Reasonably price for a hotel close to all the shops. The room was adequate and clean. The bed was ok without being fantastic and the bathroom standard. Service was good without being heartwarming!

Do not ruin your trip to the beautiful and interesting town of Cartagena by staying at the Hotel Peninsular at C/ Cuatro Santos 3. Basically, in the early afternoon, I checked in. Despite the dilapidated décor and unfriendly staff I got a good-sized room with a modern bathroom. Then I settled down for a siesta. But I found it impossible to rest because the chico next door was continually singing (the same song), while his TV blasted out, in what could only be described as a deranged, almost religious, frenzy. Now that’s travellers’ luck. But it was the jefa’s response which appalled me. On my way out later in the afternoon I asked for another room and, once she had finished munching her crisps and turned down her own TV, she told me there were no others (and I doubt that was true since I was not aware of any other guests during my admittedly brief stay). She took no further interest in my problem and made no attempt to investigate. When I returned later that night, the night-shift lackey had been instructed to get my home address, no doubt fearing that I was trouble and could trash the room (possibly because they knew the chico could well drive guests to distraction). I went up to my room, where, you guessed, the frenzied chico was still singing the same song over the sound of his TV. He stopped at about 2.30am, maybe not particularly late by Spanish standards, but it was not a pleasant night until he did – after which, incidentally, I got what sleep I could as the ancient bedsprings clawed at my kidneys. It’s basically a hostal – and €37 is steep for a hostal. Try the two-star Cartagenera on C/ Jara, which is the same price. Or, for a relatively modest boost to €55, you can stay at the totally comfortable Los Habaneros.
