This property exceeded expectations with large bedrooms, large bathrooms and delicious breakfast. We took guests review recommendations and booked a garden view room (for a few euros more) and were rewarded with beautiful views over the garden to the castle, with no road noise. Definitely the place to stay in Kilkenny

A private group of us had dinner in this wonderful Georgian House in Kilkenny recently. From the moment you walk in the door you get a wow factor it’s like being in a stately home. We were seated in a private room, the room was spacious and could easily accommodate our group for dinner. It was dark so we couldn’t see the gardens from the large bay window. It was a small menu to choose from but the selection was vast fein soup to duck spring rolls to crab meat for starters. The mains had good choice, salmon for the non meat eaters or fish lovers a tasty risotto and then beef, pork or chicken. The Caesar Salad for starter was a perfect way to start a meal. I decided to have beef which came cooked medium as led menu. It was delicious and plenty on the plate. The fondant potatoes was soft and buttery. Vegetables had a bit of bite so weren’t overcooked and the beef would melt in your mouth. The dessert was a trio of mini deserts. Our servers were friendly and professional. Not too eager to clear plates so we had time to enjoy the meal over some good laughs. Overall very impressed with the experience for my first time visiting this wonderful place

Enjoyed our stay, great location and staff were so pleasant from front desk to breakfast staff. Room however was very average, bathroom got very damp from lack of ventilation which wasn't pleasant.
I do feel Covid is used as an excuse to not supply fresh towels or water in your room (unless you trek down to reception for both which we didnt feel was in keeping with a 4 star stay) anything could be left outside guests door in a laundry bag if needed.

Butler House Hotel is rated as a 4* establishment in Kilkenny City and the prices reflect the rating but not the reality (we paid circa 275 Euro per night, B&B for the room, mid-week.) The hotel is a bit soulless and the reception shown in some of the photos we saw do not reflect the reality of what we experienced. We thought we could sit by the fire in comfy chairs and have a glass of wine or cup of coffee, but it was cold and uninviting.

Full disclosure, we did not complain or say anything on the spot. We didn't want to ruin our stay by being "difficult" guests and having a discussion about the major deficiencies of the hotel when our true feeling was that there was no one available who would have been able to make a difference anyway.

The staff were exceptionally lovely but pitifully inexperienced in the class of hotel and did not offer the level of service we expected for our 275 Euro per night.

Not only were the staff lacking in training and experience but there were a number of issues with the stay.

In our room (I think it was No. 79 but not 100% sure), the room had not been properly vacuumed. There were bits of wrapper on the floor. In addition, there was bird poop on one of the net curtains (inside). The room itself is tired. The mirror in the bathroom is a weak attempt at making the room a bit updated but doesn't fit the decor or style of the hotel at all. There was no explanation in the room of why the room was named as it was (it mentioned somewhere in the paperwork that each room had an explanation).

We asked for an iron and ironing board which were delivered in a very timely manner but remained outside our room for 24 hours before being taken away.

At the afternoon tea we had booked, there was dried egg on the fork I got, and the scone was semi-raw. I brought the scone to the attention of the waitress, and she offered to replace it, but nothing else and no follow-up (lack of training?)

We sat outside (beautiful grounds and garden) and we informed the staff that the seats were wet and perhaps they might want to dry them before seating anyone else. It wasn't taken into account.

Some of the above might be seen as picky but the hotel was not value for money in any way. Any of the "picky" things above I would overlook if the hotel were priced appropriately.

Wishing them all the best and hope that they manage to make improvements and train their (really wonderful) staff to be able to meet expectations of a 4* clientele.

Was given a Bluebook voucher value of €100 and picked Butler House due to location and we’re prepared to add to the overall cost of the night. (Total €275 fit bed and breakfast only)

We were also given Afternoon Tea as a gift, which costed €70.

Hotel: The house is nice. Room was spacious, but on the lower ground floor. Room above us was a dining room and floor boards unbelievably creaky. It went on late at night and started early in the morning, people constantly walking around the room. I rang and asked could we check in at 2.30 as we were travelling and had Afternoon Tea booked for 3pm. However hotel wouldn’t facilitate.

The Afternoon Tea: was very very disappointing. What we received was not worth €70. It was a few sandwiches and a couple cakes. Coffee was slow coming and they could have done with leaving a pot of coffee on the table. We had to ask for the glass of Prosecco. It just was really disappointing and poor value for money.

