We stayed at the Ellison last weekend as went over to Castlebar to see Christy Moore, we arrived before lunchtime, we had 2 suites booked and the the girls on reception couldn't have been more friendly, they said one room was ready so we could get in early to drop our bags. They also arranged a taxi for us to the airport on the Sunday and booked us in for breakfast.

The hotel itself is lovely and our suites were bright and spacious, there were robes and slippers in both rooms, we had a king size bed and a single bed in each room along with a sofa and a mini kitchen. There is free water in the room, tea and coffee making facilities and free biscuits.

The bathroom had a range of toiletries too. The hotel is in a brilliant location and is right behind the Royal Theatre, we heard that there was a walkway between the hotels but we didn't use this.

Breakfast in the morning was lovely it was a help yourself buffet and the food was of a really good quality.

We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back again if we were ever in Castlebar.

Response from Guest Relations Manager, Guest Services / Front Office at The Ellison

Dear T and K McCormack, Many thanks for taking the time to leave us such a detailed (and excellent!) review. We I'm glad you found the reception team to be friendly – they are such an asset to the hotel. I’m glad you were able to make use of an early check in. It can be the luck of the draw – but I’m glad fortune favoured you. Thanks for mentioning all the perks of our suites. I agree they are lovely and bright and spacious. The robes and slippers make it all a bit more special, and the seating areas are great to unwind after a busy day shopping, visiting, or enjoying a show at the TF. I agree the breakfast here is wonderful, the banana bread is the best I’ve ever tasted. I’ll pass your feedback to Chef. Thanks again for the lovely review. We hope to welcome you another time.

We stayed at The Ellison when attending ABBA by Candlelight in The Royal Theatre and we were so impressed with this hotel. The staff, from reception, to the restaurant, to room service were so friendly and helpful and made you feel so welcome. We had both dinner and breakfast and the food was fabulous 😍 The room was spotless and the beds were comfortable!! The location is perfect and there is a shop and McDonald's just across the road if you get the late night munchies. Highly recommend 👏👏

I booked a room in this hotel last minute on a Monday evening as my dad is extremely unwell and I needed to be close to the hospital. Sorcha on reception was so caring and went above and beyond to organise room service for me when I arrived at the hotel just after 9pm. Dinner and breakfast were top, couldn't fault anything. Bed was super comfy and they even upgraded my room. Honestly I felt like a celebrity the way I was treated and it took alot of stress away knowing that the hospital was just across the road and I could be there if dad needed me. Thanks to all the staff, would highly recommend this hotel Hope to see you again soon under better circumstances, I hear your Afternoon Tea is worth a try!! ❤️

My wife and I booked a two night stay here and paid around 30 euros extra to upgrade to one of their deluxe rooms that states it comes with a king bed and other luxury amenities.

Checking-in and getting the room type we reserved was a nightmare, particularly when we were on holiday from the United States trying to make the most of our time. After receiving our room keys the first time we brought all of our luggage to a room on the third floor with a double bed and a single bed that looked a bit run down compared to the pictures we saw when making our reservation. As someone who worked in the hospitality industry for a decade, I figured it was just a mistake.

My wife went downstairs to get the keys to a proper room and returned after the front desk told her that the double bed was really a king, because they don't really have king beds in Ireland only queens. I wasn't buying that explanation and went to the front desk myself where they tried to tell me the same thing. Trying to give them the benefit of the doubt, I brought up their reservations page showed them the picture of what was definitely a king bed pictured and explicitly stated with their picture of a deluxe room, showed our e-mail confirmation of that room type and was told again that in Ireland a King Bed is a Queen.

The manager then came out when I started to demand a room that resembled what we booked or a full-refund, and asked me if I had put in a note with the reservation requesting a king bed. At which point I showed her the reservation, which shows a picture of what is clearly a king bed and states in text that the room has a king bed and asked her as a hospitality professional what type of bed she would expect to check into when booking that room. She then instructed her staff to go see if they had a room of that type available. After several minutes of waiting in the lobby, with no apology we were told they had a room of the type pictured available.

