the booking, I suddenly started receiving panic stricken messages from the manager to say it wasn’t available after all! Then just a few days before my trip I receive another confirmation and that I should contact the manager about arrival times. The manager then finally canceled the booking and refused to find me an alternative solution although he is bound to do so.
Trieste really isn't a fixture on the tourist trail just yet, so with a fairly baffling array of options, Gens Julia turned out to be a great choice. It's located not far from the Piazza Unita, but it might be more straightforward in practice to reach it via Via De Cavana and Via Felice Venezian. Google maps will direct you up the steps via the Basilica San Silvestro, but this is a bit of a maze, and disorientating. Davide and Frederica are great hosts, and Frederica in particular is especially proud and enthusiastic about her home town, so is a rich source of advice. The room was comfortable and a decent size, but the bathroom was adjacent rather than en suite. This seems a common feature in many B+Bs advertised in the city, but it was exclusively for our use, not a shared one. The breakfast was actually one of the better ones we had on this trip, with the typical selection of cold meats, pastries, and fruit, with proper coffee as you would expect in Trieste. The one main criticism is that the rooms all adjoin a common kitchen area and the sound travels easily. So early risers seeking early breakfasts can be clearly heard in the rooms. In addition there are quite a few steps to negotiate to the room, but Davide can help with bags. Moreover, they were very flexible about leaving luggage post checkout so that we could continue exploring before leaving.…
Host/Owner Davide was great, but to me the overall description of this as a true B&B is a stretch. I've stayed in many B&B's (some in Europe, including Italy)… all have offered a common area for guests (living room, parlor, library, etc.) and some sort of outdoor space (garden, patio, yard, etc.) This has neither, because it's really just a small apartment or flat in an apartment building that has been converted into a "B&B." It simply consists of three bedrooms (with their own baths), an office and a very small kitchen area, with a table for four. Our bedroom was a decent size for Italy and was neat and clean. The TV was the size of a computer monitor. The bed was very hard for me and the pillows were like bricks. You can hear other guests and doors opening and closing as clear as a bell as they came in and out, and we lacked the feeling of privacy... we did not get a good night sleep. The kitchen had a small balcony that overlooked rooftops and other apartment windows... nothing to see there. The small kitchen was not air conditioned and we were hot in the morning. Breakfast was a simple continental type; pastries, dry cereal, cold cuts, yogurt, coffee and juices - all squeezed in on the small table along with two other guests. The biggest letdowns were the building entrance -- felt like I was walking into a dungeon, and then the four flights of stairs (about 80 steps) which is rough to climb with luggage, and I'm pretty fit. This apartment may be fine for less discerning travelers, but for us, sorry to say it was a disappointment.…
Gens Julia was our outpost for a weekend getaway in Trieste. Its location and welcoming host was a great choice for us. We're glad we chose this B&B for out getaway. Gens Julia offers comfortable rooms and a great, light breakfast to get you going and out the door in the morning. If you're looking for a more hearty breakfast, you don't need to walk too far to be at the historic square in less than five minutes. If you drive and need a place to park, our host offered garage parking next door for a very reasonable price. Of course, there is free, on-street parking, not far away as well. My wife and I look for value on our trips and Gens Julia was a good deal for us. We will return. But there are a couple things that I see could be downsides for other travelers. First, it's 77 steps up and down to the B&B. If you have trouble with stairs OR carry a lot of luggage, this WILL be a hurdle. Our host helped with the baggage but you've been warned! We've stayed in older places with more stairs. But alas, as we get older, we're going to want to stay in places with fewer stairs. My wife and I are usually up by 8 a.m. most weekends. That is sleeping late. But if you are a sleeper who likes to snooze beyond that time, you may be woken early by breakfast guests. The breakfast rooms are right outside the bedrooms and sound carries. Again, not a problem for us but something you should consider when choosing your weekend accommodations. Gens Julia has a larger apartment for travelers of more than one couple. We will return with a college-aged son and mother. It's a nice place to stay and a great price. Thank you Gens Julia for a great weekend in Trieste!…
The room was very nice and clean. Breakfast was good and the host was very helpfull and friendly! A lot of stairs but that is good for your health! ;-) One suggestions would be to give the possibility to pay with an app on smarthpone or on beforehand.
This B&B is located on the third floor of an "unmarked" apartment building without elevators. It is close to the historic city centre and other tourist sites, but it's in a very busy street, specially being uphill and so motorcycles are accelerating when passing through below the window. The owner is very nice and makes an effort to improve the stay, helping with the luggage up the stairs, moving his car so we could park up front, and trying to solve the issues we had. Breakfast was served in the kitchen, and it was ok. The wi-fi was free, but very slow. They did not accept credit cards, which is always a downside. The room itself was small, with an old TV set, and the shower wasn't fully properly working. One of our filters for booking a room was having an air conditioning, but ours didn't working at all. Because it was over 30ºC we had to keep our windows open to the noisy street, and even so it was very hot inside. Our sleep quality was really bad, which is the main concern when you are at a hotel. Overall I can't recommend this property because our experience was not good. However, I believe it's possible for someone to go there and don't have most of the issues we encountered.…
It really bothered me a lot wether I should give a critic or not, but I guess I'd like to share the experience. We had a room booked for the end of August. We arrived at Triest at about 21.00. Rang the bell as instructed and a man came to show us to our room. Without any further information/explanation he took us to another room-complex nearby. We finally got a room, which had nothing with what we had booked (we were supposed to get a romantic room, with nice furniture, a balcony, etc.). A poor breakfast was in a Café 5-10 minutes by foot, the room was clean yet simple, to get an inetrnet connection we had to go to another building and on top of that, when I asked for an explanation the owner of the room we stayed in told me that I should be grateful that we got one in the same price. All in all it was a pretty dump experience, also considering that this was my birthday gift to my friend.…
We only stayed overnight but thoroughly enjoyed it. The only issue we had was that there is no proper signage to identify the property. The actual address is correct but when we drove down the narrow road we pulled over and walked to the front door but we were expecting a sign showing this was a B&B however having said that Davide appeared, introduced himself and moved his car for us to park. Davide is the perfect host and extremely helpful with directions to restaurants and suggestions on things to do. The 3 floor hike upstairs did not bother us as Davide carried our bags to our room that was very comfortable. All in all a very enjoyable stay. Breakfast was reasonable.
Invisible from the street, this lovely B&B has 3 rooms sharing some common areas. Décor was lovely, classic old building with renovated premises, walking distance from the best of Trieste. Mara's little local restaurant was a highlight - ask David about it! I knew nothing about Trieste, and was just staying overnight - Now I wish I had made this a key part of my holiday!
Everything was perfect: location, rooms, breakfast, hospitality. B&B is situated in old part of the city, in quiet narrow street just 10 minutes walking from the city center. The room was a wonderful surprise with beautiful antique furniture. Breakfast is typically Italian, served in a lovely little kitchen. But the best part of the hotel was our host David and his hospitality. Only complaint: hotel is on the 3rd floor and no lift. Definitely recommend it.
