This hotel is located right in the thick of it. The room is spacious, inside of a cave just as the original inhabitants of this area. The bed was incredible and the staff super friendly attentive. Thank you for a great stay.
Luckily, we had read the reviews before arriving by car ,because navigating from the outskirts to the hotel would be challenging for anyone not familiar with the city of Matera. And in any case, there is no parking close to the hotel- in fact you have to walk the last 50 metres or so from the drop-off point to reception. We followed instructions from the hotel staff, leaving the car on on-street free parking, and calling the hotel for a pickup which took five minutes or so. Matera is just an amazing city, totally different from most of the historical centres of typical Italian hilltop towns. The way the old city has grown means that you get around by climbing LOTS of narrow steps. The hotel room was part-cave, carved into the rock, and part more conventional block construction. The room was very spacious, All very comfortable, no damp smell, excellent quiet air conditioning. Good, but not excellent, wifi. Breakfast is in the reception area, also excellent. But the setting is just spectacular! Many good restaurants nearby, and prices are typical, with no apparent mark-up for being in such a unique location. Be prepared for lots of tourists around, very crowded streets. While we were there filming was underway for the new 2020 James Bond movie, which caused some disruption with street closures. Very highly recommended, both the city and the hotel for 2 to 3 nights stay. After the 3rd night you might begin to get a bit weary of the crowds!…
Rooms are in old sassi houses perfectly located on the side of the side of the old sassi neighborhood. Room set-up is very fine and neat for a 3 star hotel. Room aircon woks well and their is a dehumidifier which woks well too. I am mentioning it because it is true troglodyte habitations tend to be more humid that normal ones, but this is very well managed. As this part of the city is closed to traffic you need to park outside then they come to get you with an electric car. Our arrival at the end of the day was magic with nice explanations in ItalianoEnglish from our driver which was very nice. Despite being pretty nice location is very central and practical to visit the city. Explanations on what to visit and where to go are good. We really like the experience.…
The room we had in this hotel was partially carved out of the stone, making for a unique room. The room was up to date and clean and bright. We did have difficulty locating the hotel, as it is not located on any real streets - a few strategically placed signs might be a help. Also, because of the unique nature of the hotel, there is no real lobby or central meeting place. However, this doesn't subtract from the fact that the rooms are really nice, the staff is friendly and helpful, and the breakfast was pretty good.…
Its difficult to summarise this hotel but I’d give it one if the best hotel location and decor ever. Set in restored Matera caves off the tourist busy piazzas it’s a stunner. We could only stay one night but plan on a return. Excellent email directions and free shuttle to our parked car with Phillipo . The views and walls through this amazing historical hillside are wonderful. The interior is very modern and well planned. The uplighting adding to the atmosphere. Good wifi with a router in the room. Well stocked bar fridge and tea and coffee Thanks Basiliani can’t wait to stay longer. Lots of good eateries a pleasant walk from the hotel. We found Soul restaurant and loved it.…
