What a wonderful experience, Abbey's BnB was perfect. Spotlessly clean, fabulous location and delicious breakfast. Georgina was the most gracious host, super friendly and so very helpful without being over the top.
As previously stated, the establishment is clean but the rooms are very small. We could barely walk around the bed in the room. The place does not have a communal room for guests so the pokey nature of the rooms felt more oppressive. The bathroom was the size of a cupboard although admitedly the appliances were new, but even the sink was the size of a cereal bowl. The wifi was a good signal throughout the house and the sound insulation from outside noise was adequate.
The breakfast was okay. However, we were served cheap sausages, salty bacon and a tablespoon of beans each morning we stayed (and instant coffee one morning). I couldn't help thinking that the B&B could have been just a little more imaginative by serving local produce and perhaps displaying a picture of the local farm from where the produce originated (a B&B in Wales did this and gave the breakfast experience a local and personal touch). Instead it felt that the sausages and bacon had been sourced from the local Tesco superstore and at that from the bargain aisle.
Scattered around the walls are "don't do" signs such as not using towels for make up removal, no smoking or you will be ejected, credit card payments will incur additonal fees etc. Very welcoming. I wondered if my perception of the experience had been affected by having stayed in top notch hotels around the world. Perhaps. But I do not believe that I should suffer a poor customer experience when I am paying 70 Euros for the room.
Tips on visiting the area: if you have a car drive to Arthurstown and go on the Ferry to Passage East in Waterford and drive to Dunmore East, a beautiful fishing village (we eat outdoors at the Cliff restaurant). Also, try to visit Hook Head ( we ate at the Village Kitchen in Slade). Both restaurants were very decent places at affordable prices. Bear in mind that Ireland still thinks there is a boom going on and most restaurants are still living in cloud cookoo land by seeking main course meals for 38 Euros. Shop around.
