I wish to share our disappointing experience at this hotel because I do not feel it deserves the 5 star rating it currently has. I do not expect (or need) the hotel to reply with anything useful so this is just for other travellers who are interested. The points I include are very specific just because they may prove interesting to some people hesitating where to book. We stayed here for 2 nights in the Royal Comfort Suite in August 2021 and despite paying several thousand Euros for a few nights because we wanted to ensure a wonderful experience we encountered many issues: 1) Check-in: we had called two days prior to check whether we could get an early check-in seeing as we were travelling with our 7 month old baby who would need a place to nap. The lady on the phone assured us that this could be arranged and that they were not fully booked. We even specified that we could pay for a different smaller room for the morning if needed. Upon arrival on the set day the staff told us they were fully booked and no rooms were available before 15h (the actual check in time). After insisting, we were offered the option of accessing one of two other suites which were vacant before ours but both would have meant a downgrade and we had already paid for the more expensive suite with better views. Offering a downgrade after full payment has been made at the desk is not acceptable. After explaining that we had specifically called to check this prior to arrival the (we presume) hotel manager just repeated that check in is at 15h and that nothing was available saying that it had been a misunderstanding. No proper apology or compensation was offered. We ended up waiting all morning and early afternoon in the hotel lobby. Had they simply been honest from the beginning saying early check-in was not possible we would have come later. 2) Lack of service: There was nobody manning the main bar while we waited. Since we had to wait for over 3 hours for a room and were not offered even water we wanted to order drinks. We had to go to the reception to ask them to call someone. Their reply was “he is at the pool bar”. This is not a reply you expect at a 5 star hotel. There should be staff at the main bar at all times. The fact that they are not organised or are understaffed is not the guest's problem. 3) Breakfast: The breakfast buffet is not self-service. This is presumably due to Covid restrictions which is understandable but it was extremely poorly organised. There was only one person per section (fruits, cheeses, breads and hams on one table and croissants and cakes on another) to serve the entire breakfast hall meaning long queues to get ones food (and ultimately creating even more crowded areas). We sat in the part of the breakfast area which was furthest indoors to not bother other guests as we had the baby with us. Although tables were set and waiters were passing nobody came to serve us. When we finally asked a passing waiter if we could order coffee he acted as if we were bothering him. 4) Room: The suite itself is nice and clean but it is small. There is no proper separation of the “living room” area with the sleeping area as is commonly done in suites. It was just a room with an extra sofa and coffee table (and two huge flat screen TVs which has zero added value in a single space...). This is indeed shown on pictures on the website but it seems even smaller in real life (same with the other suites we were shown). Two standard size rooms would have been better (and cheaper) than one suite in the end. Another point for families with young children is that there are only electric blinds which come down or sheer curtains. Nothing in-between. So if your child needs darkness to sleep you will need to press the blinds down meaning you cannot access the balcony after they are sleeping. Thick curtains would have been better. Then the air-conditioning is either very cold or does not cool down at all when above 23 degrees. When you have kids this is a problem. Lastly the jacuzzi on the balcony was nice but there was some kind of residue at the bottom so I personally did not use it. 5) Staff: A lot of the staff was unhelpful or rude (except the ladies at reception and cleaning ladies who were lovely). Waiters in particular act like you bother them as mentioned above (we spoke Italian to them so I presume it is even worse for non Italians). 6) Dining: During our lunch at the smaller restaurant on the lower level just above the pier our order was supposed to come with grilled vegetables. There were none on any of the plates and when we asked the waiter he simply stated “oh yes there are no more vegetables left today”. This should have been specified prior to us ordering. They seemed to hope we would not notice and offered nothing in return. Again, unacceptable behaviour. We have travelled extensively staying at nice hotels all over the world and although star rating obviously differs from country to country, we do not feel that we had a 5 star experience here. The issues mentioned above may seem petty and there are obviously much worse things that can happen. However, when you book one of the most expensive suites in an expensive hotel which markets itself as 5 star you expect a certain level of detail and luxury. It is mainly the attitude and lack of thoughtfulness that bothered us. We were not even offered one free drink while waiting 3 hours for a room that had been promised to us (a gesture that even a lower grade hotel would normally think of doing). Sorrento is known to be a coveted and expensive destination and as a result many hotels operate in a very “nonchalant” way as they know they can afford to do so. I know the hotel managers reply in such a cold and uninterested way because they do not have competition thanks to the location and therefore do not have to care about complaints. I am writing this so that others know that it might be worth checking their options more carefully. It is a shame because the setting and views are indeed gorgeous but the service and amenities of the hotel are lacking. I feel it is worth mentioning these points for anyone hesitating between locations. And if you have to book here, get a standard room do not pay for a suite. The quality/price ratio is ultimately not worth it. We would not return.

