The original building has been tastefully refurbished whilst retaining much of the original architecture within both the hotel and the rooms. We stayed there on 2 separate occasions during our trip and on both occasions the rooms were of a very high standard. Buffet breakfast is served in the morning with a wide range of items to choose from.
The owners are very attentive to your needs, very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our luggage was lost by our airline and was due to be delivered to the hotel just after we checked out to go on a 4 day cycling trip. The owners said not to worry, they would receive our luggage, put it away somewhere safe and it would be there for us when we returned.
Girona itself is a very popular cycling destination and if you are thinking of bringing a bike or renting one not to worry, the Historic has a safe place where you can store them when you are not out cycling.
Also if you're fan of Game of Thrones the hotel is a stones throw away from many of the major filming locations.
We stayed in 8 different hotels on this trip through Spain and the Historic was our favorite, we would definitely visit again.
Room was nicely decorated, hotel is in historic building which really impresses you.
Location is perfect, just 3 minutes walk from the main cathedral.
This is family owned small hotel, nice people, always ready to give a recommendation about sightseeings or food.
Breakfast was fabulous.
Only disadvantage is the address, which is not correctly marked in GOOGLE map, this should be fixed by owners.
Just a little note, its not even disadvantage - when I asked for a warm blanket they gave us without covering /duvet, it was stained & definitely worn by previous gust (there was lots of stains on it).
Rest was very nice & generally memorable trip.
On arrival, we were let in the front door and walked to the front desk. There was a man and a woman, I believe to be the owners, and they didn’t even look up when we came in. They were silent as they checked us in and asked us to pay immediately. We needed WiFi to sort out our Monzo account, but they refused to let us use the WiFi in reception? We paid with a different card and they showed us to the lift to room 208, reminding us not to use the WiFi until we were in the room.
The room itself was spacious, the bed was big and comfortable, the balcony was small but looked over the front of the hotel where it was quiet. The bathroom was nice and had a modern shower. The room was cleaned daily which was great. I loved the decor in the room, keeping traditional aspects such as the stone walls and light shades but with modern twists to it.
Unfortunately, the couple didn’t really acknowledge our presence the whole time we were there, and whilst we didn’t talk to them a huge amount, when we did it seemed a little rushed and I never felt very welcome. There were never any suggestions or recommendations, or even a smile as we walked in and out. We asked for an umbrella once and this was refused immediately.
We can’t comment on breakfast as we didn’t eat here - we decided to try out the many fab places to eat in Girona instead. We were going to have breakfast on the day of our flight home however breakfast is 8:30-10:30am which seems late for hotel breakfasts, and meant we couldn’t fit it in before our taxi at 9am.
The location was perfect and very central to a lot of places, but up a lot of steps / hills so you would need to stay elsewhere if you had any mobility issues.
Overall, the stay was comfortable and clean but the staff were not as friendly or welcoming as I’m used to in a 4 star hotel. I would rate this 3 stars, as nothing major stood out to me.
However… this is not a four star hotel. There wasn’t even water left in the rooms for guests, which is a basic especially in this heat! We were waved in the direction of a vending machine by the lift for water, Coke or beer- not impressed. The room only had a shower attachment over a small bath, no stand up shower. Plastic glasses in the bathroom. The fridge was old and stained. The bed was rickety and squeaky. The electronic door keys only work intermittently. There was nobody there on morning checkout so we made our own arrangements for transport.
A few thoughtful attentions to detail would make all the difference to this hotel. It’s good to support a family business but at this price, staff could be hired to man the reception more frequently and more welcoming details could be invested in at little cost. Just because you are in prime position in a tourist area, doesn’t mean you should shirk the detail.
