The River Court is a popular hotel situated on a bank of the River Nore, overlooked by the impressive Kilkenny Castle on the other bank. I stayed there with family for nearly a week.

As the hospitality industry tries to emerge from the Covid lockdown, I will give a pass to the service issues experienced (delays, wrong orders delivered) and staffing problems observed (staff contradicting one another). To be fair, most of the staff are clearly trying their best and it's a stressful time for the industry.

The front of the hotel is not very impressive and the car park landscaping and lighting near the main door should be improved. There is rotten wood visible on the fascias over the main entrance and in some of the surrounding window panels. Last time I visited some years ago, it seemed more well kept and appealing out front.

Some other reviewers complained about the narrow arched entrance and exit through the now derelict historic Bridge House, but i had no issue with this and understand it's a listed building that will be restored by the new owners in time (Nevilles - same company that owns the River Court).

The letdowns for us were in how the rooms we stayed in were marketed as 'Deluxe' Castle View. They had the castle view, but deluxe they certainly weren't. Definitely not worth paying extra for. They're no bigger than Classic Rooms and have the same decor. Bathrooms are a bit tired in this part of the hotel too and are small by modern hotel standards. Nespresso machines and bathrobes/slippers notwithstanding, if you want to see the castle just go out on the terrace and don't pay extra for these rooms.

On the plus side, the beds are comfortable and the food was good. Location is only 5 - 10 mins walk to nearly every attraction/shop in the city (several other hotels are very centrally located also).

Areas they could improve: deep clean or replace the carpets in some of the bedrooms (based on my being in 3 rooms with stained carpets that smelled a bit er, stale!)

Repaint woodwork and the chipped painted bedroom furniture. Fix the balcony doors. Install an extra socket or two per bedroom if possible. Upgrade the bathrooms or at least refinish the surfaces of the baths & basins.

It's a well located hotel in an area popular with tourists and revellers alike, so i guess it's hard to keep everything top notch in a heavily trafficked hotel. Some of the other large hotels in Kilkenny have the same issues.

One last small suggestion: please try and enforce your no smoking policy in the rooms. On two separate nights I got strong smell of cigarettes on the corridor and there were dozens of butts visible on the flat roof below my balcony. I'm sure it isn't easy for management especially when guests smoke out the windows/balcony doors, but as the smoke was getting onto the corridors, some guests must have been doing it in their rooms.

Overall rating of stay: a decent 3 star, with room for improvement.

Dear tomc_irl3, Thank you for taking the time to complete a review and share your thoughts with us. We value all feedback as it allows us to maintain our high standards and continue to improve into the future. I would like to apologise for any delays you experienced with service and appreciate the fact that you understand that this is a stressful time for our industry, some of our waiting staff are new and are receiving on the job training whilst others don't normally work in the food & beverage outlets so may not be as experience or knowledgeable in this area. Our deluxe rooms have the views of the castle, robes and slippers, Nespresso coffee machine, complimentary water and this is why they are more expensive. I am glad to know that overall you enjoyed your time with us and we look forward to welcoming you back. Kind regards Catherine McKnight General Manager CMcKnight@rivercourthotel.com

Checked into hotel late Friday evening , met with couple in front of us complaining to receptionist about standard of their room . Kind of set alarm bells off with us while waiting to check in but gave the Hotel a chance as maybe it was a one off. Have to agree with that couple , after check in kind of took the fun out of our stay.Found room quality room 122 for a four star hotel to be poor to be honest and a bit of a letdown but said we'd grin and bear it as we had paid in full when checking in .Plus it was late evening when we checked in so would have been late in the day to move to another hotel . Found room to be very warm and with no A/C which i thought would have been in the room being a four star hotel .Had to make do with a fan which had little impact on the heat . Not blaming the Hotel for the humid weather. Had to change rooms as ceiling in the bathroom was leaking water from the room above us which was closed off due to a leak , in fairness to the Manager she got us moved to another room that was also offered to the couple that were complaining at reception when checking in. Room 212 was a better room but again the heat and lack of A/C was a let down . No safe in the room also .On a positive note the staff ,food and service was very good . Restaurant , Terrace and Bar were nice and service you could not fault . Centrally located and good car parking facilities . For the price charged for two nights B&B and evening meal did not reflect the standard of a four star hotel.

