Better than expected, some of the reviews I read about this place were ridiculous, room is smallish but perfectly adequate, fresh towels, bed spotless & tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast was lovely too, full Irish included in price. Only downside the bar/restaurant only opens Fri-Sun but we walked to Rathdrum (6K go the old road main road too dangerous) had dinner in lovely place Jacobs Well food was gorgeous then we ordered taxi bk was 12 euro. The meetings had lovely balcony I’d say if weather was nice it’d be gorgeous sitting there listening to the water. Couldn’t recommend this place enough loads of walks to do and perfect for a chill out too!!
We sat down and asked for some potatoes and veg for my son, we were then told there were no potato or vegetable left. This was at 5pm on a Sunday, never heard the likes of it. I was offered pasta and sauce, which was no more than tomato puree and cold tagliatelle. I then went to order pepperoni and salami pizza, was told there was none left of this either. Ordered a different kind and upon arrival of the food, we discovered they were simply Dr. Oetker frozen pizzas. Tried to charge us €10 for a pizza thats worth €1.99 in lidl. My friend complained and was dismissed and no apology was offered. We were told, all pizzas are cooked in an oven. Very belittling. They just said well what do you want me to do about it. Disgusting customer service.
The owner graciously led us to our room, which was clean and spacious, with the biggest bed I've ever slept in. I opened the window and heard the sound of the two rivers flowing together at one of THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SPOTS THESE EYES HAVE EVER GAZED UPON. In the pub downstairs the young lady behind the bar could not have been more gracious and my, did the Guinness flow. (In the next room the locals all tipped their hats. Listening to their conversation was an experience in itself). That night the restaurant was not serving, but the owner recommended dinner at the Woodenbridge, right down the road, and we had the oldest hotel in Ireland all to ourselves. The next morning I woke up at 5 to wander down to the Meeting of the Waters and spent two glorious hours just sitting and gazing and thinking. Our breakfast at the Meetings, with rain and then a rainbow outside the glass walls, was delicious and generous. In short, I cannot understand some of these mediocre reviews. THE MEETINGS ( I was also there in the summer of 2007) IS KIND OF PERFECT, ONE OF MY VERY FAVORITE PLACES ON PLANET EARTH. If I was lucky enough to live in Avoca, I'd be there every single night.…
The rooms are adequate and basic but the balcony view makes it special. Very relaxing sitting above the meeting of the rivers below and have a quiet ale. There is a pub downstairs and a restaurant. There is no reception - you need to catch the attention of the lady serving the bar in the pub. overall a 2 star accommodation.
Nice place and very relaxing. The staff and owners treated us very well advising on routes to travel and other places in the area where we may be able to eat out. Everything was neat and tidy and a supply of tea, coffee, milk and cereals provided in a common area for the guests.
