A well-run pension in the heart of Granada.
First, The weather was hot enough that a cold shower was actually refreshing! Secondly, we booked it without realizing how perfect the location was. It was truly ideal for exploring Granada. And thirdly, and most of all, Pedro, who was running the place was so, so kind, helpful and friendly. He went above and beyond helping us secure tickets for the Alhambra even though it was sold out. He gave us numerous great, detailed recommendations and even gave my wife a lovely book when we left. He was very friendly to my 7 year old son and because of his general awesomeness I would highly recommend a stay here.
Positives:
1. Location is great - really could not be better. Near restaurants and the road up to Alhambra.
2. The hosts are friendly and Carlos was very helpful in suggestions and arranging things.
3. Rooms are clean (but basic) and I had a sink in mine.
4. There is (slow) wifi available free of charge.
Negatives:
1. Many of the rooms (including mine) have shared bathrooms. These are pretty bad. The toilets are tiny stalls (anyone who is tall/fat will struggle to fit inside) often not smelling great. There are three showers. They are mixed male/female and there is no changing area / hooks to hang towels / clothes. I was really worried during the stay that I'd walk in on some stranger showering. There is really no system to prevent this.
2. No air conditioning. Not sure if this is all rooms but certainly mine didn't have any air conditioning. Granada can get hot and it was oppressively so when I was there. I found it was so hot that it was hard to sleep. There are fans in the rooms but even at max strength they are pretty weak.
3. No breakfast. Their website (and some signs in the hostel) list a breakfast buffet. There is none.
4. If you leave luggage for the day if you have an afternoon/evening departure, the hosts will charge you per bag. Seemed somewhat petty to me to charge for this - first time I've seen anyone charge for it.
I sort of feel bad leaving 2 stars since the hosts are so nice and if you are just looking for a central base for your things then this is fine. But I really couldn't bear to stay here again. I actually had just come from some other cities in Andalusia where I had stayed in guesthouses and hostels, and this was probably the least pleasant stay of the lot (mostly for reasons 1/2 in the negatives).
Be aware: Don't try to come by car. Park at a near by location. Entrance to center is very limited if any. Only the family's son speaks English. So you need him to communicate. But he welcomed us and helped with the luggage. No elevator. Second floor.
They offer a breakfast in their dining room. Limited offering, but special since you dine yourself in a nicely furnished Spanish home just your family. You would need a reservation. It's 5 Euros per person.
We were created by Carlos when we arrived to get our keys and the rundown of our apartment and he was more than gracious. He explained everything we needed and gave us some great tips to see in the city.
The apartment was everything we needed and very homey. You are close to everything in the city and when your done you have a very relaxing “home” to come back to.
I would recommend this place to everyone.
"Be careful when booking if you don't want to share a bathroom and be aware that the parking is a few roads away and in a private garage."Read full review
"As with everything the more you can afford the better a room with a city view is best"Read full review
"Note at the moment there is construction site across the street so you might want to stay in the room not facing the street. This said, we were in a room facing the street but due to the good double glazed windows it wasn't too loud at all! The rooms are much quitter at night the the previous places we have stayed!"Read full review
"We had room 2, a quad, which meant it was semi-spacious for a couple. I don't recommend the shared bathroom facilities however! Might have minded them less when I was 20..."Read full review
