I wouldn’t agree with many of the negative reviews here compared to our experience. Friendly staff on arrival and made changes to one of our rooms without fuss or charge. Rooms were a good size, air con actually chilled the rooms rapidly (novelty in many hotels in southern Spain in summer) and staff in the terrace bar later were really friendly.

The only let-down was the attitude of the breakfast staff; a full 30mins before end of service and there was almost no hot food. We were told that it would be replenished in 5mins. Nothing happened, no apology and service was tidied away with an indifferent attitude. Shame given that everyone else was so helpful and friendly and would have scored higher.

The hotel is located in walking distance from the city center in a monumental building built in 1941. The rooms are pretty basic. The beds are hard, but not too hard. The street in front of the hotel is very loud. The hotel is clean. By far the best is the breakfast.

We stayed at the 4 star Ultonia. Hotel is very centrally located and the room was very pleasant. We travel in Italy and Spain for 2 months a year but we have never seen such a narrow garage (I also drive vans for work etc.) Parking with a Mercedes E220 station wagon was a lot of work and I would never use the garage again .

Absolutely disgusted with the customer service from reception staff - not sure if it’s because we we’re British, but they were definitely trying to scam us over room grades so beware.
Arrived to check in for a two night stay. Had booked a superior with Terrace as we had a baby so we paid extra to have a terrace area we could relax on when baby went to bed at 7pm.
At check in we were given room 303. Went to room and it was clearly a double (in fact exactly same room as displayed on their website under ‘double Ultonia’.)
Receptionist said the room they had allocated was a superior with terrace. I queried that it didn’t have a terrace (just a small Juliette balcony which couldn’t even fit a chair on) and she said the Juliette balcony was classed as a Terrace. Impossible. I showed the receptionist photos on their website which proved that the room we were in was classed as a double. The receptionist went behind the reception area to speak to her manager (I can only assume) and then came back to me and shrugged her shoulders and said ‘i don’t have a superior terrace available, I can cancel your reservation if you like.’
I asked to speak to the manager and she went back behind the desk, spoke to the manager, returned looking incredibly sheepish, and said the only thing they could do was to move us to a superior terrace for the second night. This immediately made it obvious I was being lied to, as previously I had been told I was staying in a superior terrace. (Obviously not true and I can’t believe she had the audacity to try and tell me the double was a terrace when I had the photos right in front of her on my phone).
I explained I wish they had just been honest with me that they had messed up our booking, and we’d accept the double for the first night on the basis we would get the superior terrace for the second night.
So, we went up to our double room to get changed and while we were in there I checked on Expedia to see if I could book a superior with terrace as I knew I was being lied to, and low and behold they had availability for that night and the next. I then went to reception and said I’d like to take up their offer to cancel the booking, and I will rebook a superior terrace via Expedia (I originally booked directly via their website to save them the commission fee) for our two night stay, including that night. In a panic, the receptionist got very flustered and miraculously had a superior terrace suite ready on the spot and available for our whole stay.
So, after a four hour battle which ate into our day and stopped us from enjoying our break we did get the room we had paid for. The superior terrace has a very large terrace on the 7th floor, so absolutely don’t let these people rip you off. They obviously keep the more expensive terrace suites for late bookings to get more money. Seems like a well oiled machine in scamming people on room grades (and even heard others complaining to reception while we were there) so I would recommend avoiding this place at all costs.

The Good: Great breakfast. Nice position in town.
The Bad: Room 510 (been mentioned in other reviews) noisy - we asked for a quiet room, it is near the lifts and the roof terrace stays open until 1am when noisy guests descend and it is dingy with very little natural light. All this for 130 euros per night.
The Ugly: After the first night we complained about the room, got a perfunctory grunt and told we could pay an extra 20 euros for a room they couldn't show us or tell us where it was!
Do NOT accept room 510!

Excellent hotel, good amenities and close to the old town. Breakfast well organised, but wish these four-star places would serve better coffee.. the machines they use just don’t work well enough. Our bathroom was excellent with just about the best designed shower we’ve seen for a long time (sounds strange but is true!!)

We went to this hotel because we thought it was elegant. Nothing more wrong. After check-in we asked for a room change and nothing improved in the new one, to the point that we went to a nearby hotel and left the Ultonia the next day. This hotel cannot have 3 stars, it barely seems like one. The only person who cared and tried to correct the experience was Ama Bah, at the Front Desk, she was really attentive.

Lovely hotel in a great location, 5 mins walk from Eiffel bridge, place de la Independecia and Rambla de la libertat. Breakfast was good quality with a large range of choices, hot & cold. Room was clean & comfortable. Would definitely recommend & return.

Booked this hotel as a New Years eve special. Our 1st New Year together.
Hotel location within Girona good.
BUT
Rude receptionist greeting. Would only speak Spanish to my Catalan speaking partner, we are in Catalonia!
Expecting a room with a view of the old town of Girona and what do we get a room on 2nd floor looking into a dismal courtyard with building work taking place in corner.
Requested move and told not possible.
We are sure this was not what we booked as there are 2 hotels within the grouping!!!
Had decided to take the "special" New Years Eve dinner.
Expected good fine dining, got nothing better than my own capabilities even allowing for numbers of 200 possibly.
Cava was awful, food was minimal in portion size.
No non alcoholic cocktails or beer available.
Nothing short of a miserable New Years Eve.
Will not be back.

I stay here 1 night only. I was pleased with the room, comfortable bed, clean, good bathroom light and shower. The best of the hotel is the Terrace where you can just relax for tapas or drinks while having a lovely views. Last, but not least, Location is Great!!! Highly recommended. I would come back next time in Gerona.

Hi there, Lucky you! El Cellar de Can Roca has been on my list for many years! Enjoy! I spend a lot of time in Girona; the Costa Brava and Girona is one of the top destinations for my luxury gastro bike tours. There aren't many great hotels on that side of town I am afraid - perhaps the best I'd recommend would be Hotel Llegendes de Girona Catedral; as the name suggests its right beside the cathedral, in the old, scenic, and mostly pedestrian part of town. It will take around 15 minutes to walk between the two. While the distance is not great, I would recommend taking taxi simply because the area around the restaurant is not particularly scenic. Girona is a gastro mecca; you'll be very pleasantly surprised by the variety on offer. Excellent, inexpensive wines from the Emporda also. Be sure to check out my Girona recommendations on TripAdvisor and give me a few helpful votes if they are of interest to you. Many thanks and enjoy your stay. Padraic.