Had a great stay at the Rivercourt. The hotel was very clean and covid restrictions were all in place. There was plenty of sanitiser located around the hotel and staff wore masks. The Staff here were lovely and very social special thanks to Debbie, Chloe, Sean and Graham who made our stay even more enjoyable. Will definitely be back.

Stayed in room 217 which is a deluxe castle view room with a balcony. The rooms have no air con and in the hunid heat wave this week it was torture.. and fixtures and fittings literally falling apart.bathrooms are small, ugly, in need of basic repair and no extracter fan with poor shower.
Having spent 2 nights in Cork and 2 nights in kerry the same week.. In 4 star hotels this by comparison was a real shock to the system and unfortunately put a bad end to our 5 day staycation in Ireland. There was little to no apology from the duty manger who showed us another room 212 which was actually bigger (a deluxe double so actually cheaper than our room) , but we would be loosing the balcony.. So we stuck with our original room. She just wanted to know would we take this new room or not but never offered to come In to our room to see what our problem was, my guess is she knew full well and was tired of relentless complaints similar to ours, she just disappeared once we chose to stay put. Granted she got us a fan but this had already been promised by the receptionist who by the way could not have been nicer and more apologetic.. Its important to point out here this room 212 was also very rough around the edges with paint worn off the walls around the bed. Why has this hotel not been given a lick of paint at least? It's unfortunate the opportunity to re paint was not taken during lockdown to freshen it up. The bathrooms need complete gutting out but I appreciate its very costly and hopefully they plan on doing this in the future but no excuse to not freshen rooms up with paint. No offer of compensation.. Even a small gesture of a free drink or anything at all..€205 for the night..a rip off.
Staff in restaurant are all very nice and polite and breakfast was good with very attentive staff there also. Views of castle are very nice both from room and from terrace and breakfast room. Upon checking out (very polite French lady who we also checked in with) we were unfortunately not asked the standard questions of whether we enjoyed our stay or not .. Which would have given us another opportunity to discuss the issues we had. She was very pleasent though but we most definitely will not be staying here again.

We were fully aware of the difficult times we are all in and the impact this is having on tourism in Ireland plus factoring in the safety of staff and customers but we like many others were encouraged to “stay-cation” so we opted for a short 3 night break in Kilkenny along with another couple.
I want to start with the positives from our stay, The hotel is smack bang in the middle of the town, The Breakfast and the breakfast dining area were lovely and the majority of the young staff were very nice and helpful, but that is about the best that I can say regarding the quality of service for the 3 days we were there.
The Covid situation does not excuse the fact that we were paying hotel guests and some of the abrupt, bad service, at times being ignored by some of the staff were really beyond a joke so maybe some refresher customer service training could be rolled out.
On our first day as the weather was nice so after we checked in we went into the restaurant and asked could we sit outside and were told a blunt “no” as there were people wating on tables, I then asked were these people hotel guests or passing trade and the girl ignored me and walked off, it seems that non-residents business is preferred in this area, another waitress came over and said we had to order food if we wanted to sit there, we ordered food and drinks and as soon as our food was finished the bill was dropped on the table leaving us dismayed and really not feeling welcomed which then made up our minds to eat outside of the hotel which was not our plan when booking.
We went and did a tour of the town and when we eventually returned we decided to have a night-cap at the bar, 10:45pm and the bar was unmanned so we asked one of the waitress staff if we could get a drink as we were guests and were told very abruptly no as they were closed… This was noted for all 3 days of our stay.
The room was basic and dated to be honest, we had no A/C or fridge, and on day 2 there was a bag with clean towels left outside the door, having stayed in 4 star hotels throughout Ireland and abroad this by comparison lets the side down, I hope this is not too negative and perhaps I was one of the unlucky ones.

Dear alankQ50350S, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I was naturally disappointed and surprised to read your comments on our service as that the vast majority of reviewers on this site are very complimentary of our staff and service and whilst I acknowledge that this was not your experience, it is important to give a balanced view of the overall feedback. We do clearly state in our welcome letter that our rooms are only serviced on request during these strange times and therefore, for your convenience we have prepacked all room amenities and have them ready to hang on your bedroom door should you require more towels etc and I must say that we have been complimented on many occasions for this service. We value all feedback here at the Kilkenny River Court hotel as it is your comments that help us to improve and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to show that this would not be the norm for us. Myself and my wife held our wedding reception and afters party here in August 2021, and the service provided by the hotel was excellent. The entire team were so helpful with making sure every little detail was just perfect for the big day.