We got up to that room an hour after we originally arrived and it was everything we could want in a hotel room. We received a call asking if the room would be satisfactory, we said yes, and that was it.

We were made to feel stupid and rude by the staff when we only wanted the room type we had booked. Had they even offered a half-hearted apology it would have meant a lot to us. Instead we were left with a bad taste in our mouths whenever we were in the hotel and avoided the bar, restaurant and front desk for our stay.

This was by far the worst experience I've had after decades of traveling and being on the other side of a front desk was a master class in how not to resolve conflict with guests. Given how dismissive the staff were of us I can only imagine this treatment of guests, of trying to pass off a subpar room as the deluxe and lying to tourists who they think don't know any better is a regular occurrence. Will never set foot in The Ellison again or any Comer Group Hotel. Truly disgusted by what should have so easily been a lovely experience.

My husband and I are senior citizens and we booked a one night stay in the Ellison. Our room was clean and comfortable. I went to the bar/dining area of the hotel which are adjoined to each other but separated by a wooden partition. It was approximately 7pm. I asked about getting a sandwich and was told that I could not eat it in the bar which was empty or lobby area which was at that time practically empty. I was told I would have to eat it in my room and incur a service charge also. I declined their offer. I felt like I was in a nursing home or something. A glass of wine is also way overpriced at €8. This hotel is all about the money .

We stayed at this hotel, while visiting family and friends. The staff are so helpful, I'm a wheelchair user, so it was so nice to have a wet room, which made it very easy for me to use. Food in the restaurant was excellent, my son and my friends had a meal with us on our last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Reception staff were very helpful and very friendly. Will definitely be going back at some point . If we could we would give it 10 stars.

Came for a meal in the restaurant during the day because there were vegan options on the menu. I opted for the cauliflower and curry burger. It sounded interesting and I imagined something like a fresh cauliflower steak and a lovely creamy curry sauce..
Unfortunately the reality was quite different. The cauliflower had been deep fried before in some light batter. The inside was a mush of cauliflower and I couldn’t taste any curry seasoning at all. The burger was dry except for some chutney which was its saving grace. It was served with limp spinach leaves and a few fries and was priced at €18!!! Way over priced for what was delivered.
A asked if they had any vegan mayo of the fries .. they didn’t and it also asked for a vegan Irish coffee .. not possible.
Im wondering when it will dawn on people that we vegans like a FULL vegan dining experience the same as any other non vegan person..
Staff were friendly although they delivered us bread half way through our main food instead of before. And with butter!! (No thought given to being vegan- and wonder if they would have been so laid back if it were the fact I was allergic to dairy)

Not impressed unlikely to recommend or return

Stayed in The Ellison on February 13th for 1 night. From start to finish the stay was excellent. Firstly ample parking in multi storey carpark next to hotel with lifts to rooms and reception from carpark. This carpark was free to residents. Reception staff very friendly on arrival and very helpful. Room was to front of hotel on 4th floor but there was little or no noise from what is a busy road. Room was spotless as was ensuite. Breakfast was very good in the morning this being self service and there was ample choices from selection of cereals to cooked breakfasts. No shortage of tea or coffee. Waiting staff were again very polite and helpful. This hotel is perfect location for shows/events in The TF Royal Theatre and is only a 2 minute walk to this venue. Also most convenient for shopping in Castlebar Town. Highly recommend this hotel and look forward to returning in the not too distant future ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Superb located hotel across from the Mayo Peace Garden with easy access to local roads. Many shops (and pubs) nearby. Wonderful breakfast well organised spread and the hosts friendly and chatty whilst keeping tea and coffee topped up. The attached (free to guests) carpark is fantastic to avoid the weather and can stroll into hotel from the carpark itself making moving luggage and belongings super easy. Its very accesibility friendly in my view too. Look forward to calling by again. TM
