Reviews summary
This summary was created by AI, based on recent reviews.
Powered by AI
The Western Hotel garners positive feedback for its service, with many guests appreciating the friendly staff, though a few point out professionalism could be better. It's considered a good value, especially for its reasonably priced breakfast, despite some additional costs for snacks. Its location is a winner, offering easy access to Galway's attractions yet providing a peaceful environment.
Cleanliness is a strong suit, with travelers enjoying well-kept rooms. The atmosphere is lively, thanks to the popular live music and a cozy pub, and while amenities generally meet guests' needs, some suggest improvements for in-room coffee and the elevator. Room comfort is satisfactory, but noise and temperature control sometimes detract from the experience, along with dated decor.

We had a very nice stay at the Western Hotel. The hotel has a great location. The receptionist was very helpful in terms of providing information. We signed up for the morning breakfasts after arriving at the hotel and were glad that we did. The food was good and the service was very prompt. We will stay here again in the future!

This hotel's location is great, and the fact that they have on-site parking is wonderful for tourists. And, I'll add, the room we stayed in was mostly clean and comfortable.
That being said, the bathroom we had was a miserable experience. For starters, the detachable showerhead didn't fit in the holder, so it kept falling out every time it was used, either hitting us or hitting the tub and spraying us. Literally the worst shower experience of my life.
On top of that, when we checked in, we confirmed that we were staying for two nights. However, the next day, our keycards didn't work and we were told that the original person at the desk had only confirmed us for one night - leaving our baggage locked in our room. What if someone else had checked in and gotten our room? What if they had come to clean it, thinking it was empty, and our stuff had been taken away? The issue was fixed, of course, but it was still a little aggravating.
Other than that, we didn't stay here during the day for too long. It's a solid place if you need a bed to sleep on and a place to park, but this was an average experience at best.

Spent two days in late January in this clean, well managed hotel a stone's throw from Eyre Square. The price is quite reasonable (€65/85 for Fri/Sat stay). Staff are consistently helpful and welcoming. The room was clean and quiet. Galway is a walkable city (as are all Irish cities) but this hotel is especially well place.
The restaurant, unlike so many other hotel restaurants, offers excellent food at a reasonable price. Breakfast has a set price of €10 but they let us have tea and toast one morning for a fiver with no fuss. The three-course dinner for €25 comprised excellent food and excellent service. Hotel guests get an additional voucher for a glass of wine or pint of beer.
We have family in Galway, will stay here again when the Family "B&B" is full. We've found our place to stay in the city. You really cannot beat this place.

Spent 3 nights at this hotel, only meal was had was dinner in the bar on our last night, which was lovely. Good portions, nicely presented mains and desserts. All staff wore face coverings and there was plenty sanitiser available. Hotel location is very convenient, still near to Eyre Square but a little quieter.

A friend and I stayed a couple of nights at The Western during a recent visit to Galway. It's an older hotel that has some nice character, though the common areas and rooms are a bit worn around the edges. The location is excellent, being only a short walk downhill to the shops, restaurants and pubs of the Latin Quarter. Our room was generously sized and clean enough; the bathroom was particularly large though oddly there was not much shelf space for personal items. The staff was very helpful on making suggestions on local restaurants. The included parking was a nice amenity, though be aware it's very tight underground lot so you will likely need a valet's help to get your car. We had an early departure to drive to Dublin for our flight home and the staff helpfully had our car ready to head out early in the morning. Overall The Western worked well for us so it's worth considering for your stay in central Galway.

Our stay was great, we checked in and the woman at the counter upgraded us to an apartment which had a living room, kitchen and separate bedroom and bathroom. It was very nice with a view of Galway. Staff were nice. Parking is a nightmare - you drive into the back of the hotel and the car park is rammed full of cars all blocking each other in and then you give the keys to the steward and they move your car if someone else wants to drive out! So bizzare. We didn’t want to leave our hire car there and have someone else drive it, but luckily we got upgraded and the car park is different for apartments. Was a normal car park by TK Max with a specific space which was good. Only other bad thing is they tried to charge us for something from the snack box when we didn’t have anything from there - so be mindful of this! They refunded us in the end though. Overall it was lovely and amazing location to walk < 3 mins walk to centre.

Spent just one night here. Great location just off Eyre Square. Staff very friendly and helpful and welcoming. Double room was small but adequate for one night’s stay and was warm and clean.
Would recommend requesting a quiet room if you stay there as we were on the street side and it was quite noisy from about 6am onwards.

