Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A fantastic little boutique hotel at the heart of Bilbao's old town. People complaining about how it lacks a restaurant/bar/gym/etc. strike me as absolutely brainless as this is not the purpose or style of this Pension at all. If you want fancy facilities and 24h service there are plenty of large soulless hotels in the area; now if you want a stylish, functional, private, cosy, elegant, comfortable and unique environment, this is the place for you. The room ("Lola") looked brand new and fully equipped with A/C, a Smart TV, safe, fridge, coffee machine, USB ports, and a really nice bathroom. Excellent soundproofing as well, which is important in such a vibrant area such as the old town. The price of the stay was also very reasonable. Overall I feel like I couldn't have chosen a better option in Bilbao, even the little private balcony was so pleasant and charming. So much better than a I-could-be-anywhere chain hotel. I would definitely return.

The real jewel of this hotel is the location. It is right in the 'old town' and an easy walk to everything such as the newer big name shops, loads of restaurants, the Guggenheim, also if you came in on Euskotren, the Casco Viejo stop is about a 3 minute walk away. The hotel is clearly quite new and packed with modern gizmo's, some of which work better than others! the place was spotless and beautiful. This is a 'pension' you sleep and go. There is no lounge or bar areas, no restaurant and the reception is only manned part time. As long as this works for you, everything will be great! You get a code which opens the exterior door, allows you to use the lift and enter your room. The room we stayed in 'Patty' was quite small but they managed to pack everything in. We were travelling by train over Europe so had quite a lot of baggage, which is a challenge in a small room but we could get the bags under the beds and move around fine. The beds are firm, not my favourite but that's a personal thing. Our room looked out onto the street with a tiny balcony and well insulated glass doors. The street was noisy but when the doors were closed, we couldn't hear a thing. We found the hotel to be absolutely quiet. The staff were lovely and so helpful, we could leave our luggage in the room after check out and collected it later. The room has a nespresso kind of machine (only 2 pods and they had filters which I couldn't find), a fridge, safe and the bathroom was lovely, great shower and loved the lighting in the room. PLUS, a big blackout curtain behind the muslin one - wonderful. This would be a five star review except for some items which I felt were 'form over function' to the guests detriment. Examples, the light by the beds was too high up to reach from bed so you had to get out of bed to turn it on or off. The bathroom had a big, stylish sink unit which left no space for anything else and we kept falling over the bin which had to be in front of the toilet. It would also impede access to the shower if you were a larger person. The room overall, was small. It was hard to get to the desk with coffee equipment, fridge, safe or to use it for anything and to access the hanging rails and shelves. But the big one, was the AC unit which emitted a really annoying grinding noise intermittently. Even when I turned it off for a while, about every 90 seconds. It woke me frequently and was incredibly annoying to me. I could also hear this noise faintly coming from the next door room. I would definitely stay here again, probably book a bigger room, on the whole we loved our stay here and wholeheartedly recommend it

If there is anything I hate most is when someone laughs in your face because one does an honest mistake. I Wrongly booked a room in Sept instead of August for one night. We got there after reception hour (20:00). We called on the phone and she laughed in the background mocking our stupidity as she was hanging up. When we left the empty reception, I had forgotten my purse on the counter inside the reception area and had to call back as the door had locked behind us. She said she refused to open before the next morning and how stupid can anyone be to enter without a reservation. She said to come back in the morning all while cussing saying “I can’t believe this, how stupid how stupid”. I was livid, stearing at my purse through the glass from the street. After a while she said she would try to see through the camera and give me the code to open the door. She knew exactly that it could be done. Unhelpful person to the max. Mad just thinking about that there are people like that working in hospitality business.!!!

The property is convenient and within walking distance to everything in Bilbao. Property is very clean, we stayed in the Patty room and loved the decor, bathroom, loved the lighted mirror and magnifying mirror within the mirror, lots of shelves to store items and had nice small balcony to step out and see higher view of the neighborhood. Only negative is there isn’t someone at the property 24/7 and the smell from the cleaning supplies was very strong in the room, had to keep the balcony door open for fresh air.

I wish I could have given this pension five stars. It’s clearly brand new as I’m writing the very first review. The room (Margarita) was very nice and tastefully decorated. It was facing the backyard so there was no noise from the street whatsoever. Unfortunately the elevator and hallway provided more noise which is why I’m only giving it 4 stars. The elevator squealed like a dog in pain every time it was in use, and there were no carpets or sound absorbing material in the hallway so every time people came or left it was very noisy, especially when we were woken up early in the morning by two guests arguing loudly in the hallway. So if Pension Ama can fix that noise problem it will definitely earn a 5th star from me.
