The location, setting, and design of Aquatio are truly breathtaking. The spa is also very unique. The staff, however, is neither particularly friendly or very well trained compared to other locations in Matera or Puglia (including much less expensive hotels).
My husband, adult daughter and I stayed here for 2 enjoyable nights. Great location! The staff were all friendly, and appreciative of my husband’s efforts at Italian. The hotel is amazing! The rooms are unique, albeit not as functional as they could be. At least one more hook for towels in the bathroom, and some other minor things but I can see where they would detract from the cave setting. Breakfast was good and staff friendly, especially the young man with moustache and small beard. A great stay!…
Selected this hotel as I felt it was the best option for prospective cave dwellers heading to Matera . It was fabulous.. We arrived several hours later than planned because of BA Pilot strike we had sufficient time that evening and the following morning to tour Matera enjoying being part of a James Bond film set . Hotel staff very friendly and helpful.…
I am sorry to have to give this place a low rating but I depend on Tripadvisor ratings and reviews and there were a lot of small things that didn’t add up to 5 stars so I don’t want other travellers to be disappointed. The location is fantastic and I can see that they are really trying hard to be a 5 star hotel. The thing is they’re maybe trying too hard. The rooms are indeed in a cave and spotless but very clinical, fine if that’s your thing. However they forgot hooks for robes, and bathroom doors! The restaurant is characterless and the chairs uncomfortable. The food was very strange (ricotta wrapped in coffee) and not very tasty. The service in the restaurant was so stiff and throughout our stay we found the staff to be very aloof. Again maybe they think that’s what a 5 star hotel is about... it’s not! We look for friendly service not snobbery. The spa is really lovely and much needed after a long hot hike. However, the rule about 1 spa entry per stay was really disappointing as we were there 2 nights and felt we should have had another hour in the spa the 2nd day. For the price I wouldn’t recommend staying here until the staff chill out a bit and management iron out the little things. If you’ve already booked to go here, do go, but consider sextantio for a more authentic experience. We just went there for a snoop and a drink and the welcome we got was impressive. We won’t be back to Matera but we will be depending on fellow Tripadvisors so please be honest with your reviews!!!! …
Thank you Giuseppe for the wonderful service and helpful information during our stay . The staff were all friendly and through .The hotel was fantastic and the attention to detail was so impressive! Modern cave and luxurious. The spa should not be missed .
