Detailed Reviews
Group of us staying for a hen party in Westport. When we arrived all guests were asked for a €30 cash only security deposit. Caused a bit of a nuisance for the group and not everyone had cash. So check in took longer than necessary. Room was grand. Just a plain room with loads of bunk beds. Not really enough sockets in the room for everyone needing to charge phones etc. Grand if you just want to rest your head for the night, bedsheets were clean and fresh. Toilets and shower area clean. No issues
Issue with night porter/security man on shift. Rude to different groups of us. Refused to show us the correct door up to our room, refused to let some of the girls into the communal room to get bottles of water filled. Some of the girls had brought home bags of chips and didn’t want to be eating in the bedroom, gave out that they were sitting on steps outside the hostel to each their food. Threatening behavior and based on my own opinion, clearly just because we were women. My advice, teach him basic manners and respect! Spoke to manager next morning who took it on board but said she has never had complaint about him before but based on previous reviews on this…. I think that’s a lie.
Anyway, overall great weekend in Westport. Just need to sort out the night porter

I stayed in a four bed mixed dorm on Friday, in fairness the room was fine but had no blind or curtain on window. So defo pack an eye mask. I was greeted by the receptionist Thomas and he was very kind and friendly. He gave me lots of local knowledge and information on Achill. The common area is a large kitchen and dining room. Breakfast was included brown bread, white bread, selection of jams, real butter, porridge and tea/ coffee. It is a great location beside all the pubs and restaurants. The parking is three euro for the day which is not bad at all. I just have to say this was the most pricey hostel I have stayed in and I have stayed in hostels all over the world. Check in 3.00pm or 3.30pm and check out 10am.

Pros: spacious and well equipped kitchen, cool old building, great town centre location close to cafés, shops, bike hire, etc, good wifi
Cons: All rooms are mixed gender, walls very thin so you’ll hear anything in the room next to you, showers on a 10 second timer until you have to press the water again, we booked 2 beds in a 4-person dorm (for two girls) and were instead put in a 6-person.
Notes: Ask for the wifi network and password at the front desk as it isn’t the “OLDMILL” network that they advertise. We actually weren’t asked for the €30 cash deposit. Would definitely advise bringing earplugs for a less disturbed sleep.
All in all, fine for a night or two, friendly staff and nice kitchen. Our main complaint (noise) can be mitigated worth earplugs, and just be aware that it there are no female only dorms.

This is a scam and a scam.
We booked the hostel for 3 nights and paid upon arrival. On the second day we decided to extend it for another night, at the reception we were allowed and we paid. On the last day, in the evening, we were faced with the fact of paying another 30 euros, citing the fact that it was more expensive on Saturday or we would have to move out of the hostel.

The hostel is in a great location and as its the only one in town you don't have many options. It's basic but that's all you want.
The reason for the review is the terrible staff, the checking lady was incredibly rude, lacked any warmth and a kind word and they inforced a policy of a thirty euro deposit per person ontop of the twenty five euro for the bed. You also are not told before of the deposit and that it has to be in cash until you check in. (Its in small print on the website) not mentioned in the confirmation or when you book.
On checkout we were told a guest asked us keep the noise down last night (which was correct, but we did straight away) and hence this she refused to give is back our deposit.
We were never told about this before but there is a laminated sign in reception which was pointed out afterwards.
I have stayed in multiple hostels around the world, and no where ever refuses a deposit for noise, no staff were called the verify, just one person's word against another and then refuse to return a deposit.
We obviously argued this, the owner is very simple, while we were disputing her taking our deposit she even said 'how can we afford to pay staff when people are paying twenty five euro a night' - so the business model is to rob peoples deposit to cover staff wages- disgusting.
She finally decided to only take 70 euros off the six of us and return the rest...
Making the rules up as she goes along.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone and will make sure to tell others to avoid solely due to the management and how they just refuse to return your deposit.
Why not just charge 35euro per person and run an honest business.

Upon arrival we were told that we had to pay a cash deposit of €30 per head and not allowed into the room until this was paid. Wasn’t ideal seen as we had cycled 70km to get there and nobody had any cash.
We then had to pay €2 to rent a towel that looked like it was white in 1867. The room was poor, two tiny windows that would barely open meant it was poorly ventilated and there were only two plug sockets for a 4 bed room
This place was not disgusting, just terrible.

I had 2 good nights at the Mill and would happily return. Checking in was easy and Niamh was very helpful in providing tips on things to do in Westport. Facilities were good, particularly the kitchen and newly nicely decorated shower and toilet room. The location in the centre of town is ideal for visiting pubs and shops. I'd definitely return when next in Westport.

I stayed at this hostel with my boyfriend and four friends, we knew not to expect much and all we wanted was somewhere to rest our heads after a night out. We rented out a dorm for the 5 of us (4 guys and 1 girl).
Check in was fine. However, My boyfriend and I arrived first and were told we could not access the room unless we paid the security deposit for everyone staying.. even though they still had to go through the check in process. Receptionist was really nice and chatty (long haired man).
Rooms are basic but like I said, it was only somewhere to lay our heads for the night. I probably would not stay here for any other purpose.
Reason for the lack of stars is when we returned that night. I was treated like a cheap pr*stitute by the night porter. We were stalked through the courtyard by the night porter and questioned as to where I was going because there was "no mixed dorms booked". I informed him that I was absolutely a paying resident for the night and I was staying with my boyfriend and his friends. He still tried stopping us from continuing because according to him I was not a guest ... so what was I? just some girl the four guys picked up in a bar and were looking to take back?. It was incredibly offensive. Eventually, I was proven to be correct and he didn't even apologize.
The next morning, cautious that checkout was BEFORE 10 and wanting to get on the road. We decided to check out at 8:30 but reception was closed?. There was bread and tea, so we continued to wait. We called the reception number numerous times and eventually got an answer from a woman, who I assume is the lady everyone gives out about. She told us she was "on the way" and after an hour, we still did not see her. We just left and told our friend to collect the security deposit. There was also another guest waiting to climb Croagh Patrick who could not check out because of the absence- completely delaying everyones day and again without an apology.
I just could not understand why the receptionist wasnt there so close to check out time?

Good points...
Cheap.
Warm room.
Friendly reception.
Easy to book.
Bad...
Dirty sheets, dried blood, not washed properly.
Torn bed linen.
Not much to hang clothes apart from single hook in showers.
Late night noisy guests.
Bed bugs!
Hard to use keycode pad on room door, took a few tries to open.
