The Carlos V certainly is in a great location, within a very short walk to a ton of shopping (to include the huge Corte Ingles right around the corner) and other main avenues; also very quick access to the Metro. Room was of typical Eurpoean size (ie. fairly small), but exactly what we were looking for as a place to...

We spent 4 nights at the Carlos V during our recent summer trip to Madrid. Our room at this hotel was perfectly adequate and the breakfast, though at little expensive at 11 euros, was tasty. The main issue was the air conditioner in our room. It put out just a trickle of cool air and only worked away while were...

I stayed here last January for 3 nights. Location of the hotel is great. In a small street next to a big shopping street and close to the subway. Room was quite small but very comfortable. Small but good bathroom and with a french balcony. I only paid like €55 a night which I believe is very cheap for what...

We just returned from our 5 weeks holiday, which included 3 days in Madrid, and we stayed at Best Western Hotel Carlos V, - which I thought was perfectly located (although there are a lot a hotels which seem to be located within walking distance to a lot of the central part of Madrid. We had a triple room which...

I go to Madrid very often and it is the first time I have been in this hotel. The hotel is quite basic but clean and, if you like the city center, in a perfect location. The room is not big but for 3 or 4 nights is more than enough. I paid 77 Euros and I am totally sure...

We stayed in the Carlos V for a long weekend after reading the reviews on this website, and we would agree with all the positive comments made about the hotel. We stayed in room 216, which was a large room which had obviously been recently renovated - laminate floors, tasteful decor and a pristine bathroom. Staff were very friendly, from...

Recently stayed for 5 nights with 2 friends for my husband's 60th. We had stayed before a few years ago so knew the location was great, walking distance to most things we wanted to see and taxis nearby when legs gave out. However it was important to us that we had a king size bed and that Casa Patas (a...

I stayed one all-too-short night at this hotel in March 2007. I will definitely stay there again on my next trip to Madrid. The hotel is fantastically situated just a 3-minute walk from Sol on a largely pedestrian side street right in the thick of things. Bargain pricing makes this an outstanding value. I booked a room directly through Best...

We stayed for 3 nights Wed-Fri. The location is ideal to see all the major tourist attractions,Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, shops, etc. If you look at a map everything appears further away than it is, but the attractions are within 5 mins walk. The hotel is very good, the lounge/bar/breakfast area is excellent. Our room was clean and big enough, the...

We stayed in this hotel on the weekend of 17 March for 3 nights and the location was just ideal. We used the metro from the airport and it took around 50 minutes all for the measly price of 1 euro each!!! We asked for a room at the back of the hotel to be away from the noise of...

Staying in Centro

Neighbourhood Profile
Expansive plazas, local and foreign crowds, street performers, colorful lights, window shopping, restaurant signs promising the best paella, ham, and churros con chocolate- this is downtown Madrid, a collection of plazas interconnected by a network of side streets. Some of these side streets are wide pedestrian shopping routes, and some are hidden, so it's possible to duck in and out of the bustle as desired. The iconic Puerta del Sol is the giant crossroads of the city and a must-see attraction at any time of the day. The nearby Plaza Mayor, completely enclosed by historic red buildings, is an ideal place to grab a bite to eat outside, amidst scores of tables and people out for a stroll. Plaza Isabel II (also known as “Opera”) is smaller and a good meeting spot, and the stately Plaza del Oriente is the front yard of the Royal Palace. Centro can be touristy (pickpockets are unfortuately not unheard-of here), crowded, and sometimes gimmicky, but it is also the place to experience classic Madrid.
