Great hotel. Good value. Small, like most European hotels, but not too cramped. Great location near Gran Via (the main business/shopping street). Walking distance to most of the sites in Madrid. Receptionist speaks decent English, though not terribly friendly. Nice, but expensive restaurant. Recommended sites to see in/near Madrid: Prado Museum, Toledo (take the train and tour yourself), Escorial (the...

After some of the other hotels we stayed in during our nine city tour of Spain, I was initially disappointed with the small, dark, spartan room. The location on Abada Street (which means rhinoceros in Spanish!) is just off the Gran Via and Carmen St. It is a short walk to the major plazas, restaurants and stores. We did not...

We stayed in the Hotel II Castillas for 5 nights in early May. It is located on a small side street near the Gran Via. Only a short walk to a metro, Plaza Del Carmen and Pureta Del Sol. There is shopping and restaurants in every direction. The rooms are small but very clean and well kept. The bathroom has...

We were wary when this hotel dropped from No 1 on TA to somewhere in the 60's. No need for concern. Our twin room was immaculate and a reasonable size with street view (Rm 403) - the doubles looked smaller/darker. Large bathroom, powerful shower and a bath, hairdryer. Air con and comfy enough beds. The breakfast was fab - hams,...

Absolutely satisfied with the hotel. Since we had arrived in Madrid at 8:00am (and hadn't gotten any sleep on the plane), we were anticipating a long wait to check in. Instead we were assigned a room by 9:30 am and were able to rest before adventuring into Madrid. The room was large and clean with a great marble bathroom. Had...

We stayed at the Hotel II Castillas and were pleased with our room. The hotel is located on a small street near the Gran Via. The room was very clean with all of the necessary amenities. Internet usage is free if the traveler has his/her own laptop and network cable. The breakfast buffet is fine. There is no on-site parking,...

My husband and I have both traveled through Europe before, so when we checked into Dos Castillas for a few nights' stay in Madrid, we were expecting a tiny room with minimal amenities and lots of street noise. Boy, were we amazed and incredibly pleased! PROS: First, the location is fabulous. We were about 2-3 "blocks" away from Puerta del...

This hotel is located off Gran Via, a busy street with numerous shops and from where you can pick up one of the open top buses to explore Madrid. The hotel room where we stayed was comfortable and spotless and I liked the novelty of the his and her washbasins. However there was one very silly design feature to the...

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
