Ever since the RTE documentary on the building of the Lyrath I have wanted to visit the hotel. This year with staycations being the best holiday choice we travelled from Co. Down to visit for three nights. We had 6 in our party including a demanding 6 year old and we all loved our time in the hotel. It’s obvious they have put a lot of thought and planning into opening in the COVID 19 era. We found the hotel public areas, bedrooms and swimming pool area to be spotlessly clean every day and all staff wearing appropriate ppe.

Food and Beverage was first class, we enjoyed the daily breakfast buffet with friendly staff who supplied our every need, we only had dinner one night which we now regret as our meal in the Yew was exceptional, it was a dining experience and great value as it was included in our package.

If you are travelling with a child take time to find the kids park on site and the screening room/cinema.

A special word of praise to Jo Jo who looks after breakfast and must walk 100 miles a day in the ballroom and to Nathan the restaurant manager who led from the front and never stopped encouraging staff and engaging with customers. As a past hotelier the highlight of my stay was meeting the owner Xavier McCauliffe in the hotel, an inspiring gentleman!

Stayed the 26/8/20 to 28/8/20.
On first arrival the drive up to the hotel is outstanding and the grounds are kept immaculate, which we later walked around! The walk from the car to the entrance of the hotel is beautiful. Checking in was quick and simple and the staff at the front desk were pleasant and professional during all of our encounters!

We stayed in the Clare Suite and we were blown away. The notice before opening the door that our roomed was cleaned and sanitised was reassuring during the current climate and little touches such as the remotes in bags and stickers on high touch areas in the bathrooms were appreciated!

We visited the Spa and hydropool (would definitely recommend). Sharon was one of the ladies looking after us for our massages but all staff members were welcoming and professional! The spa is beautifully decorated and provides a calm relaxing atmosphere.

We attended the Grill & Bar for dinner on our first night the seating is well spaced out and we were sat in a booth. We were greeted by the host (didn't catch his name but he had blonde curly hair) who is perfect for the hotel as his attitude and over all energy was brilliant! Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. We ordered starters mains and deserts and all of the food was excellently prepared and presented. For the overall experience and quality of food the value was exceptional.

We drank both nights in the lobby area which was a relaxing experience enhanced by the music selection! All the staff were friendly and attentive.

Breakfast was laid out perfectly and a great adaptation to comply with the current regulations. The choice between table service and buffet selection was very good. We never felt rushed to be out of table by a certain time and the male chef at the buffet counter was very friendly! The hostess who showed us to our table was super friendly (lady with brown hair) and explained the process perfectly! The quality of food and choice was brilliant.

On our last day we decided to book in for afternoon tea. We checked out and again this process was quick and easy and the female staff member was very polite. The afternoon tea was beautifully presented and the food was so fresh and delicious!

Overall we had an excellent stay and will definitely return and as an extra plus we got to meet the 3 golden retrievers!!

We spent two nights in the hotel last week and feel the 5 star feeling just is not there compared to other hotels we have stayed in. We checked in and went to our room which was 147 beside the leisure centre. The room was spotless but there was a spare single bed which I would have preferred just a double room and utilised the space better. The breakfast was very good with well spaced out tables but I still feel for a 5star it should be table service instead of buffet style. We booked in for a swim the second evening at 6pm, there were 19 people in the pool with little room left to enjoy some personal space after the Olympic competitors stopped splashing up and down the length and breath of the pool. 3 more girls cake into the pool and we left after 12 mins as it wasn’t enjoyable and felt a little panicked with the closeness of people in a 17m pool. The bar area.... you are told to sit and they’ll take your order but they are very very slow in doing this. The service is fantastic but they have not the correct amount of bar staff to facilitate the amount of guest dispersed throughout the foyer, the bar and beyond. We sat at 10:20 after returning from dinner in the town and waiting 25 mins to be asked if we would like a drink, after approaching the bar, then a further 45 mins before anyone came near us again. At 12 the light goes on and there is no last call warning and in turn a lot of guests were complaining. All in all a huge hotel and in this size I feel it is very hard to have a 5 star standard but it makes for a good 4star compared to others.

