Our trekking group of 21, XiCammini, from Malta on a week of pilgrimage walks in the west of Ireland was booked in for 5 nights at the Ivy Tower. We were welcomed in from the first night when we arrived late. Everyone from Mary McHugh and her energetic and attentive staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and every request was met with a smile!

This hotel was perfect for us with a great location for our walks (including the challenging climb up Croagh Patrick!) It is central for shopping and sightseeing and for me it was the ideal place to explore my roots in Castlebar itself and Islandeady.

We trekkers started our day with the Full Irish breakfast, a full plate of all the good Irish ingredients to keep us going for hours! Lots of choices, too, for those special diets. Superb food as was the evening meal with plates of delicious food.

We were entertained well on Friday evening with a sing along in the spacious bar attached. A really memorable evening! Mary also recommended the local pubs that had live music, so a great choice for an evening's entertainment.

We came as guests but left as friends! We hope to be back again for more trekking or relaxing as it really is a good value hotel in a great location.
Thank you Mary and your staff for such personalized care.

We had an event here recently for a double birthday celebration and what can we say, but wow! We were looked after from start to finish. Everything from the rooms, breakfast, servic, staff and food for the party was just excellent. Nothing was too much to ask for, even our last minute request to put on a slideshow of photos for the party. Our check out was even enjoyable and when we were saying our goodbyes and had picked up our cakes from the party, the lady on reception was very quick to come over and offer us teas and coffees while sitting in
the foyer, something that was a lovely touch. Thank you to all at the Ivy Tower and we most certainly will be back to stay!

Recently stayed in Ivy Towers and was delighted with our stay. Very comfortable, Mary, Pauline and staff were extremely helpful. Covid restrictions adhered too at all times making our stay safe and worry free. Good food and lovely bedroom.
Would recommend and would return again.

We were a party of 4 and booked 2 bedrooms for 2 nights. Half of us had quite a nice, bright twin room on the first floor. Myself and partner were given a room several doors along. What a difference, it was absolutely awful. The carpets throughout the hotel leave a lot to be desired, the room decor was just ancient and the bathroom was truly woeful. But the worst thing was the lack of view. Both windows in bedroom and bathroom looked out at walls. The bedroom one had a concrete wall a few feet away and in between the window and wall was a flat roof stacked with rubbish! The bathroom window wasn't actually a window, it was an opening which opened onto a dark something right outside it. Awful. I immediately phoned reception to ask for a move, was told they were fully booked. So I asked about a refund and was told that as the booking was through booking.com I had to sort it through them. Of course this wasn't possible. The reception did tell me that they were so busy they even rented out a room just a few minutes previously and the room had a water leak! Strange. Very disappointed in the room which was just awful. So much so I didn't spend much time in it apart from sleeping and washing. The bed was fine.

Only one of our party ate a meal in the hotel, a vegetarian meal, she said it was OK. We didn't spend any time in the hotel other than to sleep and have breakfast. Breakfast was not at all good. Poor quality ingredients, concentrate juice (apple or orange). I asked for 2 soft poached eggs, got 2 hard boiled ones. My friend asked for an omelette, it was burnt on one side. Breakfast was so poor my other half didn't even bother with breakfast on the second day. Wish I hadn't either!

The location was OK, within a short walking distance of Castlebar. The car park had ample parking.

Staff were good except for reception when we asked for a refund the first day. They explained that most people just use the hotel to go to concerts etc next door. But that's no excuse. The whole place is tired and tatty and really could do with an injection of cash and taste.

We can thankfully say we have no idea what the experience is like to stay here but please, please avoid this place for food. There are plenty of alternative more delightful places to eat in the Castlebar area.
From the overcooked, dry spicy chicken wings to the overpriced frozen southern fried chicken burger to the hockey puck "fresh beef burger" that tasted more like it was out of the microwave. On to the profiteroles that were still frozen solid inside!
Also a note to the manager, while a lot of people like dogs they do not necessarily want the hotel owners dogs roaming around them while they are trying to eat a meal.
We spoke to a couple near our table, they reserved an area for a special occasion and when they arrived it wasn't even ready.
People must be landing in here by accident, I definitely would not go there again.

Should not be called a hotel, more likely B&noB. When away with work you're on a tight schedule, so i made sure to be at breakfast for the 7:30am opening time but guess what, place was a ghost town with one non-interested employee who shortly said Chef is Late. 15 minutes later chef still not there at which point i looked for a refund for the cost of the breakfast but no refund can be got stated the same monosyllabic employee.

On a recent trip to castlebar my 8 year old autistic daughter required bathroom facilities and the welcome inn was the closest place to where we were. I asked where the facilities were as my child was very distressed beside me and needed to use the bathroom urgently. I was greeted by a very rude member of staff in reception who when I asked where the bathroom was questioned if I was dining or staying in the hotel. When I said it was an emergency as my child just needed the bathroom she sighed at me and pulled a face and said I needed to sign covid forms and she would have to find a member of staff to bring us to the bathroom. She was extremely rude in an already stressful situation. My daughter is non verbal and does not understand been left waiting while she is so upset. Would never set foot inside this establishment again!!

Response from Mary Mc Hugh, Other at Ivy Tower Hotel
Responded 15 Feb 2022
Just saw this review and need to address some issues. This was during the covid restrictions time and only customers and guests were allowed on the premises. There were different rules for customers and guests set down by he government. To have to refuse people such as this person, a father with a young child, a pregnant woman and others is upsetting and facial expressions can often convey this upset. According to restrictions in place at the time we were not allowed to permit access to this lady and her daughter. Restrictions required all persons entering the premises to be recorded. Sometimes following the rules has consequences and we are sorry this lady felt we did not look after her properly

The location was good and central. Free car park available. Very friendly and helpful staff. Comfortable bed. That's it. The bathroom was cold and the room a little outdated. There was loud noise coming from the pub as the service area/storage lies beneath the rooms window. Sorry to say but wasn't worth the money paid.

Service was incredibly slow. My friends and I were waiting an hour to even get our orders taken and another half hour to get our drinks. The bar manager and the owner were incredibly rude and unprofessional to us, complaining that they were understaffed and tried to shift the blame for the poor service on us, claiming that we were rude. They then told us that we should leave if we were unhappy with the service. There are plenty of great bars in Castlebar, don’t waste your time at this one.

We stayed over here last night after we got a late cancellation. It made such a difference to our weekend. The hotel is clean and comfortable and very friendly. Nothing is too much trouble and the rooms are clean and comfortable with all the usual amenities. It is ideally situated in the centre of town close to lots of local bars and great restaurants. We had the most delicious freshly cooked breakfast this morning with superb service by every one of the staff. Thank you each and everyone of you from those who served us in the bar last night to breakfast this morning. We are already planning another long weekend soon and will work around dates when we can get in here. Highly recommended, excellent staff and service.
