In the heart of Bilbao, this elegant traditional-looking hotel boasts a five-star rating. It is a bespoke built hotel and has some fantastic lounge areas, restaurants and private conference facilities. It has everything going for it, but fails drastically. Its five stars are a gimmick to elude the discerning traveller into thinking it is in league with the Ritz, Le Maurice, The Dorchester et al. We stayed during the Easter break as we had to meet some clients. When they arrived, we sat in one of the very lovely lounge areas and asked a reception member (as there were no other staff) if we could arrange some coffee etc. We were told they did not serve anything in the lounges, and if we wanted, there was a conference room upstairs from where we could phone room service. This is a hotel with no lounge service, no bar and very limited room service. Room service is a QR code to an online PDF which goes offline at 10 o'clock. You don't have to offer these services, but you can't call yourself a five-star hotel unless you do. The hotel offers a three-star service (at most), with the attitude of the staff lacking in most areas. I would give it a miss or try another five star; there are some in San Sebastian.

Hotel's Favourite
Basque-English architect Manuel Maria Smith Ibarra brought the Carlton Hotel to the world's attention in 1926. Not only does the building impress from the outside with its triangular arrangement with chamfered corners, but it is the splendor of the interior and the 6 floors that makes an overwhelming impression. The rooms are luxurious and stylishly furnished, but it was the size of the king-size bed that caused us a lot of inconvenience due to our age. This issue was resolved thanks to the personal help and efforts of the duty manager, Mr. Pablo Arana, resulting in a move to a twin bedded room. This convenience made the rest of our stay very comfortable. A buffet breakfast is offered every morning at the hotel, which can also be used by outsiders at an additional cost. Hotel Carlton Bilbao is centrally located on Moyua Plaza, right next to a bus and metro stop. The Mercado de la Ribera farmers' market is just a mile away, the famous Guggenheim Museum and other places of interest are a 5 to 10-minute walk from the hotel. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for the customer. It is recommended to visit the El Globo bar, 3 minutes walk from the hotel, where you can find an excellent choice of pintxos.

This is a very traditional, up market hotel but lacked something we find hard to describe. Certainly it totally lacked a friendly smiling face on check in at reception! Probably this is best summed up that we felt we were in a library not a welcoming hotel! However, the rooms are wonderful and the breakfast was as good as it comes! Would we stay here again? Probably, yes!

An elegant grande dame located on the central square across from a beautiful garden. We stayed for one night in mid April in a Superiorto kick off a visit to the Basque Country. Our room on the fifth floor (512) was delightfully large with a nice balcony overlooking the square. In April the 187€ was a steal for this quality and especially given the inclusion of breakfast (23€/pp value AND two free passes to Guggenheim museum-20€ value). Like most historical properties it would be a nice upgrade to have better access to power outlets, but other than that I thought the marble bathroom was a good size and we had more than enough room in which to spread out. The hotel itself is beautiful with rich red carpets on a sweeping grand staircase and an amazing stained glass domed courtyard just off the lobby. The Belle Époque stained glass and other touches add a refined elegance to your stay. The breakfast buffet was included in our room rate and was absolutely outstanding with so many classic basque foods plus anything else you could possibly want from fresh fruit and juice, many pastries and breads and omelette s cooked to order. An amazing feast and not to be missed. Highly recommended

This hotel was excellent. It's beautiful and elegantly decorated and furnished. Right in the middle of town and a short walk to everything. The staff were very courteous and polite throughout. Highly recommended and we definitely stay here again.

Very grand hotel in the Centre. Lots of shopping and eating places nearby. Staff are a bit old school and perhaps could speed up the check in process. Underground parking is available and very helpful staff directing to the entrance. As this is Covid times, not much was open in the hotel. Rooms a bit small too.

Excellent parking with direct hotel access. Staff very friendly and helpful, especially Endika who helped print all the documentation for returning to the UK. Bar service was a little slow. Room excellent, luxury and spacious bathroom. Would stay again en route through Bilbao.

Excellent location, the best is comfy and the room is spacious. The staff was smiling and seemed happy to have us as guests. There is no mini-bar to speak of, and if you are English, only 4 channels with English on the tv. Those things may not mean much to the average guest, but sometimes a 5-star location will have more amenities. BUT, we thought it was great. The bar served us some really good cocktails and we felt the price was worth the location.

Quite a few basic 5-star amenities and qualifiers are missing. 1. There is no concierge to help with luggage 2. The mini bar is not stocked 3. A king-size bed is just two smaller beds shifted together 4. I am not sure how much of the other missing qualifiers are genuinely due to COVID precautions, but it seems like COVID is just used as an excuse for not providing some other basic 5-star services 5. The hotel and its amenities need a refresh, it looks and feels like the owners are just banking on the name to keep their 5 stars. Much of the furniture is old and looks quite used Essentially, the biggest issue is that the expectation of a 5-star service is not met. If the hotel advertised itself as a 3-star one then it would have met expectations.

We have been traveling through Spain and the hotel in Bilbao was a disappointment. The service is not that of a five star hotel. We arrived and there was no one that could help us with our suitcases. The hotel does not have Parking. Only one person in the reception are that clearly was overwhelmed. Other hotels that I have been staying have good COVID 19 protocols while giving a great service. This hotel uses the COVID 19 emergency to give poor service.