We came here to celebrate my partners 50th birthday and whist on arrival everything certainly looked the part from the sweeping drive to incredible lobby , some areas of service are certainly lacking we discovered.
We had booked an executive room for our 2 night stay and whilst incredibly spacious , the view was of some of the grounds and a dirt track at the back of the pool area , windows were dirty , nothing spectacular.

We bumped into people we knew from home on arrival , at 3.45 pm their room was being cleaned so with this in mind on our first morning I mentioned to the house keeping staff at 11am we were heading out if they wanted to clean the room and they noted the number We came back after lunch and it hadn’t been done so went off for a walk and used the bikes , back at 3pm and still not cleaned. We were conscious we had dinner plans in Kilkenny that evening and the hotel had organised a taxi for us at 5.30 so I had to call reception twice to say our room hadn’t been cleaned and we needed towels , I finally found a member of house keeping in the corridor who brought us towels and the room was then serviced whilst we were out. It was just the hassle of feeling you were hounding people to get things done I don’t feel was appropriate for a so called 5 star hotel

Food in the Grill bar was mediocre and over priced , wouldn’t have minded if the food was amazing but the bread on my partners starter was dry and we both went for the fish parcels for mains but they were overpowered by vinegar. 2 starters , 2 mains and a bottle of SB came to €130. Breakfast was ok but pretty basic.

Trying to get a drink in the lobby on the first night was next to impossible so much so we didn’t attempt on the second night , the poor staff seemed over stretched , we managed to get one cocktail , asked for another which didn’t come and so we asked again , order was taken and 20 minutes later we gave up , I spoke to reception where a manager was standing , who asked for our room number , apologised but that was that. Similar in Tubbers bar for a drink out side , no one seemed to notice us and I had to go and ask after sitting 10 minutes.

I hate sounding like I’m being picky , this is an incredibly beautiful hotel , the decor is amazing and social distancing was adhered to and staff wore masks but it’s not cheap and I would have expected a little more for the price. We won’t return though.

Had the pleasure of staying just 1 night here with my husband and son. Before we even arrived I was impressed with how friendly and helpful the lovely girl on reception was who took our reservation and to say on arrival it even exceeded our expectations. Arrived early (12pm) and even though it was busy with check outs we were checked into our room within 5 mins. Lovely rooms, nicest shower in a long time and comfy beds. Only one small thing we found an issue, if you could even call it that was the fact that we were checked into a triple room. (Double and single bed) but there was only two of everything in the room. Robes, cups, towels ect… we ate in Tuppers Bar, food was good, we were sorry we didn’t try the grill as it looked fabulous, but have to mention it is pricey but you do pay for the environment. We had lunch out on the terrace when we arrived, was just ok, a little let down by my “superfood salad” as it literally consisted of a bowl of mixed leaves, 4 small slices of chicken and about 3 cubes of avacado yet was €18. I tried the Spa, hot stone massage, was also good. Felt safe and clean. Breakfast next morning was ok. Lot of new staff so had to ask 3 times for our tea and coffee, just felt a little manic and unorganised but we put it down to new staff as was only first week of reopening however still feel should been more organised when paying such high prices. Check out was as smooth as check in, friendly efficient and quick. Overall a really nice hotel and would go back in a heartbeat … after a few months filling the piggy bank.

We stayed at the Lyrath for 2 nights and booked the patio room. We were blessed with the weather and made good use of the patio area.

The room was air conditioned and immaculately clean, even upon entering the room, you could smell the cleaning detergents (not too strong) but it reassured me that the room was cleaned well, being a little COVID-19 conscious. There was also little antibacterial wipes left in our room which was a nice touch.
I also really liked how the hotel had QR code tiles on most tables (around the hotel and in your room) where you could check-in for contact tracing and also view the drinks menu/guest information. Only downfall was that no table we sat on had sanitiser (luckily, I had my own).

