The hotel is located right across the river from the Kilkenny Castle. Great location. The triple room was nice, but nothing special. The corridors were very drab, and had very cheap decor. There is complimentary parking for guests, but limited. Breakfast was nothing special. Served buffet style. I didn't find the breakfast servers to be very friendly.

This is such a lovely hotel from every aspect. I loved the decor, the staff (especially the kind manager(ess)), the room, the location, and they even provide free parking! The room was lovely with a great shower. I couldn't stop admiring the beautiful staircase everytime I used the lift, with its chanderlier and lovely decor. There even was a little lounge on the floor. Breakfast was in such a beautiful room with a view to the castle and so much greenery. The fare itself was lovely and of terrific quality. I had the most delicious Pink Lady apples there. Apart from Kilkenny's beautiful sights which are so accessible on foot from the hotel, we explored behind the hotel. Absolutely gorgeous. Fantastic hotel in a superb city. I would so love to go back.

Hotel is nicely located in Kilkenny - I did request if there was a room we may be able to switch to, facing the river, but sadly the lady on the desk wouldn’t look into it. Said they were full. We were given a disabled access room, on the first floor - and had two bathrooms, The bed was comfortable but the view was awful, onto the flat roof of the entrance lobby. I closed the curtains as soon as we entered the room as it was cold, with single pane glass, The disabled bathroom just reminded me of a hospital. And had a really old smell. Luckily there was another bathroom as it was pretty grim. Breakfast was a very busy experience. Lots and lots of people. A buffet breakfast with lots of options but nothing could be replenished quickly enough. Not enough plates, bowls, lots of greedy people not waiting in a queue but really they needed more wait staff.

Response from Anthony Smith, General Manager at Kilkenny River Court Hotel
Responded 1 week ago
Hi There, Many thanks for your review of your recent stay. Unfortunately all our rooms cannot have river or castle views. These deluxe rooms are an option to book on our website but were fully booked the night of your stay. The accessible bathrooms are specifically designed for peoples needs and therefore we do have a standard bathroom in these rooms too so the room is multi purpose. Surprised at the breakfast comments as our breakfast receives excellent comments - it may have been at a peak time where on our traffic light system we do advise of delays at both buffets at certain times. Our location is so close to everything Kilkenny has to offer. We look forward to a return visit to Kilkenny in the near future or indeed in one of our sister hotels, the Tower Hotel, Waterford, Royal Marine, Dublin or Druids Glen, Wicklow. We booked a Special Occasion 2-Night Breakaway in a Deluxe Castle View Room. Included was 2 nights B&B , One Dinner with a glass each of Prosecco & late check out. The room was very clean, compact & had a lovely castle / river view. Buffet Breakfast each morning had a good selection & was tasty. We had dinner both nights , food was delicious, good overall service though no Prosecco offered nor served as per package. Both Household & Restaurant Staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall we were happy with our stay , a few items need to be sharpened up. Front desk staff were unfortunately curt & their main emphasis placed on financial transactions despite us paying in full on check in & paying any further items at transaction. We needed to go back and book dinner etc. Regarding late check out there seemed to be poor communication between front end staff & household staff as we were asked why we had not vacated our room at 12:20 when we were booked until 2pm. We were unaware that an exit carpark ticket was required until we approached the barrier. There was no reference to this on our booking confirmation email. Also the Front desk staff despite asking if we had a car parked failed to give us an exit ticket. They immediately proceeded to focus on us not incurring any additional charges on our card. We had paid everything as we went. These are just small items that can be easily rectified but cause unnecessary unpleasantness. We knocked off a star rating as a result. It is very easy to let staff know what guests are checking out later & carpark ticket should be given on check out as we had submitted our car reg details when we arrived. When I returned to the front desk to get a Lyn exit ticket there was no way apology offered for the inconvenience. Information regarding carpark exit ticket should be included in the booking confirmation email. Despite these blips , overall we were happy with our stay. The hotel is centrally located. We look forward to a return visit.

Hi Rhona, Many thanks for your review of your recent stay with us here in the Kilkenny River Court Hotel. I appreciate your comments on the stay overall. I have reviewed the information in relation to the car park and the issuing of the complimentary exit tickets and apologies over the mix up with Housekeeping not being alerted to your late checkout. I'm delighted you are planning a return visit and rest assured those 2 glasses of bubbly will appear on your next visit! Kind Regards, Anthony Smith General Manager

