From the red, flowery carpet on the staircase with its unhelpfully low bannister, to the Maltese Falcon lift, so replete with instructions for use one quailed to risk stepping inside (even the young Manager refused to use it) the historic Kings Arms, as it used to be known, takes you back to another time and place,a world of vast dining rooms... The Hotel is located in a really good position, close to the town center and to the railway station. The hall and the breakfast rooms are veri nice and really old style. Unfortunately some maintenance still need some investiment to be done. But at the end the location and the personnel are so lovely that other things pass through. The... More

This is my 3rd stay and it's my preferred place to stay 1 or 2 nights in Lancaster. Staff are really lovely, helpful yet professional. When reporting a couple of niggles their response is positive. Plenty of choice at breakfast, cooked or otherwise. A grand and light dining room. Rooms are very spacious, as are the bathrooms. It's always good... More

I had never stayed at this hotel before, though I am very familiar with Lancaster and its surroundings having gone to school there many moons ago. The occasion was a reunion of old school friends and I basically just needed somewhere to kip and as the hotel offered a bed plus breakfast for under £40, it fitted the bill. There... More

Literally 5 minutes from the train station, half that to the Lancaster Castle and near lots of shops and places to eat but not too loud traffic. The lovely Waterstones next door is also nice to kill some time. All staff were very friendly. The bed might be too hard for some, it was okay for us though. The windows... More

Average hotel which I imagine was lovely back in the 1960s. Worst thing was the window in my room, rattled all night. However great location at with pubs/restaurants only a short walk away. Staff friendly also. Would stay again but at a push.

I was looking for a bed for the night last Friday for the 'Light Up Lancaster' events so trawled the various late deal websites. Travel lodge was £45 and Royal Kings Arms £50. Having seen both from the outside picked the Kings as it's certainly impressive from the outside and merely a 2 minute walk from the Castle. Unfortunately, on... More

Room in the photos look lovely. In reality they are awful. The room was freezing. Wind howled through the ancient and mouldy windows! Wallpaper peeling off. Duvet was wafer thin, bed lumpy, you could feel every spring! No extra blankets. Phone did not work to call reception. Water for shower was Luke warm. Room smelt damp. There really was nothing... It's very hard not to like this hotel. Yes, it has some drawbacks such as the patchy water supply, and the dirty windows. However the staff were very helpful and the breakfast was excellent. We found the bed a little too soft but recognise that it may suit others. Less acceptable were the stained pillows. The building is basically a... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We always offer the best prices to our guests direct through hotel reception so be sure to call us first. Fantastic all round venue in a central location, ideal for weddings and functions, everything under one roof. In the heart of the historic city of Lancaster, with views of its famous castle, stands the Royal Kings Arms Hotel. Originally built in 1625 and later rebuilt in 1879, the hotel was immortalized by Charles Dickens in his tale of "The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices". This Grade II listed hotel has 55 comfortable en-suite bedrooms, including the luxury Castle Suite, with its four poster bed and views of the castle, the entrance to which is just 50 yards away. With origins dating back almost 1,000 years Lancaster Castle, a Grade 1 listed building, occupies a city-centre hilltop location on the site of three successive Roman forts and has been described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument but also of international importance". Other historic buildings in Lancaster include the Judge's Lodgings and the Doll Museum. The sea plays a big part in Lancaster's history and the Maritime Museum is a fascinating place to visit. Beyond the city, the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales are within easy reach, while the seaside resorts of Morecambe and Blackpool are a short drive away. Breakfast is available when checking in at reception, we do have car parking facilities at £5 per car per stay at the rear of the hotel. ... more   less
