We recently stayed at Hotel Porta San Mamolo. It was just perfect. The staff was SO friendly and helpful. The space was gorgeous, it felt more like a B&B than a hotel.. but with all the privacy one would get in a hotel. The rooms...More
My partner and I had a spare night in Bologna before my family arrived the following day. We had read lots of wonderful reviews about Porta San Mamolo and when we arrived, we immediately understood why. We had issues with our sat nav charger in...More
A completely delightful hotel just inside the city walls and a ten minute walk from the main square. The room we had overlooking the garden was very comfortable, the staff incredibly welcoming and couldn't be more helpful, the breakfast in the garden room was superb....More
Fantastic hotel! I have now used this hotel for over 10 years and it is a unique hotel. The most freindly staff, nice original Italian style, quiet, relaxed, close to the main plaza.....just exceptional! The only thing on my mind when leaving this hotel is;...More

to reach our Hotel from the Train Station (there is only one main Station Bologna Centrale) it is possible to take a bus (33, 32 or 30 but probably 33 is the easiest one), you can get tickets at the bus tickets office TPER (you find it at the exit on your right side), it will take around 15 minutes to reach Piazza di Porta San Mamolo stop, 2 minutes walking distance from us.
If you don't have heavy luggage it is also possible to walk, crossing the center it takes 35 minutes. By taxi it takes around 10 minutes for 10/12,00 euro.

No, the Porta San Mamolo is not just in the center; it is just at the edge of where the old city wall passed (that's why it is called "Porta" (Gate)). To get to the Piazza Maggiore, you have to walk four long blocks. The area is very nice, however, and there is a good restaurant at the corner called Sangiovese.

We had a hire car to get to the hotel and then walked everywhere. There is a bus map at people.reed.edu/~reyn/BolognaMap.pdf which is a bit complicated but the A bus looks like it goes within a few 100 yards of the hotel.
