Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My daughter and I loved our stay at the hotel Gran Bilbao! When we first arrived, we were greeted with complimentary fresh juice and a gorgeous, colourful lobby, filled with awesome Insta-worthy props. Our room was huge and very clean, with amazing views over the surrounding area and mountains. Staff were very knowledgeable of the area and very helpful with directions and travel suggestions during our stay. Breakfast was small but varied and we had more than enough choice for our 3-day visit. The hotel itself is about a 15min walk to the Metro (which is up and down a bit of a hill), but only a few mins to the tram. Easy access to town and nicely set on the edge of the main part of the city centre. Great stay, would defo recommend and return!

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at the hotel for one night in August. We stayed with 2 adults and 2 children and our dog before taking the ferry home. The room was a great size much bigger than expected. Hotel is a 10 min walk to the old town and we also walked to the Guggenheim. The beds are very comfortable and we all slept well. We would stay again.

Great stay here. Comfortable room with blackout curtains, smart TV and a large bathroom. Hotel is a good base 15-20 mins walk from town on the river. We didn't have food at the hotel but there is a cafe, restaurant, small bar and a few vending machines. No black tea in the room was the only let down.

Great hotel with a very helpful bilingual staff at the front desk and the dining room. Food was good and the dining staff liked to engage with the customers. One of our party fell ill and the staff made sure she went to a nearby clinic. All was well. Bus stop in front to visit the old city.

We stayed at this hotel twice – once at the beginning of our road trip, and another at the end of it, before we flew home from Bilbao. We chose this hotel specifically because it has a private parking on site (EUR16 per night!), and the price of the room is reasonable for Bilbao’s standard. More useful information about how to access its parking should be made available for guests, as we, and other guests were stuck at the parking barrier when we first wanted to check-in. If you come with a car and intend to use their parking – you must first park your car at the kerb side, send someone to go into the reception to check-in and give them your number plate. They will then note down your car number plate, and give you a parking ticket. Only then can your car go through the number plate recognition camera at the barrier. So, in reality, you do not really need to use the parking ticket. OK – now, about the room. We had booked a Double Room for both stays. On our first stay, the room was quite small, and nothing to shout about. Capsule-coffee machine with complimentary tea/coffee were provided for. Luxurious toiletries in the room, but the hairdryer was dreadful. It switched off on its own every 20 seconds! On our second stay, we were given a much spacious room (thanks so much, Fabiana!!). The decor of the hotel is generally very modern and vibrant. Don’t be disappointed with the basement entrance from the carpark (which feels like a red-light brothel!) Staff was generally efficient and professional, but the BEST thing about this hotel is the buffet breakfast!! We have never had such good choices for buffet breakfast in all the hotels that we have stayed in all our travels around the world! You should really have breakfast at the hotel if you intend to have a long day exploring the city. We also love the location of the hotel, which is outside the busy city. We had no problem walking from it to the city, and exploring the neighbourhoods along the way. We enjoyed our stay here, and can highly recommend this vibrant hotel to others visiting the city.

Had a fantastic stay at this hotel. Very clean and modern. The staff are very helpful. Special thanks to Mihaela on reception who provided us with lots of information on local transport, attractions and places to eat. Efficient service at breakfast, we were always promptly seated and the choice of food options was excellent. Would definitely return!

This was our first visit to the Hotel Gran Bilbao and the hotel has so much going for it that it's really a shame we can't give it a better review. First the positives: Room size - spacious for Europe and a really large bathroom. The beds were very comfortable and the place was completely clean and was kept that way. Staff - really helpful in getting taxis, answering questions, and providing details. Really well-done breakfast and an acceptable place for dinner. Water giveaway program. On every floor, the hotel had water stations where guests could fill existing water containers with either still or bubbly water, without charge, instead of selling the guests water in plastic bottles. But there were some problems too. First, location. Yes, technically the hotel is walkable to the center of Bilbao, but the hotel does not mention that the last third of the walk from the center back to the hotel includes a significantly steep and long hill. In the spring, fall, and winter months this is likely manageable for reasonably fit people, but during the summer it is a dangerous obstacle to walking. Anyone with a medical condition that might make a walk of that length and grade difficult needs to keep that in mind when booking HGB. The hill meant that we tended to be in the hotel some nights of our stay and that brought up the second problem: Inadequate WIFI. Despite our room's television offering a slate of popular streaming apps which included YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Prime, the hotel's WIFI was never strong enough to allow them to open and play. The WiFI was enough to power internet searches from our phones or other devices, for example, but not the television, A hotel handyman came up twice to try to make it better, but they never could get it to work correctly. Since vacations are sometimes we catch up on series or films we have missed at other times, this was a significant disappointment. The WIFI failure was a particular puzzle because the hotel was so technology-forward in other ways. For example, an app that let us open our hotel door from our phones and not have to worry about whether the key was going to work or not. Great! Overall we were satisfied with our stay at the hotel and would recommend it with disclosures about the location and the WiFI problem.

The hotel is very well situated and pleasant, however we faced an issue that can happen but the way it was dealt with was very unprofessional. We had several issues with the room's bathroom and the only feedback we received a the moment was that nobody was available to repair the damages over the weekend. When checking out I expressed my dissatisfaction with the situation and I was said that they wanted to propose a different room but as we were not in the room when they came they could not do it and that no commercial gesture would be done. Bottom line, we paid full price for a room for two nights with a bathroom in poor condition and no price reduction.

Responded 18 Aug 2023
Dear SoniaC5169, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your review. We sincerely regret reading that your stay at Hotel Gran Bilbao fell short of your expectations. Regarding the room’s bathroom issues that you have mentioned, and after having investigated it with our team, we would like to inform you that none of our rooms have windows in the bathroom, however they do have their own ventilation system. Nevertheless, we deeply regret that you left our hotel with this perception and that we have not met your expectations, we are sure that if you will give us a new opportunity on your next visit to Bilbao, we will be able to improve your impressions. We remain at your disposal for anything you may need. Kind regards, Mihaela Guest Experience
