Please ignore the photos and current rating on Tripadvisor, this hotel has been completely refurbished and looks fantastic. Look at their website and the photos there are completely representative. Boutique vibes, 70s retro interior, two brilliant bars, including one on the roof with brilliant views across Bilbao. On top of this the staff couldn’t be nicer and went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable. Highly, highly recommended.

Hotel is in an excellent location and is walking distance from the spots you need to check out while in Bilbao; Guggenheim Museum, Old Town, etc. In addition, there are pintxio spots right around the corner and get a taste of Basque food, but if you want a lot more choices, go over to the Old Town. I can't say enough of this place, it's right in the middle of everywhere. Love to be back here in the future...

We stayed at this hotel twice within a week, taking an overnight to San Sebastian and then checking back in again. We're Bonvoy Titanium members, and on our first 3 night stay we used our "Suite Nights Rewards" to upgrade to a marvelous suite with a ton of room, which was incredible comfortable. We stayed at 5 different Bonvoy properties on this trip to Spain, and this one by far gave us the best acknowledgement of our status with several nice little perks. Our second stay the room was ordinary, but still comfortable. The hotel has a really excellent breakfast. The breakfast staff is excellent and works very hard even though they can be a little overly solicitous (but perhaps this is how they are trained in Spain because this was true also at the other Bonvoy properties and as Americans we're a little more used to serving ourselves). Such a great selection of breads, and many meats, cheeses, cereals, pastries, fruits, fruit juices (delicious banana smoothie). The hotel is in a great location. We walked very easily from the bus station and then walked all over the city from the hotel. Everything of interest is within walking distance (well, it is to us because we like to walk). Some reviews complain that this isn't in the Casco Viejo. Bilbao is a big city, so you can't be close to everything. We liked being able to walk to the bus and train stations and the Guggenheim, and the Casco Viejo is certainly walkable in 20 minutes. We had the concierge make a couple of dinner reservations for us because we were unable to make them online since our U.S. phone numbers kept getting rejected. I don't know what happened, but one of them when we arrived at the restaurant they didn't have our names (given the total lack of caring or regret on the part of the restaurant I think it's them to blame and not the hotel), but this worked out just fine with us because we ended up just eating at Bar Americano and we had an excellent meal. The bartender there makes the very best Negroni!! We enjoyed the rooftop terrace one evening and fortunately the weather was bad and therefore it wasn't too crowded (the front desk will make a reservation for you if you're a guest), but we didn't not return because everyone up there is smoking. I know it's outdoors, but when every single table but you is full of smokers you absolutely do smell the stench and it ruins everything. We didn't even stay for dessert because the cigarettes were unbearable (it took me back to those terrible days of travel in Europe in the 1980s). Everything very clean and comfortable.

I really enjoyed our stay. Great location - we walked to everywhere that we wanted to go. The room was spacious - we had a king bed and a connecting living room. Good wifi, nice bathroom. The staff was friendly, the hotel was very nice. I would be happy to stay here again.

We were so glad that we chose the Ercilla Hotel for our stay in Bilbao. Central location with secure underground parking at €20, the best reception staff, lovely rooms & amazing roof terrace bar. We didn’t spend long enough & would definitely return. Nice acknowledgment of our Platinum Elite status.

We were declined a suite night award for our two night stay, but nevertheless received a lovely room, which was certainly bigger than many of the room that we have received when suite night awards have been used. The ambience was understated luxury. The shower area was enormous. The hotel has its own car park but due to the size of our vehicle we used the much larger car park below Indautxu Plaza, which was only one street away. The décor of the hotel is lovely and the staff friendly. We were particular impressed by the dining staff who worked hard to ensure that the ample buffet remained well stocked and there was effective measures to limit the spread of COVID-19. We visited the rooftop bar for a pleasant cocktail although the music was playing too loudly for our liking, but it is worth experiencing for the views. We had complained to Marriott about the Eugenia de Montijo, another Autograph collection hotel and Marriott mistakenly referred our complaint to the Hotel Ercilla, where we had been more than satisfied with the cleanliness. The General Manager from the Hotel Ercilla took the trouble to telephone and apologised for our complaint although he was baffled about how such a breakdown in their cleaning procedures could happen, which was not surprising given the standard of cleanliness there. However, this further impressed us that complaints were taken seriously.

Great location, easy access in the heart of the city, parking available at 20€ per day. Very friendly staff quick check in, amazing welcome water offered with lemon. Room was clean not very spacious but adequate, little amenities though. Excellent bar-cafe in the roof, opens after 14.00, offers great view in the city. Breakfast was great. Pity about the timeless parking access, since there is no automatic door, you have to ring every time you come and go to open it manually.

I love Marriott Autograph Collection hotels. Generally, you are guaranteed a clean, nice room in a stylish boutique hotel setting. Hotel Ercilla lived up to my expectations. The rooms and lobby appear to have recently been renovated into a modern Art Deco style. The room was spacious, especially for European standards, and the staff was very nice. The hotel has a restaurant off the lobby that was very popular in the evenings, and it also has a rooftop terrace that serves drinks and offers a good view of the city. The location was convenient for the Guggenheim and old town, without being too crowded or too loud. There is also a parking garage on site which was convenient. I would definitely recommend this hotel in Bilbao.

We booked two rooms for 8 nights stay at the beginning of August. On the second day, in the morning we saw a large cockroach on the floor in one of the rooms. Rather shocking for a 4* hotel in Europe! This was immediately reported to the reception staff [incl the video taken] who didn't seem to be too apologetic, they did offer to change the rooms but stated, I quote, that they can not guarantee that the new rooms would be roach free... As a result we had to move out and find another hotel which meant wasting half a day of holidays, incurring taxi costs to reallocate with luggage, higher accommodation costs because of last minute booking and a spoilt mood... (it was on the day of my husband's birthday! ) What was hotel's reactions - none, they just didn't care, charged us for two nights stay [which any decent hotel will waive or at least reduce], didn't apologise and that's it. May be Ercilla once was a good hotel but those days are gone . There are several other better hotels in the city. Avoid!!!