We ate in the Grill restaurant and Tuppers bar, the food was delicious but a bit over priced for what we got. We were a bit let down by our experience in Tuppers bar. we were told we could only get a 6.15pm booking (booked at 4.30pm the same day), so we took it being afraid we wouldn't be able to get anywhere else. We got down to the bar at 6.15pm and we asked for a table outside and were told it was very hot outside, so we agreed to sit in the conservatory, in extreme heat, which was very uncomfortable! Since we sat down, no other bookings came in after us, which was disapoining because we were told 6/6.15pm was the only availability. Food was lovely, but the staff came across inexperienced and passed our table multiple times when we were waiting to order/clear our table. Cocktails were delicious, but you'll be waiting a while to get it.
Breakfast was very also very tasty .

The hotel itself was around 10 minute drive (if even) to Kilkenny city, so if you want a little city + relaxing break away, Lyrath would be the perfect choice.

Stayed here with my parents and we had mixed feelings about this hotel. Positives are that the grounds are great for walking, the staff are friendly, the lobby is spacious, a nice atmosphere. Negatives was that whilst the staff were friendly the service was very hit and miss and unfortunately most of the time just too slow, the food at Yew Tree and the bistro is just OK and not great, breakfast was not relaxing and nothing special. Location is only 5 mins from Kilkenny Town but unable to walk to the town so reliant on a car / taxi for this. The swimming pool is tiny and was not very covid compliant.I would probably come back but would eat dinner outside of the hotel and stay a shorter period of time. Small simple things would improve this hotel such as improved service and clean bedroom and swimming pool windows!

We stayed as a family in 4 rooms for 2 nights after Christmas. Lovely atmosphere in the hotel, good facilities for kids (12 and 9). I wouldn’t rate it 5 stars though as the pool needs maintenance where tiles have lifted off the floor and there is a scum around the edge of the pool where the water sits. The food in the Grill was excellent and the Yew restaurant was ok but less atmospheric as the 9 of us seemed to be put down the back on our own. Also they ran out of Turbot which seemed bizarre as we were there at 7pm and it was something we were all looking forward to. They ran out of the wine we had on the first night too and when choosing a second bottle, that was also gone.
The service was good, but quite slow in the Yew restaurant and the waiters couldn’t pour wine properly - spilled drops on the table and filled the wine glasses, forcing us to get another bottle - definitely not a 5 star service.
Rooms were well equipped, however the family room didn’t have a coffee machine but the other rooms did so that was disappointing. The shower, bath and beds were all good though.
The grounds are lovely for a walk but there is no proper path so bring good walking shoes if it’s mucky.
If you have a family and you aren’t at one of the numerous weddings, make sure to ask for a room at the end of a corridor as we were beside a lift and the noise was terrible between 1am and 4am with people returning to their rooms shouting.
We have an electric car and when we arrived the charger wasn’t working but the manager gave us his full attention and got it sorted for us immediately which eased our stress. I felt having spent so much money on 4 rooms and 9 people, they should have given my 9 years old daughter one of the little golden retriever teddies upon checkout when she asked about the price, would have been a nice touch.
This was our 3rd stay here and we had a lovely time whhh family but some things let the hotel down especially the fact I couldn’t sleep with the noise. We will still return as the children love it and it’s not too far from Dublin but I would like to see some things improve.

This review is based on the fact that we paid almost €400 for a one night stay with dinner and breakfast. The food was passable (but definitely not worth what we paid), the room was fine and there was nothing outstandingly terrible (e.g. headbutt from a waiter/ pube in the food sort of level) - if anything that would have been more understandable. In fact, had this been a €50 night at a Holiday inn with dinner at Nando's, I'd have wouldn't have been too non-plussed. The issue was that in almost every area of customer service, they were just a bit crap. Definitely no where near the level I've had at other 5 star hotels... or even bog standard restaurants for that matter.

