Like many people it was the first attempt at trip away since before the pandemic and we were under no illusions that things have changed somewhat for hotel stays.
We booked a family room and were very underwhelmed with the room - it was quite dated, with an ancient television, right beside the lift and the noise of people going to and from rooms and the bar did not make for a good first night. To be fair to the hotel after a quick word with the receptionist the next day they moved us no problem at all.
Fresh start! New room, much quieter location and a fan!!
Hotel itself is quite dated but clean. The reception area and the room itself seemed quite bare and I wonder is this an attempt to make sanitising and cleaning easier in the current climate.
The bar is large and we ate the food from there the first night. Food was fine, what you would expect from a bar menu....burgers, fish and chips etc.
There is a leisure club attached. Make sure you phone ahead to make sure there is room in the pool as numbers are limited due to covid restrictions. Water temperature was perfect....the kids loved it.
Staff in the hotel are very pleasant and professional. I'm sure trying to please customers and observe covid regulations is a minefield but they are doing a good job.
Finally we come to the only disappointment.....the breakfast! My favourite part of a hotel stay anywhere is the classic buffet breakfast. It doesn't exist here, again most likely due to covid restrictions. You are seated and order by ticking options on a card. It is limited and only that it was included in the price we would have went up the road to the Ardkeen Centre.
As far as covid is concerned masks must be worn at all times in public areas and orders in the bar are taken from the tables. There is hand sanitiser at various locations such as outside elevators and entrances to dining areas.
PRO'S - Location just off the outer ring road made travelling to Tramore and other beaches handy.
Staff were friendly and very obliging.
Pool is excellent.
CON'S - An obvious difference in room standards.
The Breakfast
Main drawbacks are the 200 euro deposit you pay on check in as most hotels do not ask for this. View from room was bad as just overlooked a roof with cigarettes being dumped there. The breakfast could be better and scrambled eggs didn't seem fresh. The floor we were on had no air conditioning and was unbearably hot even with the window wide open. In the end it took 3 fans for me to be able to sleep. The bar was also so hot at night and I asked staff if there was anything they could do as no nearby windows to open but there was nothing they could do. Surely this must be a safety hazard also?
I was in the swimming pool every day and the staff were lovely but noticed dirt in the pool and yellow marks along the wall at water level which should be cleaned.we used the changing room showers all the days there and the same dirty long black hairs were along the walls of the shower the full 4 days I was there so it clearly wasn't being cleaned which is a disgrace as it should be cleaned daily, even multiple times a day. They were obviously just picking up empty shower gel bottles etc but not actually cleaning the shower walls.
Upon check out we were not asked how everything was and the reception staff were the least helpful in the hotel.
Food was terrible and if it was cheap you could argue you get what you pay for but man it was bad.
Rooms were really humid asked for a fan Saturday morning received it Sunday evening no explanation. My daughter's had a shower after a day at the beach so there was some sand on the floor. Next morning cleaning we got fresh towels but sand was left on the floor. We cleaned it up ourselves and made our own beds??
In the bar (other than 2 really good staff members) you were left waiting for your drinks or tables to be cleaned and I mean waiting.
You would think with the push for stay cation 2020 there would be an effort made to be a standout performer.
The bar menu leaves a lot to be desired. Even with minimal customers ordering food and drinks, service was slow. 2hrs for a main and a dessert.
Breakfast was the same. Stood for 15mins waiting to be seated. Decided to just take a seat. Only 1 member of staff on, struggling to keep up with cleaning tables. I felt sorry for her as she was getting confused with tea and coffee orders. Obnoxious techno-esque music being played during breakfast... Quite annoying and unnecessary by all counts.
Despite all the members of staff being quite friendly, Think I will look for a different place the next time I stay in Waterford.
After speaking with reception on the first morning, we were assured that the fans were left on accidentally and that it wouldn’t happen again. Having lost a full night’s sleep, I expected a token of some sort by way of apology, even if it was just a free drink in the bar, but we just about got the reassurance that the fans would be switched off that evening when the kitchens closed.
When we returned to the hotel that evening, I mentioned to the (different) receptionist on duty about the fans the previous night and confirmed that they would indeed be switched off. She assured me that they would and was very polite and pleasant to my face, but my husband was facing me as I walked away from her and she rolled her eyes behind my back when I turned to walk away!
When we returned to the room, we discovered that housekeeping staff had disposed of items of ours that weren’t in the bin or located anywhere near the bin. They may not have been important items, but they weren’t for disposal. 2 soft drinks were located on bedside lockers, and an empty packaging box was left on top of our suitcase for safely transporting an item home again. All 3 items were gone. The bin was not near any of these items, so they shouldn’t have been touched. Inadequately trained housekeeping staff is another addition to the growing list of flaws in this poorly run hotel.
Breakfast was of poor quality; just about warm and left a lot to be desired. The food menu in the bar is disappointing, with a very poor choice of dishes. We ate elsewhere every evening.
The swimming pool was a pleasant experience, however. It was clean, warm, and very well monitored. It was convenient that they provide towels, and the changing rooms were clean any time we visited. The staff at the pool were very helpful, friendly & chatty.
Upon checkout we weren’t asked how everything was, which would be standard practice, from experience. Had we been asked; I would have enlightened the receptionist on some of the above issues. However, considering the demeanour of the reception staff throughout our stay, I’m not sure there would have been any point mentioning any issues. Perhaps a review for future visitors to see what the hotel is really like would be more purposeful.
Food was great and staff were very helpful. Very comfortable & clean rooms . Pool and leisure Center very clean and was very family friendly . Staff here were great too.
Friday 12th November still no call so I ring and reception takes my details and says someone will ring you today or Monday (the event manager) to give you a time, so perfect I waitedtill Tuesday 16th and no call.
Been Tuesday 16th November I decide to ring to be told that the event is fully booked and is imposible I booked on Friday....
I rang on Friday and was told I would get a time this week so I told my kids we were going there like every year and they were all EXCITED. With what face do I tell them today ohhh no your mam was just called a lyer over the phone and santa does not want to see you??? Or will I go up and let the lovely lady in reception tell them? I am just sooo disappointed, your customer service must be the worse I have come across, playing with kids feeling like this
