Situated in the vale of Avoca, one of Ireland’s most beautiful locations, and established in 1608, Woodenbridge Hotel is the oldest hotel in Ireland and one of the few remaining family-run hotels. The hotel itself overlooks the vale of Avoca and the amazing Woodenbridge Golf Club, while Woodenbridge lodge is adjacent to the main hotel and is surrounded by peaceful gardens on the banks of the Aughrim River. All of the rooms are en-suite and with complimentary wireless access. Our newly renovated Goldmines Bistro serves delicious, award -winning bar food every day from 12.30 to 9pm, with live music on selected nights. Our latest addition is the Smokehouse Restaurant at Woodenbridge Lodge, which is open from spring to late summer each year. On the banks of the River Aughrim, the Smokehouse promises to be the venue of the summer, with 180sqm of sheltered outdoor seating! Using our very own smokehouse rig and a variety of garden grown herbs, the Smokehouse offers a unique collection of smoked meats, seafood and vegetarian options. You can kick back and relax under a vast, fully-floored stretch tent that shades and shelters from the Irish weather. The Smokehouse is the ideal location to catch-up with friends and family! We're sure the Smokehouse will continue the 400 year tradition of timeless hospitality that is long associated with the Woodenbridge Hotel!

We had a room in the Lodge. Lovely view over the river with a balcony. Such a pity there wasn't a little table and chair to sit and have a drink.

Rooms had a card on the door advising room was sanitised. It was certainly clean but the sanitiser is just a spray used with the same cloth to clean everything.

Restaurant was lovely and food delicious.
Service was great and staff exceptionally friendly.
Disappointed although spacing was correct nobody wearing gloves.
Up to 4 staff behind the bar not observing distance.
We observed staff cleaning the tables chairs and menus using the same cloth for everything.

Breakfast the next morning was disappointing regarding the Covid 19 guidelines.

3 Waitress served from the same buffet, using the same serving tongs.
Toast was put in the toaster without using the tongs.
Milk jug handed to us by the spout not the handle.

No masks or gloves worn by anybody in the hotel.

We did not feel comfortable in the environment at all.

Response from Gerard O Brien, General Manager at Woodenbridge Hotel & Lodge
Responded 8 Jul 2020
Dear Mary, Thank you for your feedback. In relation to Covid-19 guidelines, we spent weeks going through them line by line to ensure full compliance. We brought back over 40 members of our team back three days before opening to do a full Covid induction and training and are doing our absolute best to follow them to the letter. We had a very busy first week and were overwhelmed with the amount of positive feedback we received, including numerous emails to the hotel. However I’m realistic to know you will not get it all right all the time. However there are a number of points in your review that I feel I should clarify: Firstly on the rooms, we’ve allocated additional time to cleaning all our rooms and a departure now takes one hour instead of the half hour it previously took. All the rooms are cleaned thoroughly first and then the major touch points in the room are disinfected using a product called D10, which is produced by Johnson Diversey and has been proven to kill Covid-19. The room is then checked by a supervisor and if they’re happy with it, the curtains, base of beds and other soft furnishings are then disinfected using a fogging device. The room is then closed off and nobody enters it until the guest arrives. As I said this whole process takes one hour for each room. Similar attention to details is observed in the Bistro and every menu, salt pepper table etc is disinfected after use. Similarly we’ve a person on every shift who’s only role is to walk through the ground floor sanitizing touch points. You mention the same cloth being used but these clots are only used with D10, so are saturated in it and therefore can be used on different surfaces and there is no risk of the virus living on the cloth. There is no requirement to wear gloves and actually this is not actively encouraged by environmental health officers, hand washing and use of appropriate hand sanitizer is far more effective than vinyl gloves. We have hand sanitizers on each entrance to the kitchen and Bistro and have a further 12 located on the ground floor alone. In relation to masks, again this is not required or specifically recommended in the guidelines, however we introduced a policy that if a guest is wearing a mask we will ask them on arrival if they would be more comfortable with us wearing a mask, so far nobody has taken up this offer. I do appreciate the feedback, we are trying our best but are only human too so I’ve no doubt we will improve in all areas as the weeks progress and I can assure you that myself and the rest of the management team are absolutely focused on doing things right. Hopefully see you back again sometime and thank you for the business.

