I've stayed at the big five stars in town, and here's the deal: They are far from the action. The Inturn Palacio is not terribly updated; the carpets are clean, but anachronistic, while the wood floors are quaint, but unpolished. It just longs for a fresh overhaul. However, I can tell you that when I go back to Madrid in...

Excellent location, quiet but very near lots of restaurants. The room was a double junior suite . It was a very large room, with a separate sitting are and balcony. We were on the 5th floor-The balcony faced towards the back and was a fairly high concrete wall. Would have beeen nice to have some furniture outside. I would say service...

This is a great hotel in a great location with a wonderful staff. The rooms were not large but were adequate. The breakfast was good and the breakfast room had wonderful views of the city rooftops. Much of what we wanted to see was in walking distance and it was easy to catch transportation to take you to the museume...

Hotel with character. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who spoke brilliant English - they even held rooms for us until the evening in case we returned from the airport due to volcanic ash flight cancellation. Location could not be better, within easy walking distance of all the Old Madrid attractions and loads of restaurants, yet away from...

We stayed at the Intur Palacio San Martin recently and enjoyed our stay very much. It was located in the center of Sol, within walking distance to the Plaza Major, Palacio Real, Retiro Park and the Prado. Our room was on the inside "courtyard" view, and was not stuffy at all with the A/C on. It was a very quiet...

Good news: the location is excellent, the best you can get, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the views from the restsurant on the 6th floor are superb. See if you can get a room looking out onto the Plaza San Martin. The bad news: the attitude of some of the staff leave a lot to be desired, the...

We stayed in mid March 2010. This was a great location right in between the Callao and Sol metro stations. Plenty of restaurants in the area. The Cortes Ingles major department store was one street over. The staff was friendly, the rooms were a good size, we asked for an inside room and heard absolutely no street noise at all....

We stayed at the Intur Palacio San Martin in early March for five nights. Upon arrival we discovered our room looked inwards to what had been a courtyard but was now glassed in - both at roof level and above the lobby/bar level. As the hotel was very warm and we had no fresh air on opening the windows we...

This hotel was a perfect location for exploring all the tourist sites in Madrid. Located on a very quiet square in Madrid, just south of the Gran Via. Our room was very large by European standards and the bathroom was very nice and clean. I would definitely recommend this hotel. We booked through epoquehotels.com and got a great rate. Our...

We stayed here for 4 nights and enjoyed. Our room was silent, clean and well equiped. The only thing I disliked was that the internet access was only really available on wifi if you sat down in thier little cafe area in the lobby. Not great for planning the next days activities. It is close to plenty of things, including...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Centro
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
