We used this as a base to explore the Loire on bikes. It was a superb hotel in a secure, tranquil surroundings in the middle of a very quaint village. There were plenty of restaurants within a short walk or drive. The staff were very pleasant and helpful.

We just returned from an extraordinary visit to France! The trip was guided by Gregg Hall of Collette Travel & their planning was impeccable! Gregg was amazing with his knowledge, tips & insights! The tour was called France Magnifique & the experience was over the top! Our stay at the Fontevraud Hotel was especially nice! A mideval property, that served...

Fabulous hotel within the walled abbey's grounds. Our room was austere, in keeping with a monastery, yet we had every amenity we could wish for. It was quite comfortable and spacious. We were on the top floor with views over the grounds, an extra "office" room was great for stowing our luggage. Separate shower and toilet rooms were convenient. The...

Fabulous place to stay. A taxi from Saumur (nearest train station) costs about 30 Euros (there are buses, but only in peak season). Worth it though. Rooms are furnished to high standard (not huge, but comfortable); breakfast was excellent; but definitely the best thing is being able to wander around the abbey when the other visitors have gone home (and...

I thoroughly enjoyed one night at this hotel. You can explore the Abbey at dusk and it is an amazing experience. We had a modern suite and it was very nice and clean. The bed was a bit small for two large ones. We cannot give five stars as the service in the iBar was poor. We walked in several times...

We have stayed at other abbeys before, but nothing so completely monastically modernized as Fontevraud. All but two (there are two suites) of the rooms are exactly alike...small like a monk's cell, but well fitted out with an excellent bathroom. The public rooms are beautifully austere, and there is a Michelin One Star restaurant in the hotel. We had one...

Fontevraud L'Hotel has the most amazing location. On the grounds of a 12th century abbey that was once the largest in France and the burial place of Richard the Lionheart and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Closed following the Revolution and later reopened as a maximum security prison. Guests at the hotel have 24/7 access to the Abbey and grounds and we...

OK so our room was at a reduced price - possibly the smallest room we have ever stayed in. Spotless, lovely view, smallish bed, great shower and expensive breakfast. €16 each for a continental breakfast was a tad steep but the surroundings were wonderful. Bearing in mind the abbey had spent time as a prison I think our bedroom was...

Unlike every other luxury hotel in France we've been to (and where our furry friend has been made most welcome) this hotel bans pets. However whilst this is the prerogative of the hotel owner the issue is that this 'unusual for France' policy is not stated on the website and when I made an enquiry the response stated 'animals are...

Dear guests, We are sorry to read that you have been disappointed. Pets, that we really love, are effectively not allowed to come into the Abbey. The ban is not just for the hotel, but for all the historical complexe. Fontevraud Abbey is protected by its UNESCO World Heritage Site status and also as a national historical monument. You are...

We stayed 2 nights at the start of our Loire Chateau and Abbey sightseeing. The youthful reception staff all spoke commendable English and made sure we could find our way around. Official Description (provided by the hotel)
A stay at the heart of Fontevraud Royal Abbey? A night with Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of France and then Queen of England? Fontevraud L'Hotel offers an incomparable experience. At the Saint-Lazare priory, formerly the home of a community of nuns, the tradition of hospitality that is an intrinsic part of this place is being renewed. Sleeping in the tranquil silence of the Abbey, walking alone through the monastery as night falls ... These are magical private moments. The 54 rooms of this four-star hotel have been fitted out with great respect for this almost 1000 year-old monument, whose face is firmly turned towards the future. Each of the rooms is a cosy refuge: high-quality bedding, elegant contemporary furniture that uses noble materials such as oak, and is made with respect for the environment - all this made especially for Fontevraud L'Hotel ... more   less
