One of the most original hotel in the French capital. Opened over 100 years ago in a 17th century building, the Esmeralda Hotel bears the name of the gypsy girl that, thanks to her grace, illuminated the story by Victor Hugo. Central, well communicated, charming, quiet, comfortable ... Each room is unique and has its own personality. Artists such as Hugo Pratt, Bejart, Gainsbourg ... were regular clients at the hotel. You can also talk about Paris, art and literature as most of our receptionists are writers and poets with PhD at the Sorbonne. Please, do not miss the authentic flavor of the Latin Quarter. Be warmly welcomed at the nearest hotel to Notre Dame for the best value for money in Paris: the staff will immediately address all your queries with their proverbial kindness.

For such a good location, at such an affordable price, you can’t beat it. OK the curtain was hanging off, the bed didn’t fit properly in the room, the fixtures and fittings were tired... fir a place to crash it works. That said, I was travelling solo. Ideal for a stopover, as part of a wider experience elsewhere.

We have nothing but praise for the staff, who helped us greatly working out such things as getting around during the protests. You can't beat the location! We chose here based on price and location, however room 2 was a nightmare. The double bed was against the wall, too hard to get in for someone who isn't a skinny contortionist. The wall side of the bed is pushed up by the bed frame, so was like sleeping on a ledge, with the feeling of falling down the slope onto your partner. The toilet is the tiniest cupboard - my arm kept knocking off the light and my knees were against the door, which had to be open to clean oneself - you need to be a very unusually close family. We ended up using the toilet off the stairs! Closing the shower door was another matter of twisting your body in funny angles, and I couldn't raise my arms to wash properly, without even anywhere to put the soap. Back home, they wouldn't allow this place to be a home for the homeless, but we paid to have worse conditions than at a Salvation Army homeless shelter.

I saw 3 bed bugs on the pillow cases when we went to go to bed. If you check the sheets, there's track marks (blood) from the bed bugs stained on the sheets. I told the staff and they put us in another room. The next day, I'm assuming it was the owner, was irritated with me that I asked to be put in another room. He told me they didn't have any bed bugs on the 1st floor and they've only had them on the 4th floor (!). He then told me I likely brought the bugs in. Despite that and the fact that I didn't see any signs of bugs in the new room they put us in, I decided to stay to avoid the stress of trying to find a new hotel in a foreign land. Wow do I regret that now! We had to leave the next morning at 4am to catch our flight and I noticed shortly after leaving that I had 40+ bites on my shoulders, arms and back. That's when I sent them these pictures, disgusted and embarrassed, and they still denied it was because of their bed bug infestation and said the bites were from the "flying insect" type. I had to go to a wedding once we got home and I had swollen bites all over me. Total disappointment and shame on them.

What a wonderful experience. Hotel Esmeralda staff is warm and kind. The hotel itself has a wonderful Parisian style, delighting the guest with beauty and grace. Conveniently located on the Left Bank, near bato bus, Metro and taxi. Plumbing excellent.

On our trip our aim was to stay in historical places with character, and the Hotel Esmeralda is a winner in both categories. You will also not beat this place on location - it's as close to Point Zero as you can get. Out your window is a park and a view of Notre Dame. Downstairs is a famous bookshop and numerous eateries. This place is not luxurious. There are 400 year old stairs to climb. There is no aircon in the room, nor even a fridge (bad in a heatwave). The bathroom is actually good - roomy and clean. The staff are excellent, friendly, helpful and accommodating. They are excellent with kids. A rating is difficult to give for this place. Whether you choose to stay here is entirely dependent on whether you want to stay in a part of history, or prefer all the mod cons. If you are in the former category it's 5 stars, the latter only 2 stars.

The Esmeralda hotel is right across the street from Notre Dame. This is in the center of Paris. We got there by taking the metro, about a 20 minute ride.

What is the cheapest and convenient way to reach this hotel from airport?
RER B, if you stay one week, buy the Navigo pass for approx 23 eur but you need photos. Do check the day of the week because I guess it stops on Sunday evening