Let me introduce myself, my name is Antonio Delfino and I am the Room Division Manager. I have been addressed your feddback and I personally met you upon check-in. First of all allow me to offer my sincere apologies for obvious dissatisfaction and give me the opportunity to restore your confidence in our hotel. 1) Check-in: the hotel check-in time is guaranteed from 3 pm as specified in your confirmation, so if any early check-in is confirmed it will always required a supplement overall during the busiest days of the year, our “FERRAGOSTO”. This matter has now been discussed with the front desk team who is always aware of the hotel situation and occupancy of that period. 2) Lack of service: the inconveniences occured are extremely unusual but represent the difficulties of the period (post COVID, peak of the season). Of course there can be no excuses for the level of service experienced. The Head of Departments are now fully aware of the results. 3) Breakfast: The Breakfast set has been organized to face and offer the best solution to our Guests with current restrictions, indeed both options are offered (A la Carte and assisted buffet). We are aware of difficulties and we are working to solve the incoveniences which may occure. 4) Room: I’m sorry to hear just know that you were not satisfied with the Suite category choosen. Anyway you had been suggested by e-mail to choose a different one for your family of four. I personally showed you when we met different Suites of different sizes available and ready for you. Ofcourse being a different category and rate we would have found an agreement. 5) Staff: I will share your nice words with the reception staff and housekeeping and same will be for the restaurant staff to avoid the same situation occurring again also for the lunch experience mentioned in point 6. Altough I realize the overwhelming impression to be gained from such incidents is far from favorable, I can assure you that such occurrences are extremely unusual and represent a considerable deviation from our normally excell level of services. We are true supporters of a tireless attention to details and attitude that always places guests first and understand that it takes a team of committed staff to provide the service that meets and exceeds guest’s expectations. Please allow me to say it is not worth to violate the name and the centenary story of Sorrento hoteliers and the whole touristy industry for a short two days stay. We really enjoyed our 1 week stay at the Royal. The location with access to the sea and close to the city and the sea view from the bed room was overwhelming. We also very much liked the interior of the dinner and breakfast rooms and special thanks to Concetta at the reception desk who organized all dinner bookings and tours for us! The whole place has a very historic and nice atmosphere. We just thought that the terrace close to the beach / sea looked quite abandoned. If we are back in Sorrento we will again choose the Royal!

This place is just stunning! The rooms are huge, very clean, the staff is great the food was great. I have not one complaint. We ran into some technical issues with our air and tv and within minutes someone was there to fix the issue. Great service all around. The hotel grounds are breath taking. You feel like you went back in time. The front desk staff had so much patience with all our questions, thanks for everything! They do covid testing on the premises which made it very easy to head back to the US!

Sorrento is very busy but the Grand Hotel Royal felt like an oasis of calm. The grounds are stunning and expansive. With multiple outdoor terraces, comfortable lounge furniture, a beautiful pool and private “beach deck” directly above the bay. My room was beautiful and pristine. I had a Seaview Deluxe with small balcony. The seaview rooms are definitely worth the price. The decor was very colorful and I loved the Etro bath amenities. The hotel is a 12-minute walk to the central Sorrento thoroughfare (Via San Cesareo) with all the shops and restaurants. The front desk reception was very helpful. (please note you must have a current negative Covid test result. They will arrange a complimentary rapid test on property) upon checkin. (This is info is as of 6 August). Masks are required in all indoor s areas and many with hand sanitizer stations throughout the hotel
