Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Great Southern Killarney hotel is celebrated for its prime location near town amenities and attractions, although noise may be a concern for some guests. Its cleanliness is consistently lauded, with travelers finding the rooms and common areas to be spotless. While service generally earns high marks for friendliness and professionalism, there are occasional reports of sluggishness.
The comfortable rooms with pleasing views and furnishings offset some opinions about dated decor. The hotel's amenities and elegant atmosphere receive praise, but opinions on value and dining are mixed.

Detailed Reviews
Stayed here with a few friends we were celebrating our birthdays. Arrived early so our bags were taken from us & we were rang when our rooms were ready, our bags had been put to the rooms for us. The rooms & bathrooms were immaculate clean & very spacious. Guidelines for Covid were definitely followed in the hotel, hand sanitizer in each room & the tv remotes were in a pouch.. we were well impressed with this. We had our mouthwatering dinner in the restaurant which was served by top class waiters & waitresses. Had a few drinks in the table which was table service which again we were served by great barmen. Breakfast was also fantastic & a buffet service for cereals, bread, juices etc was provided by friendly & obliging waitresses. Overall we had a fantastic stay here. Ideal location within walking distance to Killarney town centre just 5 mins away. We are already looking forward to our next stay here..

My husband and I my 3 sons & daughter in law went to stay in the great southern hotel Killarney for 4 nights on the 24th of July 2020 . This hotel is amazing just stunning the whole experience was fantastic. As you enter the hotel it is so grand the attention to detail is perfect it is like walking back in time to the Edwardian era .
The staff were so helpful nothing was any bother to them we had 3 garden rooms they were so clean spotless and had a beautiful balcony overlooking the gardens and water feature outside in the garden was so calming . The bathroom was so spacious with a beautiful rooltop bath and white fluffy towels toiletries were beautiful and it was spotless we ate in the restaurant the garden room fine dining at its finest. The waiter was very well trained to the highest standard and done his job to perfection food was fantastic I booked a massage in the spa and celia the therapist was fantastic I felt fantastic. We booked the Grace suite for our stay, the room is massive, with a bathroom bigger than some hotel rooms, it wasn't the cleanest when we got there, but it was rectified, after I informed them. Very comfortable peaceful and classy. Any fears we had during the C19 issues vanished upon arrival, hand sanitiser stations were everywhere, including the room. Face masks were available at reception. Breakfast was so well organised and more importantly, thought through. Lots of space between tables, all the staff wore full face shields or masks as well as gloves. Dinner in the Garden room, was superb, the food was excellent as was the choice of wines. We had some small issues with the room, but overall the hotel comes highly recommended, for couples or families. Great to see so many Irish people in the hotel too. May I say a BIG thank you to Sasha a manager in the hotel, for being so friendly and professional. We will be back.

Hotel is lovely and decor is very nice but it’s not without its flaws and is far from perfect. Food was excellent both nights we ate in the main restaurant. Breakfast layout and execution was fantastic also and they are doing a great job adhering to Covid 19 hygiene rules. We were given a lemon of a room the first night, over looked the garbage compactor, sewage smell from the toilet and the music from the lobby toilet which was just below our room could be clearly heard through in to our room. It was like having a radio on all night. Rang reception at 2am as I couldn’t sleep with it and they turned it off immediately however it came on again at 6:30am. Changed room later that day without issue and the next room was perfect up on the third floor, quiet and overlooking the garden. We stayed as a large family and had a lovely time. Would have given 5 stars except for the room on the first night.

Stayed here for 2 nights while in Killarney and only wished it could have been for longer. The hotel is beautifully decorated with the period of the hotel in mind.
We stayed in a stunning suite with a xlarge bed, two wingback chairs, table and large tv. We also had an adjoining tvroom with comfy chairs, table and there was also a fridge in this room.. The ensuite had a double vanity, large shower and a beautiful roll top bath in the centre of the room.
There was plenty of storage in the room and also a walk in wardrobe .
The room was tastfully decorated with period furniture and antiques.
With restrictions in place for Covid-19 we couldnt drink in the bar, however we did have drinks in the reception/foyer with its many soft comfy sofas.
We didnt get to eat dinner here, however breakfast was delicious with a great selection of everything you could possibly want. It was very well organised, you prebooked a time and there was never a queue. Breakfast in now served in the function room so tables were all well spaced apart.
The Staff were extremly helpful allowing us to book-in early (around 11am) so we could park our car in the carpark free of charge. They called when our room was ready which was an hour before the usual 4pm checkin that hotels are now insisting on.
The Spa was fully booked both of the days we stayed so I would advise to book before you travel.
I have stayed in many hotels in Killarney but without doubt will stay here again next time I visit.

