lucky enough to get away this year and opted to stay at the calleta as weve done most of the hotels in gibralter but really dissapointed with it the staff were fantastic and nothing was a problem but the hotel looks and feels tired and in need of a refurb we come to gib often but will do other hotels untill the refurb
The hotel is in a good spot. The beach is very close and the view is very good. The staff was excellent. A renovation should be seriously considered by the management. The room was old fashioned and in need of a lot replacements. The tv was small. Great effort anyway.
Very welcoming upon arrival. The rooms are very tired, damp patches, below eye level cleaning not great, window inside / out dirty too, the rooms also have a damp stale smoke smell - I’m not sure if you can smoke in the room. I moved to a second room on the first night which was slightly better, I purchased air freshener and two infusers which greatly improved things. Both rooms needed the fridges cleaning too. The sea view was amazing though, the balcony has only room for one person so small. Bathroom has a good selection of shampoo / shower gels. Again these rooms are tired a little dirty with mould spots on the walls. TV in the room has a large selection of UK channel Sky movies / Sports / ITV etc although there is plenty to do around Gibraltar so not 100% important. The restaurant is fantastic!! Great service, amazing food, and the staff brilliant 5 Star! The bar is good too, great bar man and not over priced for a hotel either. Swimming pool area clean but again tired. The health spa I never used as there is little info regarding it, not even a QR code to read the treatments available. The beach next to Hotel is excellent with one particular bar / restaurant which is perfect for a drink and snack in the sun. This hotel is rated as 4 stars, even during this time of Covid I have stayed at various hotels 4 / 5 Stars and this is sadly more 2 / 3 stars - not worth around a thousand pounds for 7 nights compared the Gibraltar 5 star. …
We have just arrived back in Mainland UK after 3 nights, 4 days at The Caleta. We were upgraded on arrival to a seaview suite which was a fantastic start. Fridge in the suite was well stocked with soft drinks which again was a nice unexpected touch. Our first night we struggled to sleep, we both found the air conditioning sucked all moisture out of the air and we were both left incredibly dry so meant we switched the unit off and opened the door instead, great until 5/6am when the Gulls woke. No massive issue in the grand scheme of things. We'd paid for 2x English breakfasts for the duration of our stay. When we arrived for breakfast we had quite a wait to be seated and for our food to arrive, we felt we'd probably just missed the rush and we were in no hurry so didn't really matter although when the food did arrive we were presented with Continental breakfasts not the full English, again no hardship but we didn't use the hotel for breakfast again despite having already paid. There is a bus stop right outside of the hotel which is incredibly handy and the buses are very simple to figure out. Would recommend a hoppa ticket at £2.50 which allows you to use whichever bus you choose for the full day. FYI if you did choose a taxi at all, to/from Ocean Village is £10, same for the airport. Second night we went to bed with the aircon off and the door open from the off however a new noise disturbed us our last 2 nights and that was the drains gurgling, we assume this is to do with the tides. Nothing I don't suspect can be done about it but a noise we weren't used to none the less. Our bathroom door was incredibly squeaky, a bit of oil on that definitely wouldn't go amiss. The room was cleaned every single day which is fantastic especially given current circumstances. On that subject the hygiene was top notch throughout and mask wearing was at what I feel at an appropriate level, hand sanitize stations all over too. We had a lovely break, wouldn't necessarily rush back but that is no reflection on the hotel itself of Gibraltar for that matter, just feel 4 days was long enough to have throughly explored.…
After reviewing TripAdvisor our expectations were correctly set for this hotel. The service and staff were excellent and nothing was too much trouble....best example I can give is when I went to the bar and ordered a specific drink, the bartender told me it wasn't cold so he told me to leave it with them and they'll bring it out. Sat by the pool the waitress brought me a cold one after which he made phone call to source. Now that's service! We asked for a high room which was given and we had a large queen bed with sea view, small balcony and large ensuite. The room size was very generous with high end toiletries (some I've never seen in 5*...i.e. shaving kit and a toothbrush). Room had ample storage, safe, dressing table and complimentary mini bar. Although not replenished it was a very nice touch. Breakfast was interesting, cold as standard comprised of croissant, bread roll, cake and 2 toast. Coupled with tomatoes, selection of cold meats, cheese and fruit bowls with yoghurt. You can have cooked but I believe this was extra. Now as much as I loved this hotel and enjoyed my stay it's important to be honest. Whilst the hotel is immaculately clean it is very outdated. Half the hotel has been destroyed ready for the new hotel to be built hence the title of the review. The outside bar is closed and the steps down to the beach were locked unless you asked for a janitor to open it and even they lock it after. It's on a side of the island that has the beautiful beaches but requires bus or taxi to get to the shops and restaurants on the other side. The plans for hotel look amazing, however it's a long way off and in my opinion a bit sad. It will be very modern and contemporary when finished and I think we are losing our history as there is a real style about an art deco design and to be fair most hotels are starting to look the same. The Rock hotel has pulled it off maintaining that golden vintage style but just brand new....I wish they would do it here. Still it was a pleasure to stay and be transported back in time to a hotel that would not look out of place in Agatha Christie picture. I hope you enjoy as much as we did. …
