No, the Porta San Mamolo is not just in the center; it is just at the edge of where the old city wall passed (that's why it is called "Porta" (Gate)). To get to the Piazza Maggiore, you have to walk four long blocks. The... More

We had a hire car to get to the hotel and then walked everywhere. There is a bus map at people.reed.edu/~reyn/BolognaMap.pdf which is a bit complicated but the A bus looks like it goes within a few 100 yards of the hotel.