Some examples... When we arrived, we asked about going for lunch and were plonked in an airport lounge style hall while a lady came out and called out numbers every few minutes, Maccers style. After 30 mins of this, we cut our losses and went to the town for lunch. I understand that sometimes restaurants are full, but there is no shame in telling people this so they can go elsewhere or, if you are going to make them wait, put them in the bar with a drink or two. At dinner, they brought us a drinks menu at the bar before dinner but never returned to take our order, there was a 10 minute queue to get seated, they didn't bring water for 40 mins when we sat down (even though we asked a few times), our table was right at the entrance but they wouldn't let us have a different empty table (that stayed empty all night), they tried to take our food away before we'd finished and after dinner, they gave us the cocktail menu but never returned to take our order again. In the end we had to go to the desk to pay as no waiter came round. Furthermore, the place was full of young children. Not really the management's fault but good to know if you're thinking of going as a couple. At breakfast, they wouldn't let us choose which of the empty tables we sat in (again) and the gluten free and normal options at the buffet were poorly marked and often mixed up (my girlfriend is gluten intolerant - medical not fashion). Furthermore, it transpired that there was a menu you could order off but we were never given it and when we asked about it the waiter told us that he'd have to go downstairs to get it (in a way that suggested our request was particularly inconvenient for him). When he finally brought it, noone returned to take our order so we had to make do with the slightly sad looking buffet.

To top it off, we mentioned our concerns as we left and the manager said he'd give us a discount in a future stay to show us that our experience was a one off (not that we'd take it up but I suppose it's a nice gesture). Later on he emailed my girlfriend offering a small discount because we weren't satisfied with breakfast, and used the WRONG NAME (capitalisation used to highlight outrage).

Overall, any one of the issues would have been fine but the sheer number of them was just disappointing, particularly as in the past this has supposedly been one of the top hotels in the country. If anyone reading this is thinking of booking a luxury stay, especially as a couple, I would consider other options.

We , a family of 2 adults + 4 children aged 8, 10, 12 & 14 recently enjoyed a 2 night stay in this beautiful hotel. From the moment we checked in to our departure it was a real switch off the outside world, everything we needed was on site. It was obvious that Covid protocols were being adhered to and we felt safe there. We had booked 3 visits to the swimming pool prior to arrival and enjoyed all 3 visits , clean, quiet and relaxing. We had also pre-booked our breakfast. The parents really enjoyed the table service at breakfast, not having to worry about children carrying overflowing glasses, bowls and plates made them very relaxing meals compared to the old buffet breakfast days, and we didn’t feel we were missing out on anything, we certainly didn’t leave hungry either morning. We ate in the Grill Bar on our first night, lovely food, the burgers on the kids menu were really good. There was a lively vibe about the restaurant and it was our favourite of the 2 that we had dinner in.
On our second night we ate in Tupper’s Bar. The kids menu was the same as the previous night but this wasn’t an issue with ours as they were so impressed with the burgers from the night before. Again, no complaints about the food here and I felt the prices in both were reasonable for what we had. While the hotel is on the edge of a bustling city once you go through the gates you are out in the country. We got plenty of fresh air when we made use of the hotel’s bikes to explore the grounds and later we enjoyed a lovely walk admiring the beauty around us . We ended the day by watching a movie in the cinema which was the perfect way to finish off a very relaxing weekend. We looking forward to returning to Lyrath again to relax and recharge in a beautiful and tranquil hotel.

Once you check in you are asked what time you would like breakfast lunch dinner. Our room wasn't ready when we arrived so we went straight to tuppers bar for a bite to eat. The tables were spaced apart, no screens and staff wore face coverings and continually cleaned the tables. It all felt very safe and clean and same goes for dinner in the grill bar. Staff were very friendly and worked hard. Our room was fine no complaints. We really enjoyed are stay.
