We have been in Madrid, Spain many times and stayed in many hotels and "hostals" of different categories. This year we stayed in Petit Palace Arenal and the experience was great. When we checked in, the person at the reception counter was Julita who was attentive, courteous and professional. But all the personnel was also excellent. The hotel location is...

The breakfast was good, fresh & tasty, the staff was helpful & smiling, & my little brother was happy with the welcome gift (sweets & lollypop). This is my first visit to Madrid, & surely i will stay at this hotel again, very very...

Excellent location. Decent hotel for the price. Location near the Mercado San Miguel and Plaza del Sol. Walking distance to Gran Via and Chocolateria San Miguel. Staff are very friendly. The area is a bit noisy until around 6am since it is near Plaza del Sol. The noise did not bother me but it bothers some people.

The location of the hotel/hostel is very central. This has many advantages, but light sleepers will hear noise during the weekends from visitors of disco Club Joy located across the street. However Puerte del Sol, Opera and Plaza Mayor are very close by. Room was clean, tidy and new had furniture. The breakfast is excellent. Reception is helpful, but some...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
