We arrived at the B&B, the entrance looked lovely and was situated on a nice street with bars and restaurants. We had to ask someone where the Matisse was as the building was very confusing. Once we were outside we rang the bell repeatedly and waited for 20 mins without no answer. I then called the mobile number provided and...

I visited Rome with my wife for a long weekend and we stayed in this small b&b. It is conveniently located near the main station and from there you can access all the tourist sites with a reasonably brief walk. The actual b&b is part of a larger building that fits perfectly the old charm of Rome. We had a...

Central place to stay~ close to termini and the republicca metro stop but does have the potential to be difficult to find. The b&b has many different businesses in the same complex so ring the buzzer for Matisse. The room wasn't exactly what we expected ~ although clean and basic and I grew to like it. Communal area very lovely...

The taxi driver was unsure he had brought us to the right place (we were unsure!) but it's because the entrance at night time (we arrived after 10pm) is misleading. But, the our driver rang the hotel and confirmed everything and the owner came down to open the door. From there, apart from the inner city tax charge that we...

Once you finally find Matisse it is a good location. Although it is on main road it is actually only an apartment within a complex and that apartment is then split into different rooms. We got there as other guests were changing their room and we got the room that they obviously rejected. Window wouldn't shut, had a lump of...

We stayed in the Matisse B&B in August (2016) for 5 days. When our transfer dropped us off, it was not clear where the hotel entrance was, however we realised we had to press a small buzzer (among about 8 other buzzers) to gain entrance. After pressing the buzzer and waiting 3 times, we finally had a reply of ‘Yes...

If you can accept the fact that the WC and washing facilities are outside the rooms, and if you don’t object to walking up to the 2nd floor of a complex, this is an absolutely superb place to stay for a fraction of what other centrally located hotels demand. The rooms are spaces and clean, and complementary drinks and snacks...

Staying in Esquilino

Neighbourhood Profile
Esquilino
Old school vibe from the very beginning is the only way to describe the Esquilino neighbourhood. The Esquilino takes pride in being one of the oldest areas in Rome for its key location on one of the city’s famous seven hills. From an ancient neighbourhood to its modern incarnation as a multicultural hub, Esquilino always has something going on—polyglot vendors debate street artists while kids play pick-up basketball games. Look around you: this area isn’t like the historic centre. Liberty architecture, large piazzas, and long boulevards mix with archaic arches, secret side alleys, and beautiful churches like Santa Maria Maggiore.
