We had one of our reservations moved to the lovely Hostal Matheu and were pleasantly suprised by the central location near Sol and the charm. It gives fantastic first impressions, great decor and clean rooms. Would recommend others stay in this lovely, quiet hostal.

We have never stayed in a hostel before, we found this was fine for 3 night. The rooms and bathroom were clean. We did have breakfast in our stay which was in a different place to where we were staying. Breakfast was poor, not much of choice. We could have toast or a crossant. We would not recommend this for...

This hostel is in the best location, so close to the Sol station (like footsteps away) and surrounded by gorgeous tapas bars! Also an easy walk away from all the main places to see such as the prado, palace and Plaza Mayor. At the bottom of the road near to Sol there is such a great burger place called Bacoa,...

Minutes away from Puerta del Sol this accommodation is perfect for a short visit to Madrid. Was allowed to check in 2 hours early and only on 1st floor (no lift). Room was as expected, clean, tidy and secure. Lively area of Madrid so expect some noise.

A 5 minutes walk from Puerta del Sol square in the heart of historical Madrid. An easy access from the airport and from railway station by local train to the underground station Sol. An easy walking access to most of Madrid's landmarks, such as Prado museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Reina Sofia Museum, Botanical Garden, Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, etc. Nice and...

We only stayed one night, but wished it had been more. Price was very reasonable, hostel is in a great location and seems to have been recently renovated. It was clean and fresh, more than happy to recommend it.

Stayed here for 4 nights in early March. We absolutely loved it, and would definitely return. Whole place is really nicely decorated, from the reception which is small but very welcoming, to the photos on the walls in the corridors, to the rooms themselves which have a few final touches that give them much more character than you'd expect from...

It is so noisy, the cleaning lady starts about 5 in the morning. The rooms are about 10 m2. But clean though. I read it should be family run but it lacks every kind of personality. It looks more like a russian run investment. There was no warm water as it had broken down the night before. This place is...

We spent 3 nights in Hostal Matheu and what we can say it's that it was fantastic. Very clean rooms, great staff and perfect location. A few steps from Puerta del Sol, you have many bars and restaurants where to spend a delicious typical culinary experience! I would definitely recommend this property!

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
