Originally built in 1867, this charming town house has been tastefully renovated in a modern style, whilst retaining its historic charm, with stained glass windows and high coved ceilings. Once used as a Christian Brothers house, Scholars now provides all the facilities and features of modern accommodation. It occupies a privileged position in the centre of the historic town of Drogheda, County Louth, only 20 minutes from Dublin airport via the nearby M1 motorway.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I was taken to Scholars by my daughter and friend as a birthday treat. It was a wonderful experience and the afternoon tea was second to none in presentation, ambience and the food was on a par with The Ritz London afternoon tea. I would highly recommend the afternoon tea experience as you will not be disappointed. The kind staff boxed up some cakes we were unable to eat there to take home.

Too small, too crowded parking all gone. Nice place but no room. It’s an ex Christian brothers house. That’s why it retains slight spooky atmosphere. There was a quality I simply couldn’t ascertain it’s source, it definitely has a horror film, type quality to it.

We came to Scholars for afternoon tea which was gluten free. We told the receptionist we did not want turkey or salmon when booking. Nothing was too much trouble. From the moment we arrived we really felt like we were being very well looked after. A special mention to Siobhan who really went above and beyond to make sure we had an enjoyable, luxurious afternoon tea. She is a credit to the hotel! What a fantastic experience and a really tasty gluten free afternoon tea. We will definitely be going back. It is 100% worth the price tag of €40 per person. If you want a real treat, go to Scholars Townhouse Hotel.

Myself and my two girlfriends had the ultimate pleasure of staying in this hotel. We were in the presidential suite which gave us a giggle when we found the room. It is a small room and the bed in the bigger room was super king. All beds where very comfortable and clean. There was plenty of toiletries. The staff were excellent, attentive and professional and friendly at the same time. The food was delicious both dinner and breakfast and a very good choice on the menu. I most certainly would recommend this hotel and would hope to stay here again. Well done to everyone involved. Great great hotel. Keep up the good work.

I couldn't recommend the food at Scholars Townhouse highly enough! Excellent quality, great portions and not too expensive. The restaurant and bar are beautiful as are all the communal areas. The building was originally the living quarters for the Christian Brothers and the hotel has a well-maintained, antique feel with lots of wooden panelling and old artworks. Unfortunately the rooms are the converted monastery cells and, therefore, tiny. There's room for the bed and little else. The bed was comfortable and the room was nicely decorated. The en-suite was also tiny and ours had a lot of fitments missing (where only the scews remained). It's a great location – close to the centre of town. Ideal for the two nights we were there, but I wouldn't want to stay any longer.

We booked this hotel for a night last minute and didn't really check reviews. I was delighted to show up and find such a beautiful and unique hotel. My family and I were in the presidential suite. It's a 2 room suite, small, very clean and the beds are so comfortable. If you like modern and mimimalistic this is not the hotel for you. This is old world charm with beautiful antique furniture and detail that will transport you back to another time. The staff are attentive and friendly, wine was nice. Breakfast was beautiful but not your normal buffet style. You order at the table and they bring it to you. Would have been nice to have some croissants/pastries. The juice was warm but we got some ice for it and it was fine. I would love to return for a romantic weekend.

We recently had dinner and drinks beforehand in the bar. The decor is unique and beautifully decorated. The menu was varied and thoughtful and the wine pairing was spot on. The service was amazing all evening and the food was delicious, recommendations were wonderful. Highly recommend for a special occasion or just a special evening.

The room provided (116) was, at first glance, excellent but it was so noisy at night from two refrigeration units just below the (single glazed) window that we struggled to sleep. Most dissapointed. I had expected better from a hotel that brands itself as 'luxury', it certainly wasn't for us. I wish we had gone elsewhere.