From the moment we arrived we felt comfortable that this hotel and all its staff members were zealous in their efforts regarding Covid-19 sanitization and cleanliness. The room in the Lodge was spotless and the only sound we noticed was the soothing sound of the river outside. We had dinner booked and it was excellent in every aspect from the delightful service to the mouthwatering taste of the top quality food. It was so good we booked dinner straight away for the following evening and we enjoyed that even more. We have travelled a lot around Ireland but will remember our stay in Woodenbridge because of the fantastic and attentive staff, its memorable food and its incredible location.

My girlfriend and I visited the Woodenbridge Hotel in September after a recommendation from our friends. The location of the hotel is stunning and the interior is very lovely.

I was pleased to say that the staff took the Covid regulations very seriously as there was adequate social distancing and plenty of sanitation available which put me at ease immediately.

My girlfriend and I both enjoyed our steaks, they were delicious, well priced and paired perfectly with our bottle of red. The service we received was incredibly welcoming and efficient- special thanks to Gillian who served us!

It was our first time dining at the Wooden Bridge and we will definitely be returning.

Thank you for such a perfect evening!

we stayed 2 nights ,in what was described as newly renovated double room,we booked a double room The picture on booking showed a bight bed room with double and sngle bed ,the room we were given had v dark wallpaper ,which was torn and dented in places the room felt v damp bedding etc there were no bed side lockers just small tables by the bed with no drawers for storage ,these were painted in shabby sheek style there was just one bed in ,the the room which felt damp and cold and dark not just renovated like the picture on the booking hotel site ,the staff were pleasant and food good. i also found centipeed insects in the bathroom ,whch were gross and i flushed these down the loo, so ,for over 350 euro for 2 nights for the room and breakfast was just not good enough for what we ended up in , the money was also deducted from our credit card on checking in although we said we wanted to pay on leaving and had given credit card details on booking online on the hotelsite .we complained on leaving as to the discrepancy in the picure and description of the room we booked and what we ended up with, to be told we will get you a brighter room next time if you stay again here we thought this a disengenous response to a genuine complaint .not one bit good enough to the tune of having forked out over 350 euro

We booked this hotel because it seemed to get good reviews for its location, atmosphere and restaurant. The 2 out of 5 is for location. It’s set in a beautiful area. The rest left a lot to be desired.

Firstly, I will say I made my feelings about our stay known to reception on the way out and the girl was very nice and said if I emailed before our Next stay they would upgrade us but like I told her, I would never stay there again. Too little too late.

We checked in yesterday by another receptionist who was very friendly and nice but failed to warn us about a security light set up outside our room that would keep the room in constant daylight at nights. We tried everything to block the light out, see the picture for our attempts.

One other thing noted by the receptionist was last call at The bar was 10.45Pm, this was obviously a barefaced lie because the group of golfers we shared a floor with stumbled upstairs at 12.37am and stayed in the hall, laughing and joking loudly for about 45 minutes. It was horrible.

At dinner, we ordered a burger that had no seasoning with a side of watery peppery sauce (clearly they were trying to stretch it) and I had the lasagne. I ate the chips and some of the cheese off the lasagne but the rest went back to the kitchen, there was a full clove of garlic in the sauce which I bit into. I told my waitress Kayleigh about this and she just said oh sorry, I’ll tell the kitchen and never mentioned a thing about it after, even when we were paying for the meal, she never even acknowledged our disappointment with the meal, the amount of food that had been leftover, she just gave us our bill and off we went. Now on the door it talks about an award winning restaurant, I seriously don’t know how.

One last thing to mention there were a lot of people from Dublin staying at this hotel, one couple sat behind us at dinner bragged to the waitress that they just got out of Dublin in time for the lockdown, this same couple did not wear a mask when they were getting up and down to use the washroom. The hotel was very covid compliant other than the issue of guests being relaxed with mask rules. At the table it specifically mentioned to wear a mask when leaving the table and not to mingle with other tables On a laminated sheet, obviously the mingling rule doesn’t apply to golfers or people visiting from the same county.

Responded 24 Sept 2020
Michelle, Thank you for your feedback and I take on board all the issues you've raised. The security light shouldn’t obviously be shining into your room and can only assume it got dislodged at some point, but it should have been rectified and will be now. In terms of our food, we generally get very positive reviews about our food as can be seen from the many reviews below, but we obviously don’t always get it right and when this happens, it should have been brought to a managers attention and properly dealt with, so apologies for that and I will follow up on it. Thank you for acknowledging the hard work we’ve done on managing Covid, we have signs throughout the building and actively encourage all our guests to wear masks and will continue to do so.

