The hotel is located in the perfect spot to easily access all Kilkenny has to offer. Apart from that it is a dated hotel with long winding halls and staircases. The room was overpriced at €160 a night for what you got and the breakfast the next morning isn't worth it as you can get better in the local cafes close by.

If you are a traveler who gets tired to staying in bland modern hotels whose rooms all have similar decor and bland in service then I strongly recommend this hotel. Its goes back to 1797, and thankfully has respected an authentic appearance. All the staff from reception, dinning room and bar and night porter are all welcoming and friendly and clearly have pride in this venerable building. It is placed in a central location with free car-parking, so excellent for those touring, and makes a great place to visit the ancient and historic town of Kilkenny.

I stayed two nights with a colleague, and were able to avail of the offer which included a main course dinner on one of the evenings. It was very good value. My only regret is the ubitiouses and intrusive piped music in the dinning room, Any Williams singing Moon rive at Breakfast I can do without. Overall, lovely staff and very enjoyable stay in an authentically traditional Irish Hotel and excellent value.

Club house tends to make you think of Country Club & Hotel well makes you think of Hotel; leave these ideas behind. Think more of a stage coach guest house & you’d be more on track for this establishment. I’m more the type who enjoys modern bright luxury hotels with floor to ceiling windows, but this place is quite the opposite. I hated it at first & wanted to leave but the longer I stayed the more it grew on me. Big plus for this place, the staff couldn’t be nicer & it’s right in the middle of everything. The decor comes out of the 70s which some say adds character, others say desperately needs updating. I didn’t like the window in the room because you had to be over 6ft to see out, with the bottom half being frosted like a bathroom window, but standing on a chair the view was nothing to write home about. The floorboards creek, as does the bed which I didn’t find at all comfortable, it’s a very hard mattress but some like that. If you’re coming in late in the evening you’ve to ring the doorbell & the creepy floorboards remind you of sneaking into your parents house when you were young. The establishment is a myriad of twisting corridors & bits of steps (some places 5, some 3, some 13), which you’ll either love or hate. If I owned the property I would be advertising it as an Olde World stage coach guest house & throw in a ghost or 2 for good measure; the place is 200 years old & you definitely feel it’s history so it could attract guests who seek out that type of thing. Unfortunately when we stayed there we had some very noisy neighbours; talking at the top of their voices, knocking on doors & doors opening/closing loudly till 6:30am the first night & 3 the second. The shower was okay, did the job but not much pressure but again the place is very old so I’d imagine the plumbing is antique. The breakfast was basic but enjoyable. There were lots of pictures all over the premises which you’ll either love or hate. No A/C which might be a problem in Summer. A heater on the wall for winter. Carpet on the dining room floor which wouldn’t be suitable if you have a messy toddler/baby. Some things people might find issue with are cracks in the sink/mould on the grout in the bathroom/you can only take 1 sheet of toilet paper at a time like in public toilets/ the same ‘milk’ was left in our tea station for 2 days so most likely UHT/ TV was a tiny portable one/ the window only opened an inch, but each to their own. The property did have Internet. The carpets/drapes were quite musty due to their age which caused some issues for my Asthma. throughout I’ve taken photos which I attach to give you a much better picture.

Stayed in this hotel recently with my daughter for two nights. What an absolute pleasure from beginning to end. The location is excellent, and if you are getting the bus to Dublin or Waterford there is a stop around the corner. We had a breakfast and dinner deal on the first night, and cannot emphasize enough how delicious both meals were. So much that we dined there the next day and had lunch on the day we were leaving. The food is all freshly cooked, and the choice is just amazing for the value. The breakfast ranges from porridge to fruit to full Irish with plenty of variations including vegetarian option. The meals are all table service and very prompt. The produce was beautiful with particular reference to the bacon which was very tasty and not watery like it sometimes can be. The eggs were done to perfection too. And the coffee was freshly brewed. The evening meals offer a wide range with offers including 2 and 3 course meals if you don't fancy A le Carte. We had the buffalo wings and scampi as a first course on night one followed by the lemon sole on a bed of mash with stir-fried veg and steak with chunky chips and veg. Both dishes were exemplary. Second night we both had steaks and again the meal was beautiful. The staff are so helpful and very friendly and nothing is too much trouble. A lot of locals seem to dine in the hotel which is always a good sign. The hotel itself is so quaint and full of quirky artefacts and really old style furnishings which compliment the ambience beautifully. There are a good few stairs to be negotiated to the rooms , so if coming with somebody infirm it might be a good idea to let them know. We were not bothered as we enjoyed looking at all the charm oozing in the corridors and stairwells. The rooms are basic but clean and the bed linen is crisp and white. The bathroom towels and Egyptian cotton and a great size too. There is the option of a bath or a shower and the TV has a good few channels and radio stations. The curtains adequately block out the light if needed and the hotel is quiet at night. Everything is on the doorstep including Kilkenny Castle just around the corner and all the shops and pubs etc. All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anybody looking for a really economical but truly enjoyable culinary experience and refreshing stay. We will be back for sure!