I would have expected a lot more considering the cost of both the hotel and afternoon tea. Wouldn’t stay again as believe it was far too expensive for what we received.

We stayed 2 nights at the butler hotel and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. The welcome at reception was fabulous wendy gave is plenty of information and rang the restaurant we had booked for dinner to say we were running a bit late. The room was amazing I think we may have been upgraded as it was a huge room. Although particularly warm weather and bo air conditioning in the room there was a fan which was great. The breakfasts were some of the best we have had. The location is perfect to explore the beautiful town of kilkenny. In the evening we enjoyed sitting outside in the superb garden area, it was so peaceful. The health and safety and cleanliness of the hotel was first class and we felt very comfortable and safe here. Also the toiletries were great in the bathroom I would actually want to use them at home. There is free car parking at the hotel. I cant recommend the butler house enough and it was definitely our favourite place to stay during or trip in ireland. We cant wait to visit in the future

Firstly the pluses, the staff were very friendly and helpful and the gardens were stunning. Unfortunately that’s about all the positives this hotel has. Very disappointed with the room size for €162 a night, a tiny, stuffy room, the only redeeming feature being the bathroom which was a good size. Very noisy from both the road and from other guests, and when room 82 closed their bedroom door it makes the headboard rattle in room 81. Bed extremely small and uncomfortable, would expect at least a king bed not a double. Whilst we were not in the area to stay in our room and watch TV, we none the less did want to watch the news. The TV is so tiny and old fashioned like a TV from the 90’s, surely an upgrade would be sensible. Finally breakfast was not good. The coffee was so weak you could see the bottom of the cup. It tasted like hot water with a hint of coffee. We sent it back and received americanos instead. The hot food was just ok, very salty and not particularly hot. I’m afraid we would not recommend this hotel.

Gifted a voucher so had lunch for 2. Beautifully set tables with linen etc at window and these were booked. Sat at table with no linen table cloth etc. Would have liked the 5 star table setting. Why the difference in table setting, tables pre booked for afternoon tea which I felt there was a strong emphasis on looked great. I had starter betroot tartlet and goats cheese. Lovely and big serving. Main avocado toast, give me a saw and then I'd cut through bread, horrible wilted salad on top and yes I know sourdough is crusty!!! Duck spring rolls lovely, curry hot and tasty. Service good. Staff very friendly. Lovely setting.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us a review, and your feedback Helen. In relation to the table setting, we do opt for a more casual look and feel for our lunch sitting. In the past, all tables would be set with linen, but upon undertaking some research, we found that, for the most part our guests were looking for a more casual feel for daytime dining. With that being said, we absolutely agree, the 5* setting does create a very special and unique experience, and we do try to find a balance to differentiate our various products and experiences. Thank you again for taking the time to leave your valuable feedback - we have passed your comments on to the Management Team, and also our Kitchen Team. We hope to welcome you back to the House / Restaurant again soon. The Guest Relations Team at Butler House

Stayed here for a night with my boyfriend. We had a suite and the room was really big with lots of space and nice decor. The bed was very comfortable and we had a nice view over the garden. Breakfast the next morning was delicious and the service was great. Our stay cost €299 for a night B&B which I feel is a bit expensive for this hotel. We would’ve liked a few extra amenities in the room such as an iron and a mini fridge, for a room at this price. There was also a bag of rubbish at the door of our hotel room from time we checked in until we departed the next morning. When we went to the bar in the hotel to get a drink, we had to ask at the reception to get someone to go behind the bar to serve the drink and had to wait 10 minutes for the staff member to make the two Gin & tonics as there was no ice, lemons or a knife to cut the lemon at the bar!
Overall we enjoyed our stay but think there are small improvements that could be made to justify the price being charged for a stay in this hotel.

The castle view room was extraordinary with a curved bay window with seating. The large king bed was extremely comfortable with a duvet cover. There was still and sparkling water provided each day. The bathroom had a large tub with shower and a very handy shelf for bath products. Of great use was the elevator and parking was secure and free. Only downside for us was breakfast, the flavours were not too our taste and the meats were very salty. The pleasant staff made up for any shortcoming. The location was perfect, the street was quiet and there were no bright lights shining in the room