The staff on the reception desk in the hotel and in the lodge were very nice and welcoming but we were told that there would be continental breakfast served in the lodge as we were lodge guests. When my partner went down for breakfast he was told that there was no breakfast there as they wasn't enough people so we would have to go over to the hotel so we did. When we went in we asked the reception could we take it to our room and she said of course no problem but when we went it and asked a lady in the restaurant she said no and we explained the girl at the desk said we could. The lady in the restaurant then said she would ask reception, we overheard the conversation and the reception said you have to let them take away their breakfast, the lady persisted to argue with the receptionist saying oh I cant let them take plates (despite the bar sending plates over the night before for our takeaway), the receptionist then told her to use the takeaway containers for us, eventually she agreed. I asked for a mix of continental and cooked breakfast and she then said no you will have to pay for your cooked breakfast of 2 sausages, 2 bacon and an egg, until another staff member said its OK you can have it free. It was so much hassle to get breakfast and the lady was so rude and unhelpful. We have another stay booked with them for November for the lodge but we changed it to the main hotel before breakfast as they don't have breakfast in the lodge but after what happened at breakfast we are considering cancelling the booking and not returning based on our horrible experience this morning. The lodge rooms were OK standard rooms, shower was terrible very low pressure, a women would struggle to wash her hair with it. Also the TV was very small with only 8 channels of which only 6 worked so they could do with upgrading to smart TV so guests can access their own Netflix and prime video etc considering the amount of younger couples who like to go away and watch a movie at nighttime.

Where to begin.... Wow. From correspondence prior to our trip, to the weekend itself, I firstly want to commend the absolutely incredible staff in this hotel. A true credit to the hospitality industry, each and every one of you.

Check in was prompt, seamless, and very informative. The room was a great size, spotlessly clean/sanitised, and the bed was soooo comfortable. We were in room 201, which was perfect. The view, left and right, across the vale was just sublime.

The IPAs on tap were delicious, and we were utterly blissful sat on the picnic benches out front, soaking up the atmosphere, tranquility and sunshine.

Dinner was delicious, as was breakfast (please consider the fact its table service for breakfast, and not buffet, given the current climate, so in that regard, may not be exactly what one may hope), so no gripes or complaints at all. Also, regarding dinner, just phone reception from your room (dial 0) give them a time, and your room number, and it's really as simple as that. There's more than adequate space therein to maintain sufficient distance from other diners, and all staff wore masks/visors whilst serving.

Pro tip: Cross the road just to the right of the hotel, where their lodge is, and follow the path behind the lodge building to a stunning river walk, that expands into a massive field. Fish in the river, horses in the field, and nothing but birdsong and the water are audible. Fantastic.

Oh, and be sure to check out the WW1 Memorial to the Wicklow dead on the left side of the bridge facing the hotel. And be sure to check out the Meeting of the Waters a couple of miles down the road, past the golf course. Gorgeous little spot.

We were truly disappointed to be leaving upon check out. We are already planning to return ASAP.

I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this hotel to anyone.

Booked an evening meal for my partners special birthday. Lovely table overlooking the forest reserved for us. Food good and plentiful finished off with complimentary desert complete with candle and Happy Birthday playing in the background. Lovely surprise and superb customer service. COVID-19 precautions being observed with lots of touch point cleaning discreetly being carried out. Thank you so much for attention.

For my wife's birthday we had a 3 night stay in the Hotel. All of the staff were extremely professional, fiendly and helpful. A big thanks to Mark for his help and advice regarding cycle routes.
We really enjoyed the food especially the breakfasts. We had a fantastic room (103) with a balcony and beautiful views of the vale and the mountains. With no air con in the room,it was a bit too warm during the night but this did not detract from a great bedroom.
We brought our bikes ( management kindly stored our bikes safely)and we cycled on two of the days and also walked Lugnaquilla on the other day.
A magical birthday break and great hotel!! Thanks again to all the staff.

I had a room with a double bed and a single bed, best to ask the hotel questions like this. Avoca is a beautiful place and worth a trip but not sure about woodenbridge, might be ok for a family trip but I went with my girlfriend and my issues were mostly with the bar service and the fact that this once beautiful hotel full of old world charm is now like any other glass box. Enjoy
