Butler House, Luxury Guesthouse - formally the Dower House of Kilkenny Castle built in 1770. This historical house is situated in the centre of Kilkenny City, adjacent to Kilkenny Castle. An integral part of the Kilkenny Castle Estate, Butler House was home to the Earls of Ormonde, who also built the castle, stables and coach houses at the rear. Sweeping staircases, magnificent plastered ceilings and marble fireplaces are all features of this 18th century house. The house is a combination of contemporary furnishings and period elegance. Butler House boasts seventeen special rooms and suites, all with their own individual character. Designed to provide maximum comfort, each has a modern bathroom, and is decorated with soft coordinated fabrics and furnishings. The balance of old and new is prevalent throughout the rooms – contemporary furnishings are combined with the magnificent original features, which afford guests an impressive sense of comfort and space.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We only stayed here for one night, but wish it could have been longer. Hotel is well located in Kilkenny, walkable to all major sites in town. Kilkenny itself has a lot see, and is a good jumping off spot for other sites, like Cashel and Wicklow National Park. The room was large and comfortable, and breakfast was great. Hotel does a really good job of maintaining historic details of the house, so that you feel like you’re staying in an old manor, but still has all the modern amenities you expect from a hotel. The garden is a beautiful place for a stroll or a cocktail, great amenity. Staff is friendly and helpful. Highly recommend!

I can not say enough about the staff here. They allowed us to park in the hotel parking before we checked in and they answered many of the questions that we had about the area. Location, location, location! Beautiful large room with window seats and a separate entryway. Plenty of breakfast options which were served in a room with beautiful views of the grounds.

We only stayed one night, but wish we could have stayed more. Service was wonderful, and our room overlooking the Gardens was spacious and comfortable. You can walk through the gardens right to Kilkenny Castle. Would highly recommend the Butler House.

Was really looking forward to visiting Butler House (love Kilkenny!). From the moment we arrive we were welcomed by the lovely friendly lady at reception. The room was spacious, comfortable, clean and relaxing - a rare find in many modern hotels. The decor is fresh and calming - very much in keeping with its surrounds. Shower was powerful and everywhere was spotless. After a relaxing and peaceful nights sleep breakfast was served downstairs - service was great and breakfast was really good! Nothing was complicated - well done to everyone at Butler House. Definitely recommend if you are in Kilkenny

My husband and I absolutely LOVED this hotel. It was the best place we stayed in Ireland. First the staff were just fantastic. The front desk staff were so helpful answering all of our questions. The wait staff in the restaurant were delightful. The location is just perfect. You are right in Kilkenny. You can walk everywhere in town from that location. The room we had was so spacious and quiet. Everything was clean and functioned perfectly. There is parking right onsite which is a plus. Also the breakfast we had there was one of our favorite meals of our trip. So delicious!

What a find!!! Very centrally located - right by the castle. Staff is so friendly and helpful and has the most delicious cooked to order breakfast daily. Our room was large, bed was comfy, they gave us extra pillows and the bathroom had a tub/shower. A must stay!!!

Stayed in the Butler house on a Mid-Week Trip and I must sing their praises! Not only is the house and it's rooms absolutely stunning the staff were Amazing and attentive. Fabulous experience, we added the Dinner package they offer at Ristorante Riuccini which was also an amazing treat well worth the price! Cant recommend this place enough, 3 minute walk to the High street also.

What a beautiful place to stay. So clean, historical decor, hospitable staff, comfortable rooms and a gorgeous garden. Beds were very comfortable. That's unfortunate maybe go see if they have what happened. Bar on site for residents. This exceeded our expectations!

Unfortunately the room we had was awful (room 83). It had a very musty smell and windows were completely dripping with condensation. The bathroom was very old and tired looking, with mould in and around the grout. All of that aside, pipes were banging and clanging all night, every 5 minutes. It started around 11 and stopped around 7am, just in time for morning deliveries on the street which were equally loud. I had earplugs and a pillow over my head and didnt sleep a wink, neither did my partner. We told reception in the morning and we were told they had never had a complaint like that before. We were supposed to stay for 2 nights (at a total cost of 360 euro) and we decided to leave after the first night, reception asked if we were sure we didnt want to "risk it" and stay another night. Pay 360 for sleep deprivation torture? I don't think so. Looked up reviews after we left (our mistake) and plenty of people mentioned banging pipes all night so the hotel sre definitely aware of the problem. I understand it is an old building, but the hotel should be upfront about these issues instead of feigning ignorance. Would not recommend this hotel to anyone.