Used to be called The Malton Hotel. My partner Robin and I had a superb weekend here. Room was spotless, comfortable and breakfasts, although different from what West Coast Americans are used to, was delicious. Thank you!

I visited this really lovely Hotel this week with my family and to say we were all very happy with our way to short break is an understatement. This Hotel
offers way more than you could even ever expect from the time you drive up to it’s very old style beautiful grand building with stunning grounds you can feel the history here the gardens are so well maintained and stunning. You are greeted by the extremely charming and knowledgeable concierge gentleman Sean who cannot do enough for you while we stayed here he has so much knowledge of the area and delivers all of this in pure Irish charm. Upon checking in to the Hotel it is so beautiful with fresh flowers everywhere and an open fire burning. The receptionist we had the absolute pleasure of looking after us was Shauna she is an absolute gem and made our stay so special with her professionalism and lovely manner each morning it was just so lovely to see. Our room we booked for the 3 nights was the garden deluxe room with a lovely balcony it over looked the gardens I’d highly recommend to book this room so spacious and spotlessly cleaned each day the biggest and most comfortable bed I’ve slept in. Bathrobes and slippers provided lovely linens with a claw freestanding bath and rain shower . My older boys had a twin classic room which was lovely and they were very happy. The food and drinks are beyond any 5 star Hotel I’ve stayed in the service 5 star breakfast and dinner WOW and the terrace and cocktail bar with delicious pizzzas and mezz boards fabulous the and staff are really what makes this Hotel so very special you feel so at home they cannot do enough for you!!!!
we had the very elegant and charming lady Martina take care such good care of us and it’s really how hospitality is done at its best old school Leona in the lobby was so friendly and attentive to us during our stay as were all of the staff . All in all we cannot wait to return again it’s just such a pity we didn’t have longer thank you to all at this truly classy gem of a Hotel.

It feels so luxurious, the finishes in the rooms and ensuites were amazing!
I felt very comfortable here, and had an amazing nights sleep.
The staff are so friendly and helpful, the COVID precautions in place are superb!
We were provided with personal hand sanitizer and sanitising wipes in the room.
I cannot wait to return to this hotel sometime in the future.

I have always been a big fan of this hotel, having visited the Spa and had Afternoon tea here on a number of times I was never disappointed and found the staff excellent. So when recently my partner was celebrating a milestone birthday, I booked a night away at The Great Southern. While it was quite expensive, I was certain that it was the ideal place to mark the special occasion and that the experience would be well worth it. I booked one of the "Classic" rooms which look very beautiful on their website. When we arrived we were disappointed with the room, it was very basic and quite dated looking,it did not contain some facilities you would expect from a 4 star hotel.I do understand that it is an old hotel and perhaps some of the rooms are awaiting refurbishment, but I do not believe that the standard of the room in anyway equates to the rate being charged, especially when it is nothing like the rooms advertised on the website.
At breakfast the next morning, we queued for about 15/20 minutes for a table. When we were seated we we told that someone would come by to take our order, we waited 15 minutes and in the end we had to go up on two occasions to ask if coffee could be brought to our table. Again I understand that it was extremely busy and the staff were clearly rushed off their feet, but there didn't appear to be anywhere near enough staff on to cater for the crowd.
We both left the hotel that morning feeling disappointed and pretty underwhelmed by the whole experience. I feel particularly annoyed as I had booked the stay believing that it would have been a standout experience to mark the special occasion.
I had just planned on giving this feedback when leaving, but we were not asked how our stay was when checking out and paying.

Our room had a bath but we required a walk-in shower as well due to mobility issues. The “shower” in our bathroom was literally a 2X2 foot box hardly big enough to turn around in, forget about picking up dropped soap ! The bathroom itself was really large, so they had plenty of space to make the shower a normal size. Very disappointing. This hotel was our least favorite on a 10-day trip.
I would suggest you contact the Hotel to secure this information.
I doubt it but you can ask the Hotel.
We did not encounter this problem. Very doubtful they have a problem with any bugs in this Hotel.