We recently spent three nights in this hotel. It's situated by the river opposite the castle in a beautiful setting. We got a great midweek deal of 405 for B and B plus three dinners. We were delighted when we approached the hotel that it was in such an idyllic setting. Jade, the receptionist was very friendly and helpful. We were delighted with our lovely room with stunning views of Kilkenny Castle. I had written ahead to the Manager, informing him that we were vegan. He responded to me very swiftly and copied in reception and the head chef, so we felt very assured that we would be well looked after. On our first night, we went to the restaurant and again informed the waiter that we were vegan. He appeared to have no prior knowledge of same. We were expecting a vegan menu, like most good establishments in 2023 provide, or at least vegan options clearly outlined on the regular menu. This was not to be the case. He informed us that we could have the pea risotto without cheese. There was no possibility of any choice of dishes. As 3 courses were provided with the deal, we enquired regarding the starter and main course. He had to go off and check. He returned saying we could have a goats cheese salad that wasn't made from an animal?!! Not trusting this option, we enquired about the soup. He said we could have soup without bread. We said we wanted bread and he went off again and returned with the option of a bread roll, but there woulf be a 15 minute wait! By this stage, we were exhausted and made to feel we were a considerable inconvenience. The soup was fabulous. The risotto was sticky dry rice with peas, totally bland and tasteless, without the normal moist consistency. Our fruit salad was fresh and nice. The next morning at breakfast, the lovely blonde front of house lady introduced us to our very pleasant server Gloria. We had vegan sausages, beans and mushrooms, which were lovely. The next two nights in the restaurant we were given a vegan menu. The soup and desserts were lovely but the main courses were dreadfully unimaginative and bland. The second night we had a celeriac dish with mash, which arrived barely warm and a plain tagliatelle with cauliflower. On the last night our chickpea curry was equally boring. The only saving grace to the mains on the 3 nights was the extra veg. On the last day in the restaurant, we unfortunately didn't catch Gloria. A Stony faced waitress took our order and told us we could get beans at the buffet. I informed her that we had had the breakfast specially prepared the last 2 mornings. On the previous day I had asked her for soya milk and she defensively asked if they didn't have any what else would I have. I told her they did. A waitress appeared with our breakfasts and she pointed in our direction. They duly arrived with eggs in situ. I explained we had ordered vegan and she just kept repeating yes. I eventually stated that eggs were not vegan and she exclaimed "oh my goodness" and marched off. It is totally inexcusable in this day and age that staff are so poorly trained that they do not know what vegan is. Of note, the Fipino waiter, who's name I did not catch was so pleasant and delightful, a real asset to the hotel as are Jade and Gloria. The vegan debacle left us exhausted and upset and made for a very unrelaxing break. This is lovely hotel with some amazing staff but the vegan options or lack of really let the hotel down. The Ormonde have a vegan menu and The Hibernia have vegan options too. This hotel really needs to step up to the mark.

Hi Susan, Many thanks for your in-depth review. I'm glad you enjoyed some aspects of you stay. As per our e conversations it is disappointing to see your comments. I did advise of the plant based dietary options on our soon to be launched new a la carte dinner menu and I'm confident we will achieve our goal with this menu. I have advised the staff you name checked of your kind comments. I do hope you will return again where I can assure you both of a warm welcome and interesting plant based cuisine or indeed you might like to try one of our sister hotels, the Tower Hotel, Waterford, Royal Marine, Dublin or Druids Glen, Wicklow. This was our first trip to Ireland. We were most impressed with the hotel which was situated as the name suggest, next to a river in the centre of the city, which is lovely in itself. The hotel was very comfortable, our room was spacious, nicely appointed, clean and warm with a huge bed. We ate at the hotel and the food was very goos and not too expensive nor were the drinks prices to be fair. All the staff, were welcoming, warm and friendly and couldn’t be more accommodating. We also found this to be true of the people generally and the local Garda we chatted to out and about. And the hilarious driver of the landtrain, Neville was very entertaining with their trademark sense of humour. The stand out feature for me however was the hotel breakfasts which were just superb every morning. We have no hesitation in recommending the ROI as a destination, the hotel or the city and we are sure to return. Thank you all for a fabulous short break 👍

Great location. Fabulous breakfast . It is bit chaotic when busy as you have to go in and give your room number and wait to be called. We didn't realise thus until someone in queue told us. Minor issue but might the better to have a staff member come out to the line. Beds very comfortable. And we had a lovely view of the castle. Very clean

This hotel is in a beautiful location but unfortunately that's about all I would recommend about it. Had a meal with a large group, the service was so slow it was beyond belief. A skeleton but nice staff served but when the food arrived it was lukewarm and barely edible. A small glass of wine cost 9 euro , a total rip off. Will not be going back

Hi Anne, Many thanks for taking the time to write a review of your recent experience. Needless to say I am disappointed in the sentiments you expressed. Our food and beverage service has been quite good and we have put a lot of time and effort into training and the feedback has generally being very positive. Whilst your comments on food and service are subjective I must point out that our wines served by the glass are all 170ml and are clearly listed in the beverage menu. There are various wines served by the glass at different price points €7, €7.50, €8 and €10 per 170ml glass. I therefore cannot understand how you paid €9 for a 'small glass of wine'. We are in the business of providing hospitality and are proud of what we do. When we get constructive criticism we react to it and make improvements where possible. I would be delighted to discuss the above with you and in this regard can be contacted at asmith@rivercourthotel.com or by phone at 056 772388. Kind Regards, Anthony Smith
