Aque Cave is the perfect home base from which to explore Matera’s historic center. Siblings Paola and Francisco spent years restoring this property to its current wonderful condition and their efforts resonate in both clear and subtle ways. Rooms feature stylish yet uncluttered decor with comfortable furnishings, including a very nice bed. We stayed in the Suite (really, a series of connected caves), which was incredibly spacious, including the largest tub we’ve ever used. The air conditioning was effective, though the rooms probably would naturally remain cool even on warm days. WiFi worked problem free. And the breakfast buffets were, hands-down, the best we had during our journey across Italy, with homemade and locally sourced meats, cheeses, breads, desserts and other items. But Paola and Francesco are the reason for this being an exceptionally wonderful experience. They effortlessly and genuinely make you feel welcome from the moment you check in, providing a history of the town, calling out points of interest and making (delicious!) personalized recommendations on places to eat and relax. Paola even walked us to the abandoned part of town so we could explore the ruins, going far beyond any call of duty. By checkout it felt we were leaving behind a longtime friend.

After the initial fun of finding this little piece of heaven I don't really know how best to fully describe this other than outstanding. The rooms are both individual spacious and inviting. The bed was so comfortable too. Everything felt like you were indulging in luxury. Paola & her brother make you feel you are not a guest but a new found friend where nothing is too much trouble for them. If there are awards for the perfect hosts, this young couple deserve to be recognised. The breakfast is substantial with a huge variety to suit all needs & tastes and fully sets you up for the day. The view from the patio area is spectacular. You are near enough to so many restaurants too & Paola is so kind in nature & enthusiastic in describing places to visit for site-seeing & eating that it becomes infectious in listen to her recount the history of both the hotel & area in general.. This is the perfect place to stay for so many reasons and the perfect base to visit this remarkable location. A absolute joy from arrival to departure, to Debbie & I, it felt like we said goodbye as friends rather than as guests which is perhaps the biggest compliment I can give this perfect location. GO, SEE, ENJOY!

We stayed only for one night but Paola and her brother made our stay more than perfect!! They took a lot of time explaining us their city and what we can do etc. Paola even gave us tips for our next destinations on our trip though Italy! The room was well designed and perfectly comfortable, parking nearby was easy and the location of the hotel is perfect to explore Matera! Highly recommend to everybody!!

We had a wonderful stay here. Located right at the start of the sassi historical centre, we were able to leave our car in a parking lot nearby. The room was a wonderful mix of the authentic traditional style and modern design. The hosts were very helpful with maps, guides and all the information we needed to make sure we didn't miss out anything during our stay in Matera. The breakfast was delicious and plentiful and the rooms were very clean and pleasant. The perfect place to stay.
