We made a day-before booking for a night stay to break our car journey from Wellington to the Bay of Islands. It was the most surprising little find. I think we were the only ones staying in the hotel and we had a large, clean room with amazing views. We went to the restaurant for an amazing lamb meal in... More

I was at Hillside for a conference last week, approximately my 16th in the last 10 years. A spectacular location that feels a million miles form anywhere but is only just over an hour out of Auckland. Stunning views, excellent food and a great conference room make it the perfect venue for me. Can't wait for my next trip.

The rooms are spacious and clean, the bedding and the towels are great, but the quality of the decor is poor and definitely not four star, all exceptionally cheap fixtures and fittings. The lighting in the conference room is fantastic, but the carpets were threadbare around the edges. The owners were obliging. The views are magnificent, but that's were the... More

We are very sorry to hear that Cherry and friends were so disappointed with their weekend. - part of a group of about 40 booked with us on a package deal. Unfortunately we were not made aware of their concerns at the time so missed the opportunity to adjust catering to better suit. To comment specifically on the points raised:... More

Booked a level 4 suite to obtain best views and were not disappointed. Hotel has a slightly jaded look to it but the dining, views and tranquility more than compensate. Be prepared to haul luggage up from the carpark and the road in is a bit rumpty bumpty but kind of adds to the country feel of the place. Certainly... More

We stopped off here on the first night of our honeymoon, as it was a good location from Auckland airport and Hobbiton (our destination the following day). We were extremely tired, and so booked in for dinner to enable us to have a nap and relax. The room was beautiful, with fantastic views out onto the hills. When going to... More

A great stop off just a few mins off the main drag. Spacious, peaceful and set in beautiful bush with very friendly and helpful staff. Wonderful food too, which wouldn't be out of place in some of Auckland's finer restaurants. Free wifi, which isn't always the case in places charging twice this rate. Downsides? No Sky TV if that's your... More

My husband and I stayed here as part of our 5-day trip through the central part of the North Island. The setting is fabulous and very unique. The road to the hotel off of SH1 is like traveling to another land - straight uphill. The views are well worth it. But, the rooms are very low-grade. Our room felt like... More

We appreciate you taking the trouble to post a review. Such a shame you booked the Family Room - our only room with that unusual 3 bed layout, extra large dining table and futon style sofa bed as an extra - to suit travelling families of 5+.