We stayed as part of a group for a big birthday over two nights and at first glance I was pleased with the room. As they state in their website, there are a lot of stairs, so be warned. The room was large and had a double bed and a single bed with the bonus of a bathroom with a bath. However, the double bed was actually two zipped together, which I don’t have a problem with.. but the two beds had mattresses which were of different height, different softness snd must have been as old as the hotel. My partner lay on one side and practically disappeared into the mattress while the other remained high but sloped downwards! Not great. I slept in the single bed the whole stay. The furniture was old fashioned and you couldn’t sit at the mirror in the wardrobe or see yourself in it if you stood up! The tea and coffee were provided on a shelf which was a about five foot high. Not the safest way to make hot drinks. Shower was adequate. Our room was above the porch and bar snd very noisy right up to five am when people were ringing the night bell to get in or others were leaving.

The bar and restaurant were great! Great staff. Excellent breakfast and a beautiful room to dine in. The hotel is beautiful to look at with loads of character but the room we had didn’t live up to it. Others in our party had better rooms it seems so I can’t speak for all but the overall impression is that a lot of money needs spending to bring the rooms up to date and make them worthy of this fantastic building. Just as an aside I asked the hotel to get some balloons and wine for the birthday boy’s room and they sorted this out for me and threw in a complimentary dessert as well and he was pleased about this as it was a nice touch. I paid for this at check in. After I returned home I got a message telling me I had an outstanding balance and could I call to rectify it. When I called I was told the outstanding amount was for the extras that were already paid for at check in!! Just make sure you keep your receipts. I only mention this as another review also said they had been charged for extras twice. Overall a great building, great staff but lousy beds!

My husband and I went here midweek for a mini break, Just one night. If you are looking for a luxurious hotel stay with a plush room and all that jazz then The Clubhouse is not the place for you. However if you want a hotel situated right in the middle of Kilkenny to explore the city or do some shopping or have a night out then this is the hotel for you .
Very very basic rooms ( a lick of paint on all the pine would not go astray) I have not seen hotel rooms as basic ever , that said the bed was big and comfy
The hotel itself is full of charm with very nice staff. The food is lovely , we had dinner and breakfast very nice steak
Breakfast was a triumph ! It has table servic! a lovely waitress served us a beautifully cooked fresh breakfast with plenty of toast and freshly brewed coffee! What a treat! no queueing at toaster or eating undercooked soggy rashers (as has been My experience at breakfast buffets )
I really enjoyed the stay, good food, lovely bar, cosy rooms , Kilkenny on your doorstep and tbh it was excellent value for money. That said don't think this hotel would suit young children or elderly people for an overnight stay lots of steps and stairs , but if you're looking for a nice relaxing night away this is the place ( maybe bring a laptop if you want to watch a movie etc in bed and prepareyourselves for hotel rooms that have not changed since the 1980's )

We were booked in for a Saturday night as we were attending a concert in the Cathedral.
After reading some of the reviews we didn’t really know what to expect.
We arrived and parked the car at the rear of the Hotel and entered through the back door.
The Hotel is quite an old Hotel but from what we could see it was spotless.
We checked in and went to our room.
Although it was a small room, it had all you would need for a nights stay. It was bright and clean with tea making facilities.
We had booked in for dinner that evening and chose to order from the set 2 course menu.
My partner had chicken wings and steak, while I chose the goats cheese starter and the beef burger. The food was delicious and the staff were very pleasant to deal with.
The next morning we had breakfast, which was included in our booking. Again the food was tasty and lots of choices to choose from
For a central location and reasonably priced Hotel we were really happy with our stay.

This is a fantastic hotel for visiting Kilkenny with the medieval mile just round the corner and the castle a five minute walk.
The room was just right for the three of us and the breakfasts had an excellent selection with the best fried eggs that I have had in ages.
We ate in the hotel on the first night and if I hadn't already booked a local tapas bar for the next night I would have dined in the restaurant for all three evenings.
If there is a special on I would seriously recommend it. They have a very good chef.
The staff in the bar/dining area were especially helpful and really stuck to the Covid regulations.
We all loved the visit and if we are ever in Kilkenny again this is where we will stay.

The Club House has lovingly been cared for by five families throughout its history and much of its charm has been preserved. This means, as other reviews have mentioned, stairs. The building had multiple additions, so there are many many stairs. We are fit and in our 30’s. Getting our two suite cases up and into our room (which was only in the teens) was quite the journey,
The room was small for two people. The toilet was, understandably, connected to old plumbing and was finicky. We didn’t try the shower, as it wasn’t clean. The bed was hard as a rock. There was no AC, which makes sense, and the room was stuffy. Opening the window did help this a bit.
For the price and location within walking distance to most of Kilkenny it was worth staying in an interesting place for a night. I would likely call one night enough, though, and find other lodging for a return trip, as the hotel room earned 2 stars for me.
Having the restaurant on the first floor, though, was really nice. We came in later in the evening and were able to buy a hot meal. The chef’s roast of the day was excellent.
Breakfast is included at the restaurant downstairs as well, which was a plus, and they did have options available for those with allergies.
The dining options earned a third star for this review.
There is also a free car park behind the hotel, which was easy enough for our medium sized Toyota rental car. There were plenty of spots available while we were there and they let us stay in the lot for a while on our last day when we were touring the castle and had already checked out. 3.5 stars, if I could.

Having struggled to find the entrance to the hotel car park, it's from the street behind, we were disappointed to be shown a bedroom that was up and down several flights of stairs.
The room was basic and old-fashioned at best, with a small bathroom behind a flimsy sliding door - however, the beds were comfy (or maybe we were just tired) and we slept well.
The Breakfast menu included The Full Irish, of course,; the service was rather abrupt and not that welcoming.