So me and Mrs stayed here on the 22nd till the 24th of July 2021, having visited galway many times over the years I can safely say this was the worst experience in any hotel I have stayed in anywhere in the world. I'll start with the dangerously small underground carpark that they promote as valet parking that really is just two lads sitting in the carpark that will move the cars around if someone who is blocked in wants to get out its an absolute joke. Now for the check in experience omg the girl behind the desk gold us we would have to pay a €50 refundable deposit for the "minibar" so we thought that's a bit strange but at least we have a minibar which could come in handy for putting a bottle of water into, so when we get to the room I couldn't find the minibar then to my horror there is a brown box on the window sill in the sun thats got various items like crisps and peanuts and 2 cans of fizzy drinks with a price list next to it so this is what the "minibar" was? How is that a minibar? No fridge no water in the room in the middle of a heatwave!!! On the first night we stayed the room was so hot and sticky I had to fill up the bath with cold water and get in to cool down, now my problem here is the staff would of known the room would of being very hot but no fan in the room no mention when we checked in that we might need a fan no offer of 1!!! we went the next day to check out the beer garden that turned out just to be a back yard with nothing to look at with some garden furniture skattered about and they promoted cocktails on the board outside the hotel but at the table there was no menus for cocktails I had to ask for it?just like the carpark and valet parking the beer garden was a joke! Now here is the best part of the whole terrible experience when we checked out the receptionist told us we would have to wait for our €50 deposit to be given back till someone check our room? never anywhere in the world have I had to do this but the best was yet to come because then we loaded up the car went back to reception and by that time another guest was checking out and he was asked did he take anything from the so called minibar which he said he didn't and all the girl said was OK have a nice day like seriously no mention that his room would have to be checked but we had to wait 10 minutes? last of all while having breakfast there were lots of people walking around without face masks on and not 1 member of staff asked them to put them on? are not still living with covid? So to sum up stop calling it vaket parking because its not, stop calling it a beer garden because its not, stop calling it a minibar because its not! Never again will I even attempt to pass this hotel on my next visit to galway.

Responded 4 Aug 2021
Dear Kevfitzs, Hope you are keeping well. I am very disappointed to hear that your experience at the Western Hotel, Galway was not as expected. I wish to refer to a few of the points that you made. First of all our 'dangerously small' car park (as you have called it) can easily park 25 cars at the time on parking spots. We are the only City Centre Hotel in Galway, we offer free parking to our Hotel guests on site. Once parking spots are taken, which allow cars to park in the middle and ask guests to leave their car keys at reception. Our dedicated parking attendants (who you have called ‘2 lads’) are experienced and insured drivers. They are always more than happy to assist our guests to park and move their cars in a safe manner, to maximise a parking space. Secondly, we have implemented a snack boxes in our Hotel bedrooms, to surprise our guests a little once they check in to the room. It is the guests’ choice to purchase any good from the box or not to. Security deposit is to cover a cost of the snack box and it is fully refundable if none of the items from the box are taken. Guests that paid €50.00 security deposit in cash are asked to wait until the box is checked by the accommodation manager. When deposit is paid on card guests do not need to wait as we can deduct the snack charge when refunding the card. Our Front Desk Receptionist must have mistakenly called the snack box ‘minibar’ on your arrival which is a genuine lapse on her side. We all know that the weather in mid July 2021 in Ireland was exceptional. As a 3 star Hotel we do not have air conditioning and it is not what we advertise to attract more guests. We do have limited number of fans to provide to our guests upon requests. Once the heatwave hit Ireland 2 weeks ago, all fans we had were given to rooms requesting it. We wanted to purchase more to have it in all our bedrooms, however they were out of stock wherever we have checked. Thirdly, regarding our beer garden, this is the only negative I have heard since our beer garden was opened, and I am happy to see our outdoor area is getting more and more popular. And yes, we advertise cocktails and we do not have cocktail menus on tables as we are following Government Guidelines. Menus are given once guests are sited at the table and are disinfected after each use. Face masks are still mandatory and I can assure you that our team is fully trained on prevention of Covid19 spread. Kevinfitzs, I truly hope the above explanation helped you to understand Hotel operations during the pandemic. Our guests’ satisfaction and safety always was and will be our number one priority. I can only feel sorry that you have missed it during your stay with us. Best Regards, Marta Normantowicz General Manager

Decent hotel if unremarkable. Room was a little cramped and corridors difficult to negotiate with baggage as there are many twists / turns / fire doors & steps. Found the room was difficult to get any fresh air into with just one small window to open. The weather was warm but wet and muggy, but if it had been hot, I would imagine it would have been an uncomfortable room to sleep in. There were other rooms with patio doors so would obviously have been a better option and may be worth requesting when booking. Bed very comfortable with good quality linen and pillows. Bathroom lacked decent water pressure but we were on the top floor and may have been better on lower floors. Hotel clearly spend good money on decor as it is freshly decorated throughout to a high standard even if the room furniture is a little dated. Public rooms are very nice. Very clean throughout. Staff very friendly. Breakfast superb quality. Parking is underground and accessed from a narrow road at the rear of the hotel. There are very limited parking spaces. Location of the hotel is a walk downhill to the main tourist area known as the "latin quarter". I have some walking difficulty which meant it took a steady 15 min stroll to this area but found the uphill walk back too much and required a taxi which are numerous but expensive. This maybe worth noting if you have similar issues.

Hello, Many thanks for your feedback left with us. I am sorry to hear you found the corridors diffictult to navigate.. we are a very old georgian building and unfortunately have to work with what we have. I am happy to hear you found the bed comfortable and our linen good quality! Unfortunately yes our windows sometimes can not open fully due to health and safety regulations, however we do offer cooling fans upon request. We are one of the very few hotels to offer free underground parking which is a great added bonus for us. Have a great day! Patrick M Management.

The Western Hotel was a great spot. We were able to check in early and the free valet parking (the parking lot was full) was also a huge bonus. When ready to leave in the morning, the car was parked in the garage ready for us.
The room was clean and the location to the town centre was perfect for walking.
We would stay here again!