I'd like to make special shoutouts to Iona, Bruno, Leticia & Jose, who all went above and beyond to ensure that it was an event we will remember for the rest of our lives.

We all know how hard the hospitality industry has been hit with the COVID restrictions of the last 18 months, and the hotel went above and beyond with accommodating our every request even with our reduced headcount for the reception.

The reception rooms are spacious, but the team accommodated our requests to have extra couches and coffee tables brought in so that the room didn't feel empty with a 50-person wedding, and people had a more casual space to sit and talk after the dinner.

For the Afters party they closed off the room partition to make a smaller safer space for the kids to run around in.

The food was excellent, and our guests raved all night about how amazing the food was!

The rooms are a great size, the three rooms we stayed in (a double room, the Bridal Suite and the Suite above the Bridal Suite) were all of the highest levels of cleanliness.

We're both looking forward to revisiting the River Court in the future on our anniversaries.

Thank you to the events team and all of the staff in the Rivercourt Hotel for looking after us on our wedding day on 4th September. Everything went without a hitch and we were really lucky to have an outdoor civil ceremony in such a beautiful location by the river. Natalia and her team made sure everyone was happy and well fed on the day. All of the food served from the drinks reception to dinner and evening hot food was delicious and our guests were complimentary of both the food and friendly hotel staff. Our bridal suite with views overlooking the river was stunning and having breakfast on the balcony was a real treat! I'd highly recommend the Rivercourt to any couple looking for a picture perfect location, delicious food and fabulous staff.

Beautiful breakfast, great location, room lovely but I have never slept in a more uncomfortable bed. We had a twin room for two nights. First night the pillows were like cement blocks, the two beds were so uncomfortable we did not sleep we brought this to reception staff but was told the manager would speak to us. She did not speak to us there were no other rooms available a very nice lady who was one of the housekeeping staff went and got me one soft pillow. I thought we had found our perfect location for our stays in Kilkenny but I would not stay in this Hotel again when you can not even get a comfortable nights sleep. The manager was still not available on check out.

Stayed here for one night last weekend as a birthday treat for my partner.

I booked a castle view room and I have to say the whole experience was perfect from start to finish.

We arrived to check-in quite early and although the room understandably wasn’t ready, the receptionist rang me when the room was ready which ended up being 2 hours ahead of schedule.

The room itself surpassed my expectations. A superb view of the castle, balcony with a table and comfortable chairs, large bed, TV with a lot of channels, Nespresso machine etc.

Breakfast was extremely well managed, very quick even at peak time and the quality of the food brilliant. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.

You couldn’t ask for a better location, less than 5 minutes walk to anywhere you’ll want to go, and this hotel will certainly be my first choice for future stays in Kilkenny.

Myself and the hubby had our beautiful wedding here in the Rivercourt the staff are so friendly efficent and nothing is ever to much for them. From the first time we visited the venue to look around Karen made us both feel so welcome give us a tour of hotel the rooms go through packages for our wedding and look at possible dates .We both fell in love with the place we knew it was perfect venue for our big day and booked our date there and then. They helped so much to plan and organise our special day to the finest detail Iona and Marcella were both our fairy godmothers for months leading up to the big day they gave us such great advice and tips to use on the final details which helped the planning process to be stress free.

On the day itself it was just like a fairtale we had imagined all our guests fell in love with the venue, the organisation of the day the staff are so welcoming friendly and very attentive to all our guests. The room we had our reception was organised and decorated so well we were just shocked and overwhelmed on how much detail that went in by all the staff on the day.The service for bar and food was excellent nobody went bed thirsty or hungry😂😂....We would like to thank everyone in Rivercourt that helped out on the day to make our day such magical memory especially Natalia Pedro Stephen Dee Marcella Iona and Catherine and anyone who i may forgotten.

The Rivercourt is like a Home From Home we cant thank you all enough for give us such a magical day full of great memories that we will cherish forever.

We look forward to seeing you all very soon 😁
